Churches are pretty much "non-profit" businesses. I'm of the opinion they should probably be taxed just like any other business. However, I think we should be going after the large corporations that don't pay a cent of tax before we start going after the churches/small businesses.

Question for the OP, do you agree that synagogues and mosques deserve the tax break too or just the churches?

The tax laws are definately slanted towards churches and hospitals. You have folks "donating" these properties to churches/hospitals/non-profits to avoid paying taxes on them...and when this happens, these properties are removed from the tax roles.
I think I once read where 1/2 of the property in Boston Massachusetts is "tax exempt" because of this. (Yet, they all get public services. )

All should get it as long as they stay within the limits of non-profits. Once they stray, it should be based on a case-by-case basis. If the churches get taxed, they will shut down.
