WHO IS THE IOWA HS GOAT?! The Case for Drake Ayala; Fort Dodge HS/Iowa Hawkeyes

The link above is A write up on Drake Ayala I posted a few weeks ago that chronicles his journey wayyy back to the days of his father, Sam Ayala.

Agreed. Sebolt is not the craziest GOAT argument. 1 loss guy early in his freshman year to an out of state kid, the first over 200 I believe.
Who’d he have to beat for those 200 wins? I like Ayala over Sebolt by a mile, and I definitely don’t think Ayala is the goat.

If Ayala gets held back a year in eighth grade, he’s a 4 timer too.

I've never seen a father so pissed. You would've thought TJ had sunk his boat, wrecked his truck and razed his construction business to the ground. At the same time.
I witnessed some shit in that locker room that would blow your mind.

I doubt many 4-timers have experienced that kind of pressure and anxiety before. If you knew what he faced every time out, you'd shut up quick.

And I'm no big supporter of his and I especially despise his dad.

When evaluating someone's career and where they fit, especially collegiately or in HS where years are limited, I really dislike it when an early loss is used against that person to disqualify them, and especially an early loss against someone quite good. Overall resume is important, but so is rate of growth and the ultimate level the athlete achieves, especially in his junior and senior years.

Jeff Kerber might have escaped his father’s wrath by winning. But his brother, Mark certainly didn’t.

I’m confused, what would I shut up about? The fact he had a terrible father does not change my opinion that TJ (although definitely a great wrestler) is not the goat, and wouldn’t be in my top 5 from the 2000s let alone all time.

You laughing at the prospect of someone nominating him.
Furthermore, you're overvaluing the lack of competition. You can only wrestle who's in front of you, no more, no less. You can control that as much as the generation in which you were born.

The fact that you scoff at the notion tells us everything we need to know.

It’s true you can only wrestle who’s in front of you at an individual tournament, or even a given season. But Sebolt consistently avoided the toughest competition. This was likely not by his decision, but is true nonetheless. Someone like Ayala sought that competition out with national events and even bumping up in season.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but Sebolt is not better than 10 other wrestlers from the last 20 years I can think of. I don’t care how many small town Iowa kids he beat up. That is why it’s laughable to even think he is in consideration.
Was he a great high school wrestler? Definitely. But goat, not even close.

Apparently you didn't understand my first post.

Whichever. It's your bad opinion. Enjoy it.

Seriously, why would anyone not call it for Gable, is this a joke?
Plus, I learned quickly that the answer to all questions is either Gable or 83%.

Unless you define some very precise and objective scoring criteria for GOAT, then there is no answer to it. I hereby rename the thread "Remembrance of some of the best Iowa HS wrestlers".

I’ve written about 30 of these…

and yeah, there’s no right answer, but I’m too far into the series where I can rename it.

Obviously joking about Max. I just don’t see anyone getting close to him in the future. He’s going to walk his way through 4 titles. He wrestles college dudes now for workouts. If he had Gable’s drive I’d hate to see what he’d do to people. He might never see a college match though with football.
