Will Dale Jones fit in the rotation once he gets back?

I believe he is set to come back in January; Fran used 9 guys last night; and with Cook coming back soon, its going to get interesting to see how this all plays out

Great question. If he's healthy, with his length and shooting ability it would be hard not to put him in the rotation. Probably takes Uhl's minutes.

If he trusts his leg enough to move laterally on defense.

He could give us another look at the 4 and open up the floor more than Uhl, Wagner, Cook, or Pemsl. I can envision Pemsl in the post with Jok, Moss, J Bo, and Jones also on the floor being a nightmare to defend.

Unfortunately I don't know if he's ever going to be healthy enough to earn the minutes his skill level before the injury would have demanded. We can always use another weapon and IMO Jones had the potential to be just that. With the experience the kids have gained and the game they've shown, earning time coming back from an injury is going to be a difficult process.

The improvement the freshmen have shown will stall out in Big Ten play at some point. It will be nice to have an older player who's been around, albeit not in the Big Ten, who can help out at that time and should be reasonably rested from the injury as long as he is back in game shape. Otherwise I see him eating into some of Uhl's minutes barring the light turning on for him.

And Baer might be more effective with a slightly reduced role since he is a high energy guy. I could see him having problems keeping up his style of play for 25-30 minutes. But 15-22 minutes, aka four 4-5 minute shifts plus being in there at the end of the game if needed, he could be incredibly effective. That means we really only need Jones to come in for 5-10 minutes per game to hit some shots when the other backups have trouble scoring. That's basically a shift per half of "instant offense", much like Rod Thompson 16 years ago who didn't do much but come in and hit one or two threes per game. And you definitely play him more if he has the hot hand shooting.

He's gotta be better on D to see the floor. Hope he can because we can always use more shooters who can rebound.

This and a log jam of players will probably keep him off the floor. Not sure if he just doesn't have it in his knees anymore but this D has been awful when in.

Its hard to say. I'm not sold that he's going to come back healthy.Until he can play 3 or 4 games in a couple of weeks, and not have swelling in that knee I'd be doubtful. He's also been unable to go full speed, much if at all the last couple of years. He was recovering from previous knee surgery when he went down last year. He's got to be pretty rusty, and out of sinc with the other kids on the team. Wish him the best but......

Wow, okay. I thought Jones was playing pretty well before he went down last year. With a sweet stroke from 3 and a pretty decent rebounder. Guess we all don't see things the same way.

It's just a bit odd that fans have this fixation with a guy who has played a total of 7 games and 80 minutes in 2 years, and who has had 2 ACL repairs in the past 4 years. I applaud the guy for getting back on the floor, at all, this year, even if it was for the 1 game against Seton Hall. Even if he gets back from this latest setback, he will have played exactly 2 minutes (against Seton Hall) in over a year. Expecting him to play any meaningful role this year would not be realistic. If you were the coach, who would you invest minutes in? Cook, Pemsl, Kriener, Baer, Wagner, all of whom are freshmen/sophomores? And all who have been playing/practicing regularly? Or a guy coming off two ACL injuries and who has played 2 minutes in over a year?

It's not out of the realm of possibility that Jones would come off the bench at some point in a game this year and knock down a couple of 3's. But very unlikely that he ends up with regular playing time.

He was a marginal late addition juco recruit. I have no idea why anyone expects anything out of Jones, or ever did.
Ron Steele reported that he would be a welcome addition when we signed him. I figure he knows what he is talking about since he used to do sports.

When has any member of the Iowa media not said that a recruit was a "welcome member of the team." Jones went to high school in Waterloo. He did have a shot at contributing, and was early in the 2015-16 year. But he blew out his ACL again, and then has had other injuries this year. It happens, it sucks.

Jones' injury did open PT for Baer, who became far better than anyone could have imagined.

Exactly right. While it would be great if young Mr. Jones was able to come back and play a key role for the hawks later in the season, I think having expectations of that would be foolish. As has been stated he's played in a half dozen games in the last two plus years. I think Fran would me much better off finding out what he can get from Kreiner, Wagner, Cook, and Pemsyl, all guys who will be here the next several years.

Maybe later in the year somebody gets hurt or something. Then Dale can come in and be our 3 point hero. I hope he gets that chance.

When you have a big guy, who can rebound, drain 3pts, and spread the floor, it definitely helps on the offensive end. On Defense, he would not be any worse than what we have seen so for. Hopefully, that part changes. Soon

I hope he gets to play as well, but not if it means someone got injured. I'm sure thats not what you meant though.

I don't see him getting much floor time. But unforseen circumstances being, well...unforseen, it's not impossible that he gets significant minutes at some point.
As with any player on a team he should be expected to work hard in practice, stay focused, support his teammates. All things a player does whether or not they get any playing time.

I don't know the answer to this either, but I guess the way he was described I sort of thought his play might resemble one of those annoying Eastern European players that are tall and typically play for Northwestern. You don't get traditional "back to the basket" type stuff, but the outside shot and a body that takes up some space.

In my mind I was thinking maybe someone rolls an ankle or is sore from a fall or something. Nothing serious! Just the typical B1G bumps and bruises.

He will play. This team is young and will need a more veteran guy on the court along with Peter. Aside from the ISU game, this team has struggled so minutes are available.

Post:
Uhl has been a major disappointment this year and Jones will have no problem cutting into his minutes. Cook and Pemsl have been dynamic on offense but need work on defense, I'm not saying Jones is a world beater on D but he's a veteran. Wagner is what Wagner is, they're different players. If you need some scoring from outside the paint, Jones will help stretch the floor. Baer is most effective when his minutes are restricted because he's a high energy/effort guy. When his minutes climb, he makes silly fouls.

Wing:
Moss will undoubtedly struggle at some point, all freshmen do. Still haven't seen anything from Ellingson or Christian Williams to lead me to believe they will steal minutes other than giving the starters a breather.

Related to, but beyond the OPs question, is the idea about what roles players fill on a team. I think that is significantly lacking yet. Part of that can be excused with the fact that so many new faces are seeing a lot of court time.

But, at some point, players need to be comfortable and confident in their roles, which might not be exactly what they had in mind for themselves, but are what the team needs. Take Wagner as an example. While I'd love to see him develop into a better scorer, I think his efforts would be of more use if he took the mindset that he wanted to own the boards and become a better defender. Or with Dom Uhl, I wonder if he would come around when given a very focused priority.
Not everyone can do everything. But every team can use a guy like say Reggie Evans, very limited offensively but a vacuum on the boards and a vicious defender.

If he plays respectable defense, rebounds and scores he will see some minutes possibly at the expense of Uhl.

So you're saying if he defends, rebounds, and scores he should get time? ☺

This just struck me as funny. I'm not trying to start a posting war.

I think Dodger makes a very good point here. We really don't have a good idea of what he can bring to the table. I know that he has practiced and played PTL but until he has more true game minutes, we really don't know what he can or can't offer to this team. I will say that I hope Fran doesn't bring him in for the sake of playing him taking out guys like our freshman who are finding quite a groove. If he does come in, I could see him taking Uhl's minutes as its going to be hard to take out Pemsl and (depending on his defense upon return) Cook.

He WILL get a chance. Chances show up for every player, every year.

It may be in a blowout. It may be a foul prone night for a couple of our boys. It may be sending a message to a player that they need to play harder. It may be a situation where we need to get all our best 3 point shooters and mismatches on the floor.

His chance will come and he needs to make an impression if he wants more chances.
