The White Sox agreed Friday to a three-year, $8 million extension with Nate Jones, a right-handed reliever who made a promising return from Tommy John surgery in the final two months of the 2015 season.

Under the terms of the deal, Jones will make $900,000 in 2016, $1.9 million in 2017 and $3.95 million in 2018. The contract includes two club options, for $4.65 million and $5.15 million in 2019 and 2020 and a mutual option for $6 million in 2021. Jones would receive a $1.25 million buyout if either club option is declined.

Jones, 29, has pitched just 19 major-league innings since the beginning of the 2014 season. In the running to be the Sox closer in 2014, he suffered a back injury that knocked him out in April of that year and then an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery in July.

He returned on schedule in August 2015 and posted a 3.32 ERA with 27 strikeouts, six walks and five home runs allowed in 19 appearances.

“We view Nate as a key component in the back end of our bullpen,” Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. “Nate is a homegrown pitcher with a power arm and tremendous work ethic, so we are excited to be able to reward him for what he has accomplished thus far in his career and potentially keep him in a White Sox uniform for the next six seasons.”

Jones, a 2007 fifth-round draft pick by the Sox, is 14-7 with a 3.52 ERA and 181 strikeouts over 156 appearances in four major-league seasons.

The terms of Jones’ contract change slightly if he needs another Tommy John surgery, as the deal instead would include three club options, without the mutual option, worth $8.5 million total, including about $500,000 or the league minimum on the first option.

Happy that Cedar Rapids native Scott Schebler will get a chance to play everyday in Cincinnati. he was a victim of a very crowded OF in LA

Jones can hit 100. I have no problem with that signing. I see Matt Thornton is out there....would take him back if they can get him for the right price.
