Assuming we have a great showing from the crowd and we light Pitt up like a Christmas tree.

Or do they generally wait until closer to signing day?

There are basketball recruits coming to the game right? I thought I read that somewhere.

I know Tyler Cook is scheduled to be there. Not sure who else is scheduled for officials or unofficials.

While not a given, it is certainly possibly that he could commit on his visit. It's happened before and I'm hopeful it happens this time.

I feel like the football crowd is back and is going to impress these recruits. I hope they walk away saying wow, I want to be apart of this.

As of now, Cook is visiting this weekend and has a home visit with Iowa coming up as well. From what I understand he is setting up a home visit with Florida. And he has plans to visit Arkansas. So I'd have to guess that unless something completely overwhelms him he will likely enjoy his visit and continue the recruiting process.

That is kind of my point. Hopefully the crowd is old school and electric, the way it use to be and he says, "I am done with the recruiting, I am now a Hawkeye."

Well, I will say that if he is the right fit that I hope him to be, the crowd and game will affect him somewhat.

Wouldn't this be a sweet little scenario...its a beautiful evening in Kinnick for a night game. The fb team comes out and totally kicks pitt's butt and after the game as the crowd is on cload 9 for the big win, the pa announcer says "ladies and gentlemen, Tyler Cook has something to announce " he gives the mic to tyler, "I Tyler Cook have decided to join the Hawkeye family and become a hawk".....how bout that scenario kids?

This is not completely relevant to the topic but I've always wondered whether it makes a big difference which player is hosting the recruit for an official visit. Stated more broadly, is the player host an important factor in a recruits visit?

Might thought is that I suppose it can be - their personalities click, similar backgrounds, etc.

My guess is that it makes very little difference in almost every case but I don't know.

As a coach, you would probably want to put some critical thought into the host player if for no other reason than to avoid a possible host-recruit conflict or personality mismatch.

I like the way you think, dude.

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day Tyler Cook will join us
And the world will be as one

If that is the case, lets find him a hot ass chick to host him, lol. I kid, I kid. Great question.

I think Sat night is going to be a great night to impress a kid thinking about coming here.

The visit is coming at a good time. I hope the weather is beautiful and the FB team keeps the crowd energized. I think the host can make a difference and it wouldn't hurt to introduce Mr. Cook to some attractive Hawk fans...

I had the same thought, except when he get's the mic, he spits hot flames on the mic, decides not to pursue basketball, but instead becomes a rapper.

Combination of Kurt and Nu2u's contributions. About the announcement and who hosts Tyler.

Woody as host. "Ladies and Gentlemen, Shushhhhhhhhhh...and now, Tyler Cook....."I am committing!!!"

Hutton as host. Microphone comes on, we hear, "Say it! SAY IT!!!!"............"Ouch, ok, ok, I Tyler Cook....."

Uhl as host, "Achtung! Wir haben eine neue Hawkeye, ein paar Worte sagen möchte... " Tyler, "huh?"

As a former college athlete and the father of sons who were recruited I can tell you the right player/student host can make a big difference. If the recruit finds they do not like a potential teammate it can push them elsewhere. With 17-18 year old kids, small things can often make the difference. As for getting a cute girl to host, all I can say is the SEC schools have long had a reputation for doing just that as part of the recruitment effort.

I like the combo. Woody quiets the crowd. Hutton gets him to talk. Uhl confuses him with his German so Tyler is saying yes before he knows what happened.

I thought I read on here earlier this year that PJ does a lot of the hosting, I believe they said he had a great personality and that virtually everyone likes him.

That is kind of my point. Hopefully the crowd is old school and electric, the way it use to be and he says, "I am done with the recruiting, I am now a Hawkeye."

This is basically everything that Cook is not, and I am glad he isn't.

He is calm, cool, and collected. He's stated that he's taking his 4 officials (+Mizzou) and will take his time to make the right decision both for him and his family. If a football game is going to woo him, he probably would have selected Florida two weeks ago. They have a better program historically and the state is 60 degrees warmer in the winter than IC.

He's coming here to play basketball, not watch football. If a football game against Pitt is why he would decide to come here, I'd probably second guess his intelligence--those consist of about 6 weekends a year. I think he has a bit more of a collected head on his shoulders than to be so rash. I also think it's so short sided of this fan base to think that a football game would make a basketball recruit want to come to IC.

Hopefully he is making the decision on overall state of basketball affairs in IC...the fact that he could start immediately, likes the facilities, thinks the core is there to win in the B1G, likes the overall vibe in Iowa City, and those will be the reasons for his committing / not committing.

If it's coming down to a football game, you may as well send him to Florida.

