Will Baer start next year?

Doesn't matter, he'll be in plenty and make a difference when he is in. Leave him at 6th man, he's really good there.

he deserves to ... but Fran might want to keep that energy insertion coming off the bench...a lot will depend on the new bigs and how that all plays out.

Bohannon-Moss-Baer is not a bad trio with Williams-Dailey-McCaffery fighting it out for PT.

if it was me...he starts

He is clearly one of our best 5 players THIS year. Fran has chosen to bring him off the bench, but he's always in there at crunch time.

Anyone that has ever come off the bench in a basketball game will tell you - it's hard. You've cooled down from warm ups, and everyone else is in the flow. It's harder than starting.

Fran will figure it out.

I agree. Years from now it will be known as the "Nicholas Baer 6th Man of the Year Award". It seems like he was born to play that role and, like you said, he will be sitting next to McCaffery at tip-off with his warm-ups off; Baer will get an abundance of minutes.

Both Coach Fran and Nick Baer want what is best
for the team to win. Perhaps his energy off the
bench is still the best place for him. However, he
will still get plenty of minutes during the game and
especially in the last 4 minutes of the game.

PEMSL might be first off the bench next year at 4/5 spot. Baer seems like he will start at the 3.

It doesn't matter. Starting just means these are the five kids Fran thinks have the best chance to get us to a fast start. If I had to pick the five best players-- it would be Cook, Jok, Baer, Bohannon and Pemsl. Fran does not want Baer and Pemsl to get fouls early, as they are prone to do, so they come off the bench. Fran also has a team that he likes to finish games with, and then you have Williams, Bohannon, Jok, Baer and one big who could be Cook, Wagner or Pemsl., depending on what they need, plus maybe Ellingson.. If Wagner and Moss were "True" starters they'd be playing a lot more minutes through the middle of the game, not just mainly at the beginning and the end.. The only true starters we have are Jok, Cook and Bohannon. Next would be Baer. Just my thoughts.

I like him off the bench. Right now I don't mind Wagner getting the minutes at the start of both halves. Don't really like Wagner on the court when they get into bonus situation from line (although really Baer has been pretty bad at the FT line in B1G play). Bring in high energy Baer when the opponent is just a little tired and he runs circles around them! He'll get his minutes but I like him at the end of each half as opposed to start of each half.

Baer just keeps exceeding what I've thought he could do. Agree with just about everything said so far in that he is clearly a top 5 player, this year and next and it doesn't matter too much because he'll get his minutes. If Fran does decide to start him I hope somebody emerges as an energy guy off the bench. There will be battles for PT and if a guy can lift the energy level each time he steps on the court starting with defense, rebounds, and hustle plays it may be a way for a guy like Wagner to keep get minutes on a crowded roster.

That is a tough one. I keep on coming back to how great it would be to see Williams and Bohannon to start together. We have that luxury next year with Connor coming in to spell the point. It would be really nice to see Bohannon starting at the 2. Kind of seems like that is his natural position. Outside of those two, I think you start Moss, Cook, and Wagner. Maybe you give Baer the start over Moss?

Baer seems to be following the Chris Street/Aaron White trajectory of under recruited, really hard working kid that improves tremendously with his time at Iowa. Baer will be starting at some point.

The stats don't agree about Baer being foul prone. He's averaging 1 foul per 10 minutes played. For as hard as he plays, he doesn't make many bad fouls. I don't recall him ever fouling out of frustration like many players do.

I hope he comes off the bench. He is the engine that powers the bus. He also seems to be one of those players most comfortable coming off the bench.

The Baer is the rare player that has more impact off the bench. He comes in and plays all over the floor. His impact is far greater because his energy explodes in an already existing pace and uses it against the Hawks adversary. A rare kind of player that seems to be getting better and better.

Baer is great off the bench for a few reasons. One, obviously, is energy. The other, I would argue, is more important and more valuable—and maybe what keeps him in this role moving forward. It is that he is so versatile and has such high basketball IQ.

Baer can sub out a wing or a post. Moss off to a shaky start? Enter Baer. Wagner playing a little tight, a bit tentative? Enter Baer. Defense okay but offense sputtering? Baer sparks with a big three or by keeping possessions alive with offensive rebounding. Offense okay but defense struggling? Baer knows how to get that heading in the right direction. He is Iowa's Swiss Army Knife.

Who was MVP of the Finals two years ago for the Warriors? Wasn't Steph or Klay. It was their Swiss Army Knife 6th Man, Andre Igoudala — a former All-Star and I believe at one time leading scorer for the 76ers.

This obsession with who starts baffles me. Yes, Iowa can get off to slow starts. So maybe Baer alleviates that (maybe he doesn't). Personally, if forced to choose, I would rather start slow and finish the half strong, than vice versa.

As far as I''m concerned, Baer remaining 6th man is the ideal. He's great in the role. And if Fran feels he is forced to start Baer next year, that means some of the heirs apparent maybe haven't developed. I hope that is not the case.

I hope Baer is 6th Man, wins the award again, and is the rare (has it ever happened?) 6th Man of the Year to also make First Team All-B1G.

Baer's 3 point shooting has been spectacular the last three games. If he keeps it up next year, it will be hard to not be in the starting line-up. But what a 6th man he has become!
