I thought winning this tournament would be a huge resume get for the Hawks. With how tough the conference will be this year, I fear the Hawks need to stockpile as many non conference wins as possible. Unfortunately, the Hawks didn't capitalize on a golden opportunity tonight because this Dayton team is top 25 caliber. Oh well, onward and upward.

You realize there is about 26 games left including the conference tourney so a lot can happen both good and bad.

Well to have that win over Dayton would of been nice, this tournament took a bad turn with ND & WSU both losing. Hawks can get a good shot at both if they win today.

This game in no way was a referendum on making the NCAA tourney.
I thought before they played that they have a shot at it as one of the last teams from the B1G to get in. I still think the same.

Last night was Iowa's first crack at Top competition (Marquette was too, but they crapped the bed).

Iowa got punched in the gut and responded. The younger guys I think learned that it ain't easy and some teams are really good. I thought some of the young guns played out of control at times and forced it a little too much. But our post play was not good either. I was shocked at how easy dayton got into the lane.

I think the hawks will learn from this.

I feel very good about our NCAA tournament chances. A lot of things came together to cause the Dayton loss that won't occur again. Bottom line is Dayton is a very good team that was playing at a late season level and Fran's teams never look good this early on.

If we finish this tournament 2-1 I'll be pretty happy. 1-2 would be disappointing but not a disaster. 0-3 would be bad.

Dayton is highly likely to be a tourney team.
Many of Iowa's weaknesses were exposed. But they aren't fatal.
Hawks will have their ups and downs this year. This just happened to be one of the downs.

Before the season, I thought they weren't a tourney team. I'm having second thoughts, but I'm still on the fence. The potential is there, but I think they're missing something.

Noncon and B1G are two different seasons. A lackluster noncon isnt' a killer because a successful conference season offsets it. It is important to look good in any losses, though.

It's a growing process and a long season. The catch is to grow and not shrink.

Dayton is picked to win the A-10 and now I know why. They were one of the best teams I've seen play yet this year and their D on the ball pressure and defending passing lanes with quickness was lights out. Validated below with the NCAA D stats and prior to last night's game, Dayton was #6 team in the country and holding opponents to 55 ppg. IOWA scores 77 and should've/could've beat them.

Plus their O is pretty darn good too, good shooters again with quickness.

And if you've been watching as much Top 25 BB as I have, I question why folks can't see this how good a team Dayton is compared to other teams? If there are 16 teams better than the play last night, I just haven't seen it yet.

To answer the OPs question, heck yea they can.... Iowa is that good.

Not sure what yall have seen from the other big ten teams to think that we couldn't compete with them.

Amen yerp.....compared to last night's game, I've seen some putrid play of teams ranked much higher than Dayton and Iowa. Hat is off to Coach Miller and his Dayton Flyers and the Iowa Hawkeyes too.

There isn't a team like wisky last year that will just blow the Hawks off the floor.
I do think that msu, maryland, and purdue are the top tier with some separation.
After that, the Hawks should be competitive in the 4-7 range.
I'd be disappointed if they finished worse than 7th, but 5th or 6th should get them in the tourney.

At the level they're playing at right now, no. No post-season, other than the B1G tournament.

As they're playing now, no. We lack the presence in the paint to keep slashers out and lack foot speed from our guards to minimize dribble drive penetration. It looks like freaking lay up drill out there. Thank God we have some bigs coming in next years's class (Cook, Kreiner, Pemsl).

Still fairly certain this is a tourney team but they have to get the defense and rebounding figured out.

My prediction is not based on losing 3 games in 3 days in Florida.

And the way Iowa State played against Va Tech tonite-- they shot @ 70% tonite for 2/3 of the game including 3 Pointers -- We could lose by 20 points.

We need to beat Wichita State Sunday.

At best we are a bubble team. Been my position since day 1. Rebounding, young defenders, and an improved B1G.

Of course, it's always possible that they could improve over the course of the year, perhaps significantly. The flat spots they have displayed the last two games are correctable.

Yes, and of course barring key injuries. The last few games we've been playing our own little NCAA Tournament preview, we are 1-2 with one game where we blew a team out and two where we ended up in a competitive game after very poor starts.
