First lady Michelle Obama will attend the funeral of Nancy Reagan on Friday, a White House official said Monday.
The former first lady will be laid to rest beside her husband during a private ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.
President Obama will not attend the funeral. He is scheduled to appear at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, on Friday.

This is the correct thing to do. The security issues with Pres. Obama would take away from the funeral. I know Nancy Reagan's former press secretary and she said this was agreed upon by the family and the White House.We now have an answer to the question posed by the OP....

You would criticize him if he went to the funeral, and you'll criticize him for not going. Obama could say the sky is blue and you'd argue that he's lying.
I would not have criticized him for going to the funeral. I would have given him props for that, even if he stayed in California for the rest of the weekend for some much-needed golf.

Not really, I've never been an Obama apologist. I disagree with many of his policies, and many of the ways he implements policy. But watching the right slobber and attack him for every move he makes is ridiculous. My guess is that he knows if he goes he will be a distraction from the funeral because of the right's hatred for him, so he's staying away out of respect. Plus he's too young to have really known Nancy Reagan.
You go out of respect - period. Anything else is a selfish excuse. I like how you say you are not an apologist yet you make up reasons...

So I had nothing better to do and looked it up. Clinton did not attend Pat Nixon's funeral. Obama did not attend Betty Ford's funeral. Bush did not attend Lady Bird Johnson's funeral. Clinton did attend Jackie Onassis' funeral. There seems to be a fairly established precedent that sitting presidents do not attend the funerals of first ladies. However, you may not continue with your ODS fueled outrage.
So Obama does the same thing that past presidents have done and the right gets outraged... BAU.
As I said before, it was already agreed upon between the family and the White House (I have inside information on this). Pres. Obama and the security detail would be a logistic nightmare for the funeral and extremely disruptive for the family.

Why wouldn't he? A former first lady? Its simply called respect. I can understand however why he would not. He is not a guy who has any respect for any one who dares disagree with his opinion. Disrespect drips off the guy.
