Awful would be an understatement for those officials.

I know the old adage of "if you think you can do better...", but high school officiating seems to have really gotten pretty poor in recent years.

Of course parents' behavior has too....

Fran, please do whatever it takes to make sure this young man sticks with his verbal commitment and becomes a hawk. Fierce competitor with tremendous skills. He could be very special!

It will be a few years before we are able to truly judge our recruits as basketball players, but Tom's interviews with Conner and Cordell got me really excited about them as young men. Joe seems to have the most talent on the court and I'd expect he also shows the maturity to warrant his early offer too.

I will predict these kids make us proud regardless of how they play. Good job by our staff.

Not to be a dick, but we really could use some more. I'm 25 and other than the occasional college kid, I'm the youngest one at our meetings by about 10-15 years. Young officials are getting chased off by a-hole parents and coaches. So you're left with guys that have been doing it forever, which is sometimes good and sometimes really unfortunate. Many of those guys can't keep up with the pace of play in bigger schools anymore.

Sorry for the rant, but always try to defend HS refs when I can.

Thanks Stormhawk - I personally would not to be a high school official because of how bad the parents have gotten. It is truly a problem. As for Joe...this kid is a Hawk through and through...there is NO WAY he will not be a Hawkeye. It is his dream come true!!!

GO HAWKS!!!!

Lots of upside if you can do your time and climb the ranks. You could be the next Teddy TV Valentine. Hang in there

No need to be sorry. I've considered actually doing it over the years but my kids' stuff kept me from doing it. They're all older now--which sadly make me older as well--so I'd have the time....as corny as it sounds, I just love the game and reasonably certain I could do a better job than a fair chunk of those doing it now (of course those doing it now likely think they do a good job too):D

.

I have a couple of buddies who are done officiating after this year. They have been doing it for about 8-10 years now. They said it is not worth their time or effort. No matter what every game they do, someone is upset and parents are becoming animals. They stated many reasons, but the two I took away from are the parents and also some the players attitudes. I was kind of curious so i went the other night to watch them ref. They have tried talking me into it the past 2-3 years.

I went and watched them ref a small school game the other night and I was embarrassed by some of the parents behavior. Parents screaming for an over and back when the ball was tipped into the back court??? Another one, some dad jumped up and down screaming for an over the back call (I was on the opposite side of it and the kid went straight up and got the rebound). The kid never blocked him out, just stood there and tried out jumping him! Those were the two biggies, but overall just poor display of sportsmanship by both sides. Kids even were questioning the calls and throwing their hands up in the air. I will say this, both coaches were very professional and I did not see one negative out of them. Sadly the parents and players attitudes and behavior over shadowed what was a pretty good game.

I don't think I will ever get into officiating basketball. Too many crazies out there to deal with.

I go to a lot of high school games and often I am on the floor taking pictures so I can hear a lot of the things directed at refs. I'm very glad that most of the time there is pretty good sportsmanship at the games. When the two teams are rivals, or good teams battling for their position in the conference/state, the level of tension in the crowd leads to a few dumba$$es going too far. Refs usually do a great job of ignoring these clowns and rarely kick fans out of the gym, even though they have every right to. I experienced a great example of refs using restraint recently when I heard a student in the stands about 10 feet from the court shout during a free throw "hey ref, does your wife know you're screwing us?"

I have pretty thick skin (you have to to be successful) and if the students throw a good burn on me, I usually chuckle and let them know it's all in fun. I would probably laugh pretty good if they yelled your quote at me. Give credit where credit is due and that's a new one to me so points for creativity. Parents, OTOH, no way.

I officiated when I was in college. It was actually a good job to have in college, I enjoyed it but the fans were awful. Of course everyone bitched about the judgement calls, but you just laugh when someone is screaming at you who has no clue about the rules, for example bitching about the ball being passed into the backcourt on an inbounds pass, crying for over and back, that was the best.

My favorite one that the majority of fans will always scream about is when the ballhandler has crossed into the frontcourt with one foot, but still has the other (or the ball) in the backcourt, and then brings the foot that had crossed back from the frontcourt to the backcourt. Guaranteed that 95% of the fans will scream for over and back, and they will be wrong.

OK, I usually want to punch punks in the student sections that yell crap, but I have to admit, this one is pretty good. Shake his hand and compliment the creativity....then slap them;)

I know 1a/2a officials that always do a good job. Just depends on who the AD can get that night. Only thing is high school refs tend to call anticipation fouls. High school basketball is malign compared to the amount of parent behavior in the wrastlin atmosphere.

I umpired, officiated football and basketball while I was in college as well. I loved doing it and the $$ was awesome. My schedule was always open so I could pick up so many games, that it actually was a living for me. I remember one year I worked damn near every night during the winter between (AAU, HS, JH, and JV). My only break was Christmas break and there were tons of AAU tournaments to get in on.

I still do football here and there and love it. The different schools, traditions and playing styles is fun to watch. Basketball I got wore out by AAU tournaments, as well with Baseball. It got to a point where I was officiating basketball in the summer along with umpiring baseball. It got to be too much, so I gave up the two. The parents were a major issue in both those sports. Football all you hear is the coaches and thats fine to me.
