To see what Fran does with the extra scholarship. I saw another thread about Bear getting a ship but I have not seen an official announcement. He probably will get one. I think our biggest need is a point guard transfer. That would give Williams and Bohannon time to further develop. College basketball requires good point guard play.

While the idea of a PG transfer sounds like a good idea, the odds of getting anyone decent enough to help Iowa seems like finding a needle in the haystack. Great 5th year grads that are not going to the pros, are seeking a perennial high profile NCAA tournament team (i.e., like Louisville, Syracuse or UNC but not a probation case). Moss has some decent ball handling skills so between Moss, CWill and JoBo next year's PG assignment is covered. Maybe not great, but covered and developing. And hitting the Jucos at this point and time is really late in the game. Pass

Recruiting a 2017 stud (top 75 national player ) at guard besides having Connor McC as a SG should be at the top of next year's recruiting class. Connor will need a year just to improve his muscle tone. Getting a recruit like Jordan Goodwin means a player who can play and contribute as a freshman but not likely start. Goodwin would be player that would raise the level of athleticism and depth of the program. He would push the starters for PT. I have already deleted Brady Ellingson from my future Hawks roster. One way or another, Ellingson is not a part of Iowa's future. This level is beyond his talents. Sorry if my words offend anyone but after watching him this year, I cannot believe he really belongs in this program.

I don't foresee Iowa landing Jeremiah Tilmon and, likewise, Malik Williams may be a real challenge to land. A guy like Jack Nunge could be a healthy alternative. Jack will need at least a redshirt year to develop but he could be Iowa's Ethan Happ / second Aaron White.

There are several Midwest PG available in the 2018 class. Courtney Ramey has an offer from Iowa and is now teammates with fellow St.Louis native Carte'Are Gordon. Gordon (6'8" 250 PF Rivals Top 25 2018) also has an Iowa offer.

Villinova has multiple guys who can get the get the offense started maybe Fran is striving for that

Moss
Williams
Uhl

Maybe Jok will do this

I'm thinking our PG spot will be covered as well. There will be a learning curve no doubt but we will have several options for different situations.

I agree options are limited for a player next year but recruiting a 5th year transfer for next year wouldn't effect 2017 scholarship numbers.

You can do both.

Majority opinion on Ellingson since he joined the Hawjeyes has seemingly gone from mild curiosity to mixed skepticism to harsh criticism then personal derision and now outright hostility. The present level is not warranted IMO.

He just completed his freshman season. I'm not willing to make conclusive judgments after one year. Ellingson was clearly recruited to fill the designated 3PT shooter role. Can he rebound from a disappointing frosh season? I don't know, hope so (his shooting stroke has always looked pretty good to me). But I do know that a train load of players with successful careers at Iowa would never have made it if future opportunities had been eliminated based on how they played as freshman.

Totally agree.

The disappointment of the senior guards not being able to create offense is being transferred to Ellingson who is a spot up shooter. Totally different roles.

Im not real high on Ellingson but at this point comparing him to Ogelsby who was an anomaly, a shooter who never could shoot for four years, is stupid considering most freshman struggle to shoot.

Fran has to find a JUCO or a 5th year guy who can create! I don't care how good his offense is, Fran is looking for a guy who can get to the lane and either dump off or kick out. That is what his offense strives off of and the last 4 years we have not had that. Frans first 2 years he had a PG who could create and get to the lane.

Fran has to find a decent PG.

I will remain skeptical, as this is NOT his first year in college. He is a second year freshman. If he showed serious promise like Baer or Uhl, being in their 2nd year in the system, I would give him a break. But, he doesn't.

If Fran can find a Bryce Cartwright type PG, then go for it. He was a wonderful find. I'm not sure there are any Cartwright level PG's out there that are left. Bank the schollie.

To be fair he's been in the system for two years not one.

He was granted a medical redshirt his 1st year. I might not have all the details exactly right but, if memory serves....
--Brady had a serious foot injury before or just after he arrived at Iowa.
--The injury was significant enough that he elected to have surgery to fix the problem. He was unable to practice and was walking around in a boot for quite a while.
--He played sparingly in a handful of games during his first year before deciding to shut it down due to the ongoing foot pain.
--His doctor put him back in the boot and he applied for a medical redshirt.

Yes, for sure, he has been on the team or "in the system" for two years but a significant part upfront was dealing with a serious injury and/or incapacitating pain.

Just to be clear, none of that explains his less than impressive rFr season. At the same time, if you are going to include him in the system, stats show that he did make 4 of 6 3PT FGAs as a true frosh.

2 out 3 in 7 minutes against Longwood ( Iowa won 77 to 44). 1 for 1 in 8 minutes against UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) (Iowa won 77 to 47).1 for 2 in 5 mintues against Iowa State (home game where Iowa lost 90 to 75).

Real defining moments for a resume. Did Fran buy pizza for the guys afterwards? Participation trophies for the team members?

I'm sure that Fran can just go down to the Grad Transfer Store and pick out one that would fit our needs. Probably a lot of great alternatives that are there for the taking.

I agree with nu2u that criticism of Ellingson is beyond where it should be. I too am skeptical that he will become a major contributor, but it is too early to be sure that he can't be an effective shooter off the bench. In case you haven't noticed, we are a little short on shooting guards with the 2 transfers.

So those baskets don't count because they didn't come against Duke? Sorry man, those buckets are on the books whether you like it or not.

I see that you brought out the tired and ridiculously overused "participation trophy" BS. Those games were sanctioned regular season games. I sure as hell hope he participated and played well because I know exactly how you would have reacted if Iowa had lost those games or missed each of his attempts against ISU.

I've already mentioned that Brady had an unremarkable freshman season. However, two of his better performances were against Dayton (a 5 point loss) where he hit 3 of 5 3PT FGAs and Purdue where he made 2 of 4 (a 7 point win). I hope those teams meet your standard in determining whether of not they count.
