Because we live in a democracy, we naturally try to elect pols to look out for us/represent our interests. But it is not a perfect system because we are a nation of a large number of minorities, and manytimes we don't have a politician that totally meets our needs.
It would be great if we all got along, understood what everyone, understood what every group needed, but that is not the case.
But many politicians have learned that the way they keep their jobs, the way they feel important, the way they feed their ego's and the way they make lots of money.......is to impress and even invent ways to make people vote for them. They divide us. Instead of promoting "let's all work together to get along....help each other......we're all Americans", they tell us that they are being taken advantage of, being discriminated against by some other group and you need me to represent you, protect you, fight for you...and I have a political party behind me to help me. So IMO, the democratic system will work quite well if we have politicians/people that work together to identify and work to resolve differences and solve our challenges, Compassion, cooperation, compromise....working within the Constitution, rule of law and the proper legislative process. Not CONTROL of the system, because it just doesn't work that way. Right now we seem to be far from this idea.
