When it comes to basketball championships neither Iowa or Nebraska has won a BIG championship (in the modern era). Who will be the first to win one...Nebraska or Iowa?

Nebraska because they have a new coach.

You know what Iowa has and if it hasn’t happened in 9 years, it isn’t.

Iowa. Fred never won it in the Big 12, with less teams in the conference, better basketball tradition at Iowa St then Nebraska, no grueling 20 game conference schedule, etc so I’m not sure why Husker fans would assume he is going to win one here.

The reality is neither is probably going to win one while Fran or Fred are coachesat their respective schools.

Better question would be who wins an NCAA tournament game first.

Oh wait...

Nebraska 0-7 (7 appearances)

Iowa 30-28 (26 appearances) 3 Final Fours and 8 Sweet Sixteens

So you don’t count Conference tournament’s..

Why wouldn’t he? In Basketball and Baseball you have regular season champions and tournament champions..

Well then him saying Iowa hasn't won in the modern the the Big Ten Championship in basketball in the "modern era" would be wrong because Iowa has done that 2 times in the last 18 years.

I knew Iowa has won 2 conference tournaments.. The OP Apparently he didn’t.
Tourney championships are just that, you won a tournament. It is not a conference championship.

Fair enough.. So Nebraska won a conference championship (Baseball) first since joining the conference in one of the 3 major Men’s sports..

Got it!

Yes more likely a program with 0 tournament wins in its history is more likely bc their new coach has been to exactly one sweet 16 and hates recruiting....cmon. Prohm has far exceeded Hoibergs results

Some conferences (ACC I think) recognize their tournament champ as the official conference champ, but the Big Ten doesn’t- at least in basketball. Not sure about B12 or other B10 sports. I think for big ten tournament champ is official champ

I am 55. I doubt I see ever win a regular-season championship in my lifetime.

So was it better that Duke was the NCAA Tournament's overall #1 seed based on their regular season and conference championship? So winning the NCAA Tournament isn't as good?
Please don't tell me you think a tournament and the NCAA are the same thing. That is just being dense.

Just because Nebraska has a new coach does not mean they will.

Replacing Fran with a new coach doesn't mean it will.

Other than last year the general direction of Fran's teams have improved. So has his recruiting overall.

I say stick with Fran. His players love him. His players graduate. He's got his flaws, but I don't believe he's satisfied with what he's accomplished. He'll work hard to continue to improve.

I've heard the pie in the sky argument. I heard it when we pressured Dr. Tom in to retirement. It was a mistake then. Fran can still improve this program!

You're right. Winning 6 NCAA Tournament games over 19 days is quite the accomplishment. But I also don't discount what it takes to win a Conference Tournament. Iowa's 4 games in 4 days was remarkable at the time.

2011 UCONN was out of this world! won 5 games in 5 days to claim Big East title (and to make the NCAA Tournament) Then went on and won 6 more games to take home that championship. But they were nowhere close to a regular season champion.

Point is.. Winning any championship is hard!

What do you consider the “modem era”? And why?

Every year I care less and less about the conference titles and more about advancing in the NCAA tourney.
