From living in Iowa City since the mid 90's, I always wondered why anyone promoted where they went to high school in Iowa City in business advertising. I don't care where someone went to high school or college if I need someone's business services. Can anyone explain this to me and if it makes any difference in who you do business with?

I will make an effort to support the businesses of those connected to Regina. 100%. It’s a tight knit supportive community that persists long after graduation.
I could instantly name you 10+ businesses across different categories that I can, and do, patronize because of the owner/employees affiliation with the school.
I suspect that doesn’t happen to the same degree with larger schools.

And, that extends to the local medical community as well. Lots of personal medical decisions based on those people and families you know and trust.

It's really a thing that they do in Iowa City - advertise where they went to HS? It's something that kids have no control over, and would have no bearing on who they are as a person, how smart they are, etc. At least with colleges you can get a general feel for their likely aptitude or training.

Other than family and some people that I went to school with, I don't know where anyone went to high school. I thought that's how it was with everyone.

IC people still wear their high school letter jackets around town?

I've heard it in some advertisements on the radio - "As a City High graduate," etc. I'd rather hear about their certifications or what sets them apart/makes their business the one to choose over their competition. The same goes for the people who say "native (fill in the state)" in their advertising. I don't care if you're from Mars, tell me what your business does and why I should choose it to help me out.

I wouldn't make a serious life and death medical decision based on where someone went to school. But, when it comes time to choose a florist, insurance agent, heating/cooling professional, restaurant, jeweler, realtor, medical specialist, etc. I absolutely factor that in.
We all usually just use online reviews or word of mouth to find these people anyway. I just have a community of people that I generally know, and trust, that I can turn to. Which is great.

Stupid, parochial thinking. I agree with OP

I don't see people advertising where they went to high school and it doesn't matter to me. In fact, I really don't care where someone went to college either. For athletics, I am a Hawkeye fan and don't really care much how the Cyclones are doing in any sport.

Academically and professionally, I don't care where someone gained their education. A good person / worker is what is important.

The only exceptions fall to those people you already know or have heard through friends. For instance, I may need an oral surgery. I will go to the person who is well regarded from other people I know. I don't see that as the same as what OP mentioned.