I think this point is more relevant than whether or not he has fun at a football game. I remember back when I toured colleges, if you had a bad host or didn't enjoy your experience it certainly left a bad taste in your mouth. I think the fact that he's going to a college to play basketball that the priorities would be:

1. Enjoying their time with the host / team / chemistry (finding the same things entertaining, funny, important--basically fitting in).

2. Liking the facilities / coaching staff

3. State of the team -- will they be good? can I come in and play?

3. Seeing yourself going to school and living in the town / city.

We're of course all just talking here. But my guess is Tyler will get a chance to scrimmage a bit with the guys, and if they don't end up having a meal at the McCafferys I'd be stunned.

At some point young Mr. Cook will get a sit down chat where Fran explains the role he sees Tyler playing on an Iowa team. And of course presuming his Dad is there he'll be in on this as well.

So what's Cook going to see?

1) A good group of guys and yes, Peter will probably be his host. But one thing we don't have to worry about is anyone on the team not presenting themselves as a good person to play with. In fact it's one of the things we can be proud of as Iowa fans, we get good young men. It's never going to be perfect of course, but character matters.

2) There are coaches who do it for the money, the show, and/or there are coaches that were coaches before all that. McCaffery was a player, assistant, has brought teams up time and again. He was never a "name" guy. And I think from what little I know, the "family" talk we hear about all the time starts with he and his family, which the players become part of over time.

3) From reports I've heard. Tyler can expect Conner McCaffery to tell him at least a couple times to come to Iowa as when Conner is the point guard he'll be setting him up. :)

There won't be bag men and empty promises. There won't be slick talk.

And eventually either Cook will pick Iowa or someplace else.

I'm ok with this. The "other" methods of recruiting remind me of strangers in cars offering kids candy. I don't want the program I'm a fan of to be anything like that.

I had the same thought, except when he get's the mic, he spits hot flames on the mic, decides not to pursue basketball, but instead becomes a rapper.

This, orrrrr, he takes the mic and says " I will be attending the University of North Carolina"

I am sure there are times when the player-host doesn't matter, but I am also sure there are times when it matters a lot. For instance, I'm sure there are recruits that ask the player-host what they think of the coach. If a host says he doesn't like the coach, or wishes that he had picked a different school, I would imagine it might make a big difference.

My daughter has been on a women's team at Iowa. Her coach is, well, not very impressive. Last year about a third of the team transferred and many of the girls had decided they would be transferring by January or February. My daughter would laugh that her coach was so clueless about what his/her players thought of him/her, that he/she regularly asked girls that had already decided to transfer to host some of the top recruits. As you can imagine, this is not a program that is "on the rise".

One of the things that is seldom mentioned, is that Hillcrest is the athletic dorm, and the inside of Hillcrest looks like a military barracks from the early 1960s. I would be shocked if we haven't lost out on dozens of recruits over the last decade because of our depressing housing situation. I think people are really underestimating how much of a difference the new athletic dormitory is going to make. They can't get it built soon enough. It is going to pay big dividends.

This x 100000000000. Huge advantage. I played college baseball in the Florida and the deciding factor of similar situations was the freshman housing situation. I ended up choosing South Florida over UCF, Stetson and u of Tampa because of the housing. I think it does really factor in.

Absolutely

This is true, and during visits in the summer for FB tailgaters for recruits the football players and the basketball players often hang out. A football recruit that I brought to tailgater hung out with PJ, Woody, and a few other bball players, so that was pretty cool I thought

Very true, IMO this is the final piece to the puzzle for us to up our recruiting to the 'elite' level......great post

I'm so excited about the athletic dorm. And, not to hijack the thread but just a quick comment. Rutgers. I've been suspicious of the advantages Rutgers brings to the Big Ten, and especially comments that the school would like to do major upgrades to their facilities but gets caught in New Jersey politics and might have to wait for Big Ten money to start flowing in.

I still wonder if somewhere down the road they won't end up being another Northwestern and enjoying the conference without bringing much to it? Hope I'm wrong. But just remember all the talk about television markets. That's great, but people have to actually want to watch a game. Hey, Mr. Delany and the rest of the Big Shots.....take a look at what little 'Ol Iowa is doing with this Athletic Dorm and maybe ask yourselves which team you should be promoting?

Ok, Hijack over. ;)

I'm completely stumped. I don't see Caitlyn Jenner anywhere on Iowa's list of coaches.

I heard that Patrick is darn near ready to pull the trigger if Margaret will let him.

They've already brought an impressive rap sheet.

They already built a new dorm that opened this August (Petersen Hall) that hosts majority of the athletes. All the basketball players live together on the second floor (out of 10) which is very convenient I'm sure so dorms should be an advantage as it is and will be even more improved in 2017
