Which Players Stay and Which Transfer?

Package deal is what I was told. Again, don’t shoot the messenger, just what I was told.

The dumbest thing Harding can do is to be part of a package deal. I'm guessing that wherever Freeman ends up it won't be easy for Harding to get playing time. He can barely get it at Iowa. Freeman is going to take a step up and Harding needs to take a step down.

The best option is a black coach and 90% black players. We’ve seen from the last 25 years that a bunch of white boys from Iowa can’t win shit anymore. Might have a decent regular season but will get booted as soon as you get to tourney.
Unless your name is Gonzaga that’s probably true.

Have bad news for you Lute. A friend’s son played with one of the 3 you mentioned and is still boys with him. He said Freeman has standing offers for 7 figures per year from other schools and that all 3 are gone. Don’t know exactly how true that is, just what I was told.
I am ok with that news….thanks for the Intel. 👍

There is no position on the roster that couldn’t be upgraded. Anyone who wants out, be my guest. Even some who stay probably need to be shown the door.
Yup, if difficult fireside chats needs to happen this summer - so be it. I forgot, can schollies be yanked? (Crean’d). Tia

I’ll say this: If Fran imparts as much integrity in his players as Frank Garza and other say he does, they will at least wait until Iowa names a new coach before they make a final decision on their future.

I understand that college basketball is a business, and players need to look out for their futures. And if anyone ends up wanting to leave, I don’t begrudge them.

But they should at least find out who the new guy is, and give him a chance to make his pitch. They owe that to their team and their school.

They are all so so great....
Quit being a dickhead. If you don’t think we couldn’t use Dix and Freeman and honest even Pryce (not a starter) next year you’re being ridiculous. Now the new coach might have a completely different style of play and rules and they might part ways but they are clearly good enough to play for us.

If Iowa hires DeVries, there will be more money. There is no doubt Beth has a plan to get this done.
To keep the players. If Perk got 500k to go to Mizzou the number for a Center like Freeman is going to be 800-1 million for Freeman and possibly the same for Dix. There’s a lot of work to be done.

Some of you need more dixxxxx.

Best thing to happen is pretty much everyone leaves, because then the new coach doesn't have to waste a bunch of time rewiring the mindsets of "offense only, and just need to make an appearance on the defensive end to make coach happy".

I'm sure all the Iowa players will look at whatever NIL package and opportunity is offerred by the new Iowa coach--that is just good business sense, no integrity needed. I do think they are quality young men.

The Portal allows them to go anywhere including back to Iowa. They might as well all declare for Portal if they want, or wait for the new hire, I don'tthink it matters much. Practice doesn't start until Next Fall. The coaches we want to hire actually have some work to do with this thing called the NCAA tourney before signing with Iowa.

IF Freeman was getting offers for $1 million plus during the season and shutdown to insure he was going to be healthy for next season and highest paycheck/best opportnunity, then that just shows there are Zero rules on Tampering. We kind of knew that from CJ basically signing with Kentucky while the season was still going on, but the Freeman case was a new Low with the kid maybe quitting on his team.
We just don't know.

Actually with NIL, I don't think the ethnicity of the coach matters any more. Before it could be a black coach might have some connections in H.S. basketball recruiting and black culture that might make a difference and now it is just the biggest paycheck and the playing opportunity and getting a chance to be on a winning team

Agree, most of the team are good individual players but it's a poorly constructed roster of mostly role players with the same weaknesses. And the few guys that could play D and rebound didn’t get much time.

Would love to have Freeman, Dix, Pryce, Traore, Tadjo and especially Koch back.

I'm assuming most will leave though.

Hopefully, Dix, Freeman and Harding stay at Iowa City.
Freeman and Harding are a package deal as they were
team mates in high school. Wherever Freeman goes, then
Harding will follow.
They played only one year together in HS. Not sure how tight the bond is there. Don't care if either stay, didn't win anything with them in 2 years.

What's with all the "hope Freeman stays" posts? The dude bitched out and quit on the team. Hope the next team that pays 7 figures gets an insurance policy if the season starts sliding

As a Creighton fan as well... I hope Dix goes there. He would be a great fit in Mac's system. I'll be rooting for him

BH is a D2 player. Watching him against actual BIG point guards (like last night) just showed how far behind he is.

