I like to think i'm pretty informed and accurate about these things. I think i did a relatively strong job with the Class of 2016.

But I'll be the first to admit i don't have a good handle on the top uncommitted guys right now.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Iowa/M* land a couple big fish.

For me, i just don't know (at this time anyway) - who Iowa is crushing on and which kids are leaning where.

Iowa has a lot of committed recruits (and money) already out there. So I erred on the side of caution for all we discussed.

Just a question - why no Fix?

Willie had excellent points about Iowa and the question of IF we have enough funds for two more blue chippers. I also thought it was funny as hell when Willie was irritated with CP to start the show off. I wish these two could be in studio together and have a live feed going on flowrestling.com - come on CP move down south! Those guys together would be great to watch instead of just listening to. I do think (hope) that Iowa will land either Warner (1, due to a huge need) or Berge (1a) - BOTH WOULD BE AMAZING!

Lee, Mejia, Jrent, Troy, Stickley, Warner and Berge is a monster class. Everyone fits so well with the recruiting over the last couple of years.

Smalls do you think Iowa has ran too thin with their scholly$? Any different than PSU/Okie State/ASU/Minnesota?

Mark Perry was never going to anywhere except Okie State once upon a time. Strange things happen

true but....

there's no indication, and therefore nothing to really add.

is there a chance Daton doesn't go to OKST?

sure.

but there's no commentary or narrative or information that we could provide otherwise.

maybe we should force ourselves to...seriously...like 'how and why daton fix would go elsewhere'

could be interesting

no, i don't. you be aggressive as hell. M* is my guy, and he's doing it right.

this sounds a little convoluted....so convoluted i'm gonna sound silly, but....

this is what's gonna happen...

no matter what I think on an individual level, guys are gonna love Iowa and want to wrestle for them despite receiving 30% less scholly.

on a case-by-case level, i can't predict any of the above to go to Iowa...based on facts and info.

but in reality, someone/s will decommit because they don't get the money they want, and/or someone will take an offer from iowa b/c they're iowa. analytics don't measure fidelity or preference.

my money is on warner being a hawk.

Maybe a bit convoluted. Your money is on Warner being a Hawk and yet you chose him to commit to Illinois above??

Couple questions

I know I FRL you talked about looking up coaches salaries. Are you able to do the same thing for college student athletic scholarships to see what they are receiving?

Also say a athlete gets 50% athletic scholarship but he is also a good student. Can he get the other 50% from academic scholarship? Or if he is an excellent student can he get a full ride academic scholarship and not have it count towards the wrestling 9.9?

Thanks in advance.

If Purdue and Minny can sway Berge away from Iowa with scholarship money so be it. It will all be about individual titles for him at that point. Accomplishing his complete Championship goals would mean so much more as an Iowa Hawkeye. No comparison

Turk, I brought that up on FRL today...

every fan base says every recruit should go to their school to be part of a team national title. and if they don't, they are scared of competition or 'in it for themselves'.

That's selfish of you - as a fanbase.

Kids like what they like and will go where they want to go - despite your desire to have 'your team' win titles.

if Berge goes to Purdue (or anywhere else) that's his prerogative. if he goes to iowa, that's his prerogative too.

not every kid who didn't go to iowa had his priorities messed up.

I listened to FRL 30 today. This is Iowa, not Purdon't. If he goes to Purdue it's not to win a national Team Championship and that's OK. And yes indeed like I said, if that is his prerogative so be it. In my mind a talented kid like Berge sees the big picture, not just a few years down the road.

Olympic titles, World titles , Team titles, Individual titles sprout and grow like wildfire in Iowa City.

Not sure where anybody said a kids priorities are messed up if he isn't a Hawk. Stirring the pot a bit at the end there? Ha

Also another quick question while your here. What exactly is M* doing right? Obviously he is, I'm just curious to know what it is you have observed him doing well? Maybe something Iowa has been missing in the recent past with potential recruits?

Well, not really. Mark always marched to the beat of his own drummer, and when he left for Blair, it wasn't clear where he was headed. Fix has stayed in Oklahoma for his high school years. Sure, crazy things happen from time to time, but Mark Perry's situation was much, much different. I'd liken Fix's situation to Chris Perry's. No way Fix ends up anywhere but Okie State, IMO. I'd say he's about as likely to go elsewhere as Brandon Sorensen was. In other words, not at all likely.

Most expected Mark to still go to Okie State even when he left for Blair early on. He always blazed his own trail no doubt but it was still a shock for him to come to Iowa.

Some may have been shocked. I don't remember it being all that shocking, however. It seemed to me that he was going to make up his own mind, especially after he went out east. He wasn't your typical go-along kind of kid. We'll have to agree to disagree.

As for Fix, I'd say his situation clearly resembles' Chris' much more closely than Mark's. Now, if Fix went somewhere else, that would be shocking.

The rumor is kids take less money to attend PSU to work with Cael.

And the same for brands and co. That came through in this episode.

Like seeing M* getting props these days across the interwebs. Only six months ago the uninformed had him on the next train out of town.

Regardless of the fan base you root for I feel this all good for the health of the sport.

I know his relationship with this board has been lukewarm on the best of days, but I gotta give it to Smalls. As a fan he's obviously extremely passionate about our sport and as a journalist he writes well, works his @ss off and does impeccable research, Additionally, he's very accessible. He comes on this board a lot, will get in on discussions, is respectful and puts out worthwhile info. From where I'm sittin' this fence is mended. And it's all thanks to Spencer Lee and Gavin Teasdale. ;)

Not challenging Willie, as I'd defer to him on wrestling knowledge 7 out of 7 days, but I wouldn't put Purdue, nor Minnesota in Berge's top 2. If it isn't Iowa I'd prefer Purdue for him though. Great coach!

I thought I saw a tweet last week or so that CP was indeed moving to Austin.

Hmmm. . . . This is the first I've ever heard of this rumor of which you speak. What a novel concept! Of course, this principle would only apply in Happy Valley. One would never conceive of such a strategy being applied in, say Iowa City. . . over, say, the last four decades.

I think it is more common when dealing with in-state kids. Seems like it would be pretty difficult convincing an out-of-state blue chip to pay the lion's share of out-of-state tuition while passing up big offers elsewhere. Then again, 18 year olds have no concept of actually having to pay student loans, so who knows?

Well money just opened up with Mejia decommiting. That sucks!
Think it was lack of money offered to Mejia that made him decommit? I remember is dad on here at one time talking about offering all top kids 80%. I have to figure with Lee and Renteria also 80% wasn't offered to Mejia. This suck! Best wishes to Mejia. Whoever lands him will be getting a great wrestler and even better person.

No clue man. Just sucks to see him go. He seemed like a good kid who had all the desire to be a Hawkeye.

Very plausible. Interesting it happens a few days after July 1st. Maybe Fresno St. or another player was knocking on his door with a full ride. Still sucks either way.
