Williams for Ellingson?

I agree Fran probably knows best, but he does have a track record of pulling freshman at any mistake. He did that to Oglesby his freshman year, but OGL lived through it and shot well his sophomore year and was forever in Fran's good graces. He did that to Olesani early in his career. He did it to Jok his freshman year (primarily for not playing defense) and even did it to Uhl a couple times last year. If I had to conclude, he probably gets his message to the young players with this quick benching but it appears to work out okay.
Unfortunately, Fran is not shy about doing this and will walk out to half court to meet a player if it occurs at a timeout. I'm not a big fan of showing the player up in that fashion though. Just hoping Williams is quick study and works just that much harder to prove it was a learning experience.

I would remind though, regarding the part in bold, that as a senior Oglesby never sniffed a starting spot. It was Gesell and Clemmons followed later by Gesell and Jok. Oglesby saw his minutes decrease as the season went on to what became the bare minimum as our fourth guard. The only way it could have gone lower is if we'd have played Dickerson more, which even that eventually wasn't an option when he announced his intent to transfer.

If one looks at minutes, several upper classmen or more experienced players have seen reduced minutes under Fran as the teams talent amongst youngsters increased. Who, for example, did White replace when he became a starter as a freshman?

As to how Fran treats his players, imo we're Iowans watching a guy from Philly behave like a guy from Philly which of course seems way out there compared to us expressionless, passive aggressive goofs. Fran's assertive. Nothing wrong with that. We have a rather impressive retention rate and hear comments from former players who loved playing for him all the time.

I am just speculating as to why Fran would get on him like that, nothing more noting less. Why do you think he got his ass handed to him by Fran???

Because he wasn't patient enough to let the play develop and confident enough to make the pass?

I did like his aggression in taking the open 3 when he had it and attacking the rim of the bounce. If Fran is getting on you, that's a good thing in the long run.

Williams is going to be an exceptional player down the road, just needs a little growing to get there. He is one of the most physically freakish players on the team IMO. Handles, height, crazy length, good hops and from all accounts a decent shot. Really excited to watch him grow with the program.

That is a great point, Fran usually gets on players he believes in and players he thinks can take the heat and get better from it....I guess that is what I was trying to get across....when Fran jumps a player it is warranted and players generally respond positively. I remember him getting on Jok early this year for his lack of effort on a D, since that time Jok is an above average defender as opposed to a liability

Flemming just has a spark I like. I think the reason he isn't seeing the floor is when he gets in he tries to do WAY to much. Like he needs to tell fran, when i am in, I will play defense, and nothing else, and when i get the ball, i will pass it immediately. lol. Just until he learns how to pick his spots better. I love his upside.

Of course it can be overdone, but a coach getting in a players ear sometimes is a good thing. Coaches don't have unlimited time and energy. They spend it on the guys they know are going to contribute.
Some guys need it more than others and good coaches know how to ration it in the right way for each individual player.

I agree the game appears to be moving fast for Ellingson right now. If he can hit a few shots that would give him some confidence and help slow the game down for him a bit. I'm not counting him out, but he needs to turn it around quickly if he expects to be a contributor this year.

Looks like Brady turned it around today! Some big shots from him and he finished with 8 points. Great contributions from the bench and excellent teamwork.

One of the best things he showed today was confidence. You could see by the way he was running off those screens that he was hunting his shot.

I was very pleased with Brady today. He played extremely well and was a great asset today. He will be terrific before he is through.

Brady, like CW and Andrew are stuck behind a three guard rotations that features about 150 career starts. There just aren't very many minutes at guard this season. Prior to today Brady hadn't really done anything to earn more time at the expense of one Mikey, AC or Peter nor anything to lose the time he got. The kid has a nose for the ball, like Baer. Beyond that its hard to know anything really long term about Brady.

I agree with whoever noted above that Brady seemed to be working harder to get open when he was in today. He was doing that against some of the most physical grabbing and pushing that he's going to see this season. That's a good sign because 80 minutes open up at guard.

Purdue had 3 starters and 2 bench players who all had more minutes than Brady Ellingson yet all scored less than 8 points yesterday.

I guess none of them are "D1 players" either, huh internet experts?? You guys should let Matt Painter know he is playing so many D2 guys that can't even keep up with our D2 guy.

IMO...
Every team needs glue guys & Ellingson is just that. Guys who give the starters a break --- who don't hurt you when they come in & then in some games have the impact Brady did...those 2 3's were great & being an outstanding shooter it was just a matter of him having the confidence.

OH he has struggled once he got into the B1G (everyone knows that... nothing brilliant there) ... and his minutes reflected...but Fran does a good job hanging with a player...which has a huge impact on recruits.

Brady may never be an All-B1G player but he certainly has the talent to contribute.

I noticed before his first 3 that his body language was completely different yesterday. It was as if a light went on for Brady. He was relaxed and played much faster while still being in control. Keep it up!

Another shooter emerges for Iowa that opponents have to account for. This team is a nightmare for opposing defenses

coming off the bench (cold) & playing in relatively short stints is not easy when one is a outside shooter...so it takes a player with a lot of confidence in his ability to knock down shot(s) & it maybe only "one" attempt before you get pulled.

Brady is in the game to spell Gesell/Clemmons & sometimes Jok. When a player in the role that Brady has this year...is struggling with his shot (playing in the B1G in his 1st go around will do that)..it is very easy to lose confidence in your shot. Knowing your teammates & coaches believe in you...goes a long way.
