My wife is from Oelwein, Iowa in the North East part of Iowa. They wrote a book about Oelwein called "Methland". The big employer in town closed up and the town has been hurting. Since I have known my wife, the town has shrunk from 10,000 people to about 6,000 people. A 40% drop. The book is not about trying to make Oelwein look bad but trying to show what is happening all over the country.
Since China joined the WTO in 2001, the US has closed up tens of thousands of factories and lost over 5,000,000 manufacturing jobs. The Democratic Party used to be the party of the working class but is not any more. These people have no place to turn.
Jeb Bush was the GOP establishment favorite in 2015 but lost to Trump as he had no clue about the plight of the working class. I would have thought Hillary would have picked up on that but she didn't. Hillary just went for identity politics and lost.
The issue of the election is China. I would argue most Democrats don't get that and I am not some big Trump guy as I plan on voting for Biden.
Nick Reding’s unnerving portrait of Oelwein, Iowa, depicts a catastrophe of Chernobylish dimensions, precipitated by the loss of jobs and the rise of methamphetamines.
