I agree Fran probably knows best, but he does have a track record of pulling freshman at any mistake. He did that to Oglesby his freshman year, but OGL lived through it and shot well his sophomore year and was forever in Fran's good graces. He did that to Olesani early in his career. He did it to Jok his freshman year (primarily for not playing defense) and even did it to Uhl a couple times last year. If I had to conclude, he probably gets his message to the young players with this quick benching but it appears to work out okay.
Unfortunately, Fran is not shy about doing this and will walk out to half court to meet a player if it occurs at a timeout. I'm not a big fan of showing the player up in that fashion though. Just hoping Williams is quick study and works just that much harder to prove it was a learning experience.
I would remind though, regarding the part in bold, that as a senior Oglesby never sniffed a starting spot. It was Gesell and Clemmons followed later by Gesell and Jok. Oglesby saw his minutes decrease as the season went on to what became the bare minimum as our fourth guard. The only way it could have gone lower is if we'd have played Dickerson more, which even that eventually wasn't an option when he announced his intent to transfer.
If one looks at minutes, several upper classmen or more experienced players have seen reduced minutes under Fran as the teams talent amongst youngsters increased. Who, for example, did White replace when he became a starter as a freshman?
As to how Fran treats his players, imo we're Iowans watching a guy from Philly behave like a guy from Philly which of course seems way out there compared to us expressionless, passive aggressive goofs. Fran's assertive. Nothing wrong with that. We have a rather impressive retention rate and hear comments from former players who loved playing for him all the time.
