- Sole possession of Big Ten conference lead
- Most wins against top 25 teams in the nation
- 9 conference wins by double digits

I could go on. Any voter who really looks at the top 3 teams' bodies of work should put Iowa #1.

Edit: I removed the comment about Maryland's home ball advantage. I was crunching some numbers and came to the conclusion that the data was inconclusive. The one thing that I noticed was that Maryland is a below average 3pt team both at home (30%) and on the road (32%) in conference play. 10th best in the conference combined

Go Hawks!

Iowa lost to Maryland. It doesn't matter though. Iowa still is in control of the conference championship and as long as they end up with a 1 seed I'll be happy. I truly do believe that Iowa is one of the top 4 teams in the country this year. I also think Maryland is as well, if that means anything.

Let's not turn that into another Stanford Band thingy.

Iowa will likely get some #1 votes, and may be deserving of being #1. However, it's hardly a slam dunk argument. Maryland only has 3 losses and they beat us head-to-head. Villanova only has 3 losses as well, and they had an impressive road victory over Providence this week.

Agreed - In my mind the fact that Maryland beat us gives them the nod over us in the rankings this week.

Iowa was nearly even with Maryland on the road, where the Terps hadn't lost in conference in over a year.

It's too bad that we don't get them at Carver, as then I think we'd have a more complete picture

I am fine with 3rd or 4th, as the team ranked #1 has not had much success in keeping it.

besides as the 3 IA is a lock for the Midwest 1 seed any higher and they get moved to a different region as they are setup to reflect where they stand in the rankings,

How can the second best team in a conference be the best team in the nation!?! Iowa handily beat both teams that Maryland lost to.

Herby, How can you seriously NOT want the #1 overall ranking in the nation?! It's right in our grasp and something I've never seen in my lifetime.

1. We lost to them
2. They're an East Coast team
3. They have 3 NBA draft picks in their starting line-up

Facts would make Iowa a clear #1. Which is why KenPom and other computer ratings have Iowa in that exact spot...#1 in the nation.

Subjective opinions form polls, which is why it is entirely possible that a team with nowhere near Iowa's resume, and which is behind them in the Big Ten race (along with every other Big Ten team LOL) is likely to be ahead of Iowa, if not #1, in the human polls.

But, of course, it doesn't much matter as long as the Hawkeyes continue to be the most consistent team in the country. Then they'll be #1 when and where it actually matters.

IA reached #1 in Dr. Tom's 1st season, that was after that team started the season 18-0. #1 is great but being #1 at the end of the season is even better.

this group of SR's are on a roll with todays win they set the All Time win mark for 4 year starters, they beat MSU @ MSU for the 1st since the 1992-93 season also that was the last time IA swept MSU, Fran has now won @ all BT venues although MD was not a member if the BT IA beat MD @ MD in the 2012-13 season on their way to the NIT Championship. Fran is also now above .500 in BT play. Fran needs just 9 more BT wins to tie SA total of 61 BT wins in 8 seasons a mark that Fran can pass in 7 seasons.

Iam happy with what is happening and don't want to jinks the success as what has happened to the other teams that reached #1.

Head to head trumps the transitive property imo. That being said, NC beat Maryland, Oklahoma beat Villanova (convincingly) and KU beat Oklahoma, so it gets complicated. Outside the head to head game, Maryland's 3 losses to NC, UM, and MSU are about the equivalent of our 3 losses to ISU, ND and Dayton (2 out of 3 teams ranked in both cases). Conference schedules aren't balanced in super conferences like the B1G, so I think you have to look at the overall schedule like the NCAA selection committee does. We have 5 wins against top 25 teams and Maryland has two. We have 4 losses and Maryland has three. Are good wins more important than number of losses? I don't know. At the end of the day, ranking doesn't really matter right now, and we will have our chance to pass Maryland.

Sounds great but there are two teams ahead of us in the polls that also took care of business.

I'd be shocked if we were not #3
and we lost to one of them... I sort of think we won't jump Oklahoma, and may not be higher than 6th in the other poll.

Number 1 now is meaningless except for bragging. But that bragging, it can be short lived. Be number 1 at the end of the year and it can go on for 12 months.

My thoughts as well...I don't really care if we make #1 in the regular season.
It would be cool, don't get me wrong....but winning the dance>random rankings all day long!

The OP is either desperately grasping at straws to convince himself we're a deserving #1...or he's trolling us.

A) Nova was ranked ahead of us this past week and won both their games...pummeling #11 Providence.
B) Maryland, who beat us the previous week and was ranked ahead of us this past week won both their games...including #18 Purdue.

Iowa won both their games...vs conference bottom feeders.

It's like the OP is hoping fans from other schools see this thread and post it on their board to show how delusional/cocky we've become.

Iowa has more top 25/50 wins than ANY other team in the nation. Iowa is the sole leader of the Big Ten, having played by far the toughest conference schedule to date. But then those are inconvenient facts for a lot of folks. Sorry, but facts are stubborn like that.

And Maryland beat Iowa, by six, at home, so Maryland deserves to be ranked higher? Really? It's a one-game season, is it?

OK, then, when Iowa beat top ten Purdue in Iowa City in Fran's first year, then that meant Iowa should have been ranked ahead of Purdue. Head to head, bay-bee! LOL

Human polls factor in human deduction (including bias)...if you want 100% logic then quote the Kenpom or Sagarin rankings.

Based on how this past week played out Iowa deserves #3; perhaps by this time next week fortune will shine on us and give the humans no other choice.

Iowa as well as other of the highest ranking AP Top 25, as in any week could actually fall this week if teams right below Iowa who also went 2-0 had wins over better competition. I would think humans or the computer would factor in such things as the RPI strength at the bottom of a teams schedule.

To compare ISU has played and won 4 games with a lower RPI than 151 while Iowa has played and won 7 games with an RPI lower than 151. I have looked at several RPI rankings for Top 25 teams and none of them played 7 games with an RPI lower than 151 and win or lose Iowa will add an 8th team to that lowest RPI when they play Minnesota who now has an RPI of 227. In their last 7 games at the current RPI which changes daily Iowa doesn't play any team with an RPI in the top 50. Win or lose Iowa's RPI will probably drop because the number is based on the competition you have played to date and the toughest part of their schedule is in the rear view mirror.

Your posts are becoming even more difficult to read... and that is saying something.

First point: It may come as a surprise to you, but everything is not a comparison of the team you like and Iowa. The team you like does not even have a place in this discussion; they will not be receiving any votes as the best team in the land at this point in the season.

Second point: There comes a time when all of the metrics and analytical mumbo-jumbo becomes counter-productive. You have exceeded that juncture.

[Hey... why no update on that super sensational rookie guard in the NBA that took over for the 'injured' Russell Westbrook? I thought for sure that you would want to keep everyone updated seeing as how you broke the (erroneous) news on here. ]

Iowa should be #3 this week behind Villanova and Maryland but there's no reason why they couldn't be #2 or #1 with their resume.

Go Hawks!!

This.

Keep winning and we could get there, but #1 is not deserved this week. It only matters come tourney seeding time.

It could be a very interesting season. Winning it all is extremely difficult, but this year seems as wide open as any I can remember. I plan to enjoy the ride thoroughly, heaven knows how long it will be before we see thus kind of success in my three favorite sports! (Pinches self.)

Yeah, the office pools are going to be wild this year. There just aren't the sure thing elite 8 locks like there usually are.
