88 years old. Out for the coin toss in minus 4 weather in a short sleeve golf shirt. Awesomecrazynuts.

Bud Grant never let his Viking teams have a heater on
the bench. He refused to do anything that would make
his team more comfortable in frigid Minnesota weather.
The guy ate nails for breakfast. He was tough.

Great, you're tough. Not everyone can be state champion and kids should be encouraged to keep participating.

You are probably the type that would insult them and poke fun if they didn't go out for sports too.
Geez get over it...sports build character...sometimes success comes from failure. Under your system MJ would have been given a spot on the JV team and a trophy...you people are hilarious.

Tough? Maybe. State Champion? Not even close. But for sure I believe in competition. And for sure I know what it took to work my way from 4th team to first. And that didn't happen in every sport. In BB I couldn't get off 3rd team. I played and never got a letter. So I guess I'm tough, huh? Or dumb in some people's minds.

So while you're scolding me you should know I was in sports and band. I was a 3rd chair band guy who ended up 1st chair. I played 4 sports. I sucked at some sports but I was also a small college athlete. I had no speed or jumping ability.

It's one thing to see a few seconds of action in a State Championship. I'm all for that. But just to show up and get a medal for coming to a game? Are you for real?

Hell man, I did lots of activities. I liked some and knew others weren't for me. (I'd like to think most kids get to experience the same thing.) But I sure as hell didn't have some church lady standing over me making sure my feeling were OK.

I got my ass kicked a lot. I got bullied and learned how to navigate around those types of people. I was able to play against D1 athletes who showed me just how bad a was or how far I had to go. But I also didn't quit and I had my moments that have been with me my entire life. I didn't have many moments, but at least I had them.

I just believe you earn it. I look forward to your explanation of what I may be missing. I certainly admit I may be wrong.

(Oh, by the way, I was also a team captain and I NEVER insulted a fellow team member. That's not leadership in my book. So no, I never poked fun at people who played. And I never poked fun at people who didn't. We all have our aptitudes and interests. I try not to prejudge.)

Hey Trevor, ever gotten your assed kick? Just kidding, we know you didn't. Teachers kept you inside at recess so your retainer didn't get broken. Besides, running with corrective shoes is HARD. Believe me, I know. My Mom had me in those and corduroy pants.

It can.. I played basketball till JUCO.. I like to think it did me a lot of good. However, there are some teammates I had or athletes I have met through camps, etc, who never learned character. You can also learn character through band, FFA, community work, etc.

HawkFantastic, you're being the guy we all disliked. Were you really like that? I hope not.

Trevor may very well have been a great athlete. (I was not.) That's not his point. I welcome his thoughts on participation. Just because you & I view it one way does not mean we're right.

The key to happiness and leadership is understanding. It's important to understand the views of others. Don't be "that guy", OK? Be a good guy. It's pretty easy.

I'd add one thing: The athletes with no character are sometimes the greatest educators. You learned how not to behave. I've lead several companies through the years. I prided myself in treating "every" member of our team the same. And I hold grudges to this day against the douche bags I had to tolerate. But I learned from them for sure.

Absolutely the best post I have read around here...

From where I sit the only folks who should be rewarded for the effort are the Special Olympics kids...and if you ever worked one of those things as I have you would completely agree.

Agreed. I'm with you 100% on the Special Olympics kids. But school and activities are designed to prepare people for life. They are intended to create competition and cooperation. Academics are the same way, though I was never competitive in the classroom.

One of the main reasons he did it was that the opposing team wasn't allowed one if he didn't use one. Talk about home field advantage vs. the Dolphins.

Looking back I don't see how they did it. I don't even think it was smart.

Get the f*** outta here. All I did was play organized sports growing up, and I didn't always win a trophy. It didn't depress me. If a kid gets depressed about not winning a 6 inch plastic trophy then you have much bigger problems with that kid, that's probably been brought on by bad parenting.
