Who Told Nunge He's a 3 Point Shooter?

I really like Nunge's game, and think he's going to be huge for the Hawks once Garza leaves. But he's nearly 7 feet tall yet afraid to stand in the paint.

Nunge wants to be the next Julius Michalik, which is fine, but the result has been abysmal. He shoots nearly 4 threes per game, but makes just 15% of them! That's no typo. 15%, yet someone on the coaching staff must have given him the green light to keep chucking balls up there and hope everyone blocks out for the rebound.

Jack, you've got a nice shot from 15 feet and are a solid rebounder. Save the 3 point shooting for pickup games and maybe next year bring it out again.

Did Fran give any explanation why Nunge played a limited number of minutes last night?

His problem is he doesn't set himself.

And when he does hold the ball, he holds it too long before realizing, "well, nobody else is open and nobody is coming to guard me so perhaps I should shoot the ball.......yeah I think I'm gonna shoot the ball." And then he does........and he misses.

.........basically there's a sweet spot where he catches and gathers into his shot, that his chances of making go up drastically.

Everything I see him catch at the arc and quick turn to shoot like a guard, I know it's gonna be a miss because he's just not natural at it.

His first game I thought wow, he can be really good. I think he made all or all but one of his threes that game. Then he has made 0 or 1 the rest of the season. So he should rein it in and not shoot them.

It was the appropriate number of minutes for him. He, JBo, Pat and Connor should all come off the bench, and none should get more than 10 mins a game except for Connor.
So Fran wasn’t asked or didn’t say why he sat Nunge far longer than in previous games.

No shit, know your part. Rebound hit the little shots.

Fran has said numerous times everyone has the green light if they’re given the shot.

What's Garza's 3-pt percentage? I think I have seen him taking loads of them too.
53 percent. He also had atleast 2 desperation 3s against Gonzaga in that last minute that factor negatively for him. Not much, but it'd be good for a few percentage points.

I just don't want him shooting it early in the shot clock. With time running out take the open shot.

Why? He has been WIDE open when he shoots. I don't get this thinking actually. I would rather him taking a wide open shot compared to a rushed one with the shot clock running out. It counts for 3 regardless of how much time is on the shot clock👌

It's my fault. I told him to. He shoots lights out in practice. Puts Josh Oglesby to shame. Greatest practice shooter I've ever seen.

I agree 100 percent he should not be shooting 3 pointers. But as someone else said if anyone has a reason for having an off game it is Nunge - playing on Christmas the first christmas after losing his father. Had to Be a tough day for him and his family yesterday. Firsts after losing someone is always the worst
I was thinking the same thing. I was surprised he even played. It was clear he wasn’t mentally there.

Can’t make the NBA these days without a three point shot
True but maybe these guys should try being good college players first. The nba is a pipe dream for most of them. Guys like isaiah moss and weezy thinking they are early nba material is sad but also comical

If Nunge played to his capabilities (rim protect, run on the break, clean up the glass) he could be a really solid contributor.

Right now he’s mostly focused on scoring, and scoring in all ways.. which he really cannot do at a high efficiency. He needs to be told to play within himself.. honestly I don’t think they are b/c for him to make it to the NBA he’ll have to be able to stretch the floor with his shot. Fran prioritizes their development for the next-level & he’s not going to take that away.

He's had a tough road. Appreciate the grit that he's showing.

His game is 15 feet of the bucket and in. That's what this team needs from him. Be tough on the boards, be a rim protector, play post D and take the open 12 to 15 footer when it's there.

Hitting from 3 might be needed for him to have a shot at the NBA, but continuing to clank it from there now is not helping this team.

You may get a higher percentage shot if you wait. It’s not a hard concept to understand.

I understand the thinking - the Hawks can get the same "quality of shot" later in the clock. In other words, if he shoots 20% on a three - let's say it is .6 of a point in quality. In the meantime, if Garza shoots 70% from two, it's a 1.4 point shot. Get the ball into Garza for a higher quality shot.

I think the Hawks can get plenty of .6 quality shots later in the shot clock.

I hope that makes some sense to someone besides me.

Nunge's three pointers all seem to be short. It's like he's shooting them strictly with his arm.
[/QUOTE
In the first few games his shots were all long. Now as you point out they seem to be mostly short. It's like he overcompensated and is aiming the ball instead of just shooting in rhythm.

Jack has shot well from outside in the past,.. just not falling right now.
The bad part is they aren't coming anywhere close to falling for most that I've witnessed. Hope he finds the range soon.

I remember last year some of you were thinking Garza should not shoot the three. Chill.

I don't ever want to see Nunge shoot a 3 again. Just because you can make them occasionally does not mean you should make it part of your offense. He has skills and has shown a nice mid range game and moves to the basket. The infatuation that he has with the 3 is hurting his game. Work on it in practice but leave it there!
