Why was Kelly Pfeiffer standing there in the first place???

During a timeout the officials gather on the opposite side of the court from the benches. Then near the end of the tiimeout, each huddle has a ref come give the first horn warning while the 3rd ref takes the ball to the inbounding spot.

Seemed very odd that Pfeiffer was standing that close to the Iowa huddle during the timeout, especially after recently giving a T to Fran. Generally, officials are taught to deescalate by either staying away from the bench they gave a T too, or to go up the coach and try to have a talk. Pfeiffer did the opposite and in fact made a step towards Fran.

This post has nothing to do with Fran and his actions (those people have already made their feelings well known). This post is about the actions of Kelly Pfeiffer.

Ya, it seems like some people are forgetting that it takes 2 to have a stare down. Not defending Fran just pointing out the ref has to take some of the blame too.

Guy was egging Fran on. Trying to instigate another T. He should be fined or reprimanded for his actions. Officials should never actively attempt to alter the outcome of a game.

I believe he was standing where the ball would be put back in play after the timeout, but maybe not. Also that ref was not the one who T'd Fran up I don't believe. I think your searching for something thats not there. If he would have wanted to he could certainly have T'd Fran up, and ended the game right there.

This is correct. Two officials typically stand on the blocks away from the benches during timeouts, but the official who will next put the ball in play stands at that spot (unless it's directly in front of the bench).

Watching it in real time, Pheifer took the long route around to get to that spot and try to avoid the bench, but Fran (slowly) followed him all the way to the spot.

Good grief. If Fran spent a fraction of the time barking about defense instead of railing on the officials, we might actually have some next level success.

Always have to blame others. Welcome to America 2023.
Can't say I've ever seen you blame yourself for your mistakes on here, of which there have been plenty. ;)

Pointing fingers at others, however................masterclass.

A T for a stare! Really?

He would have been carried out of Craver in a box. A very small box.

Does barking at players all the time work?

The refs for the most part in the big 10 are bad, and they have been bad since I started watching Iowa Basketball from about 1979 until now. I remember Jim Bain for years and thinking that guy was the worst official I had ever seen. (I still think that today) It seems that being bad is in their ref hand book. For the most part, they let teams mug each other, then when tensions heat up they start calling petty fouls. But I cannot remember any year that I can remember that I did not watch a game and think "These refs suck". The Big letting players mug each other always bites them in the ass when they get to the NCAA's as they actually call fouls there.

The biggest part I hate is that they let players mug each other for so long and then call the game differently the last 5-10 minutes of the game.
My wife (no pics) who never agrees with me, even agreed with this on Saturday. With around 6 minutes left, I told her “alright, this is the time of the game that the refs take over”. Once the game was over, she says you weren’t kidding, they really do try to be the stars of the show at the end of the game.
She typically doesn’t watch the games and doesn’t care much about sports, so I feel it’s pretty obvious when she can see it.

if you don't know why, ask. He was where he should be to inbounds the ball after the to. Fran went out of his way to go there and his behavior is the very definition of a t.

It was actually about this time (5:34 75-70 MSU) that Connor was called for what appeared to be weakest illegal screen of the season by Lewis Garrison. Something Hauser had done numerous times before this point. Sandfort made that three point attempt too.

Fast forward 20 seconds of game clock and Rebraca is whistled for a blocking foul on Hall backing in aggressively.

Then there was the foul on Ulis or a jump ball that led to the T.

Kelly Pfeifer was definitely the one who T’d up Fran. They actually showed him doing it as Ulis ran by to check out of the game.

the mugging part hurts Iowa because Fran likes the finesse type players that can run and shoot, not the Clubber Lang's of the BB world that can beat and bang. LOL

Thats a fans point of view so I understand your comment. However lets be honest here. These comments of support for Fran that he was "defending his players is crap, and everyone knows it. Does he do that at times, ABSOLUTELY, and good for him. But thats not what that was. He was upstaging the ref, and making a point. He was in NO way defending a player during his stare down, and anyone who takes off the black & gold glasses for a minute would admit that. And YES there is a rule about intimidating and official, and that is exactly what Fran was trying to do. He was not defending anyone during that timeout.

What was Fran doing to earn the T? The T you seem to know so much about, except who actually issued it.

I would love to see Fran get T’d up for staring down a ref 10 feet away. Intimidating being the reason. We’ve seen Izzo, Underwood, and Ryan all within inches of officials grimacing and screaming without being issued T’s. That’s not intimidating behavior? A Technical would have proved Fran’s point.

Fran wanted to say more to the Kelly but he knew the exact outcome if he did. If you go back and watch the rest of that game, Fran doesn’t speak to any of the officials from there on out, including OT. It’s mainly Gatens doing the talking with the officials. Smart move on the Iowa coaching staff.

I've NEVER said that I wanted Fran T'd up, and we all know that Fran is certainly not the only coach that does this stuff, Izzo and Underwood in particular are red asses on a regular basis. Underwood just like Fran looks like he's having a heart attack when he gets worked up. We also know that Fran has a history, (some of it earned) with numerous refs, and he does have to deal with that. There is in fact a rule about coaches intimidating officials. You obviously don't agree with me, but for my money thats exactly what Fran was trying to do with the stare. He was not defending any player during that timeout.

If a ref feels intimidated by a coaches stare from more than 5 feet away, then he has no business being on the floor. The refs sucked in this game. We had a foul called on us when a MSU player tripped on his teammates foot. After 1 quickly called T, Fran couldn't afford a 2nd one and yet the ref needed to know he screwed up. I thought it was perfect. I thought the ref walking towards Fran was a little like he was letting Fran know he couldn't do anything about it, but that he wasn't intimidated either. To me the ref was saying, "point taken".
