Yeah he played a ton as a FR for Alford. But he wasn't good and never got better. His defense was terrible and he was a bricklayer from the perimeter. His assist to TO ratio was terrible as well. Tired of people comparing JoBo to him. JoBo is a million times tougher and just flat better.
Would put him about 7th or 8th on my Iowa PG list from Lester's time to now. JoBo is going to be in top 3-4

Under performed what many thought he might do. Losing that NW State game sealed his legacy here.

Look up horner's stats. I have no issue putting him in the top 5 for Iowa point guards all time.

JoBo has definitely had a better freshman year than Horner. But to say that Horner didn't get better is ridiculous. He had some games he absolutely lit it up.

And yes, most likely JoBo will have a better career. But Horner wasn't bad, he just never could live up to the hype. Much like Mike Gesell. If it wasn't for end of game failures, Gesell would have been considered one of Iowa's best all-time PGs.

At one time Horner was voted best 3 point shooter by his peers. Bricklayer!!!!!!

Horner was not the best PG at Iowa...but you don't make All-B1G 4 years in a row, BTT MVP & All-American Honor Mention by being wasn't good and never got better.

from 3-Point..
65-153 .425 (So)
86-211 .408 (jr)
70-201 .348 (Sr) ,,ya dipped a little his senior year but 35% not horrible..over 40% is outstanding....OUTSTANDING..

You have exaggerated yourself to the point you cannot even make an argument.

Bohannon is not a million times tougher...what are you..10?

For the record..IMO Bohannon is the better pure outside shooter that doesn't mean Horner was a bricklayer...you sir are flat ass wrong.

Jeff Horner was a great point guard for Iowa and won us a ton of games. He was no Ronnie Lester but neither is JBo. I would maybe rate them something like this.

1) Lester
2) Woolridge
3) Armstrong
4) Horner
5) Oliver
6) Gesell

JBo has a chance to get to #4 at least. He will be the #1 scoring PG for sure barring injury.

Good post and ranking. I agree that JBo has a chance to get to rank just under BJ. I'd swap Horner and Oliver but that is really splitting hairs.

Oliver above Horner but Horner was good. People really think Gesell was as good as Horner?
Agreed. Oliver over Horner. I'd take Carfino over Horner too. Horner wasn't a bad PG. It says more about the level of PG play here at Iowa, over the last 40 years, than it does anything else.

Horner was a better shooter. Gessell was a better PG. Gessell could drive into the lane better than Horner and was a better distributor and on the ball defender (when he wasn't getting stupid fouls). Horner had more weapons than Gessell did early on. Horner might have the edge as the better overall player but Gessell was a better PG.

Won a BTT. I'll take that.

OMG this is so wrong. Gessel couldn't drive without getting snuffed, was a very average passer and a terrible 3 point shooter. Horner could at least get his shot off when he drive because he was taller, was an excellent passer and an above average 3 point shooter. I wouldn't even have Gessel in my top 15 point guards.

Gesell is one of Iowa's all time assist leaders and he led us to an NIT championship game and 3 NCAA bids. These alone put him among Iowa's top point guards. Sorry.

I loved Andre Woolridge. One of my favorite Hawkeyes ever. Ronnie Lester was the best by far. If you saw him play, there would be no discussion and I LOVED Andre Woolridge.

Concur on Dre W and I also loved BJ as well..

I'm too young to remember Lester but from all I've heard, he was truly something special.

Hopefully, Bohannon does not have to keep playing a position that he is not really suited for. He is a shooting guard and not a PG. Forget what people like Calhoun continue to say. Get a PG who can breakdown defenses and you will see Bohannon's true value.

Could somebody with more basketball IQ than me explain the Dean Oliver over Horner argument? That one kind of surprises me but maybe I'm just not remembering how good Oliver was.

Horner was definitely the better player, but he also had better players around him. Horner was more trustworthy to handle the ball in the final 5 minutes (or 10 seconds of the shot clock).

Oliver was amazing but played on bad teams most of his career. Watching him trade 3s with Teyshaun Prince in a NCAA Tourney loss to UK was a thing of beauty.