Good luck to Dembele, Mulvey, Kingsbury... But come on

I don't see anyone I would want to keep around besides maybe lil Sandy for a 3 point specialist and Traore/Tadjo with the right coaching. Koch bros are unknowns but nothing really jumped out with the limited playing time

TLDR - will it really matter if anyone stays? (Assuming the rumors of Dix are true)

Current Players (stays in order of likelihood ...
  1. Koch - he's a legacy, no big-time NIL offers to compete with, he's going to be good
  2. Pryce - especially if it's DD given his Waukee and DeVries family ties
  3. I suspect the next coach wouldn't keep Dembele, Trarore, Tadjo
Incoming recruits (in order of likelihood...
  1. Isiah J-A - I don't see him moving again, the NIL must have been acceptable to him, from MN & that's not a good option
  2. Diakite - he didn't seem to have many high major offers, NIL must be adequate
  3. Lewis - the one we all want and suspect he' gone. However, the NIL and exposure to the B1G may keep him.
Going to miss Dix a lot. I've come to the conclusion that Freeman is overrated as our offensive flow and interior defense improved when he went out. Harding started to give us some valuable productivity at the end of the season but certainly replaceable.

WVU has 2-3 frosh & soph players that appears to have made significant contributions, at least statistically, that may follow DD to IA (if it's him) + Tucker of course.

Depends on the hire, if either DaVries or McCollum then I think you keep a good portion as I assume that if Davries is the choice Matt Gatens will join his staff as he was when at Drake. The bigger question is of the incoming players how many will stay but that will be up to the new coach if he wants them or bring others with him because wherever the new coach comes from those players can also follow him to Iowa. If they were all smart they would all enter the portal to see what's out there for them financially and yet still stay at Iowa if they want.
Standard procedure now days. Coach fired or leaves, all players portal with opportunity to return. If the new hire wants them that is.

You’re likely right. Iowa BB currently has NIL that amounts to about $1.5 M. Franny thought you need $5-6 M to field a top 25ish team every year. Bobby Hansen thinks that number is closer to $10 M actually and he’s probably right. Until Iowa can get into that neighborhood it’s not going to matter who the coach is.

It really wouldn't be difficult.

Iowas problem was lack of fundamentals and concepts more than anything.

It makes sense that Freeman would get $1 million plus because he put up pretty good offensive numbers. Rebounding/defense went down a lot . Wouldn't be surprising if a Duke or Kansas would want him. If that finger injury was playable--like with a splint and he quit, then I think that is a demerit point for quitting on your team.

Harding might want to follow Freeman....teams of caliber to pay Freeman won't want Harding.

Dix is Iowa kid but if his Mom is I'll and he needs to move closer to home, I just wish him well.

Iowa should sign Pryce and he won't be a high NIL dollar guy.

The African born guys Traore, Tadjo, Dimbele depending on their visa situation might be "free" because they can't earn money into USA without right visa type.

Exciting times.
whoever pays Freeman $1 million per year is crazy. Doesn't rebound at a high level, commits silly fouls & has no shot outside the paint. Not bulky / strong enough to dominate in the paint either. He has many flaws in his game. Maybe a new coach can develop him further. IDK

Louisville was at$1.2M for Freeman over a month ago.

You absolutely want Cooper Koch back. The other one is a walkon.

Mulvey? What about Mulvey? lmao. He'll probably end up on Rutgers bench...

I'd add the caveat "If the new coach wants them to stay". The recruiting starts the minute the new coach signs on the dotted line. And don't forget if the hire is DD, his son will be the first recruit.

Funny that some of you would prefer to bring Koch back vs an actual productive player in Pryce. While I think he leaves Koch is exactly the type of player that got Fran fired.

Agree.... but they need to portal as no guarantee they will be retained by new coach.
Hard to prove tampering these days as the players utilize agents, who talk/negotiate with the schools

I disagree, Koch has a higher upside. He was a 4* recruit and had offers from Illinois and Purdue. He's a good bit more athletic than PS.

I like Pryce too and also hope he stays.

Those 2 are probably the most likely to come back.

Yes, I think hiring a new coach increases the chances of player retention. The only ones with Man-love for Fran are some of the posters on this board that are going through a greiving stage.

The player's are PRO's/mercenaries and they will go into the best situation for NIL and playing time and to be on winning team. Loyalty to Iowa and Fran are likely low on the totem pole for all them, except for Pryce and Dix. The NIL situation can only improve with Fran gone and I would say the chances of Winning also improve with new guy vs staying the course on stale and declining situation.
I think you seriously underestimate how much the players love Fran. Dix and Sandfort both came back out of loyalty to Fran. But a moot point now.
