Willie/CP picks for top 10 recruits

Couple questions

I know I FRL you talked about looking up coaches salaries. Are you able to do the same thing for college student athletic scholarships to see what they are receiving?

Also say a athlete gets 50% athletic scholarship but he is also a good student. Can he get the other 50% from academic scholarship? Or if he is an excellent student can he get a full ride academic scholarship and not have it count towards the wrestling 9.9?

Thanks in advance.

I see he didn't address this. That is not public info.

no, i don't. you be aggressive as hell. M* is my guy, and he's doing it right.

this sounds a little convoluted....so convoluted i'm gonna sound silly, but....

this is what's gonna happen...

no matter what I think on an individual level, guys are gonna love Iowa and want to wrestle for them despite receiving 30% less scholly.

on a case-by-case level, i can't predict any of the above to go to Iowa...based on facts and info.

but in reality, someone/s will decommit because they don't get the money they want, and/or someone will take an offer from iowa b/c they're iowa. analytics don't measure fidelity or preference.

my money is on warner being a hawk.

Guess Willie nailed the decommits part!!!....Berge, Warner and Murin the money is there now.

Is Troy a projected 149/157 in college or a 157/165? If he's a 149, Berge could go 149 for 2 years, then when Kemerer graduates he moves up to 157 for his final 2 years and Troy slots in at 149 for his final 2. Like an Alex Meyer type of situation. But thats assuming he stays 149 for 5 years.

Troy's pretty short and squat. I don't know if frame to move up too far. But HS kids have been know to grow so there's that...

Question: if we land Berge, does Troy decomit? Berge is better head to head and gotta imagine Iowa gives Berge more money.
Not picking on you SoCal, this recruiting stuff is "tricky", but not everyone is destined for greatness. Troy COULD be the next "big thing" and Berge COULD be a total non-factor in DI College Wrestling for all we know. No one knows at this point. 5 years from now we'll have a pretty good idea - ;). It's all speculation and projection based on High School resume's and tournament showings, with the current Coaching and Training they're receiving (not to mention the cozy confines of Home and Mom's cooking!). That's all going to change. But "stuff" happens on the way to the bank, always has and always will.

Iowa still needs reserves, no matter who it is, just like everywhere else, and preferably not those eating up tons of scholarship money - Ha! (not referring to Troy specifically, or Berge, neither is guaranteed a thing in Iowa's lineup should they both come, and every kid in the country isn't getting a full ride to wrestle no matter how great they may be or their parents think they are).

I hate to keep getting all philosophical about this recruiting stuff, but Iowa Wrestling has had a plethora of High School stars who never set foot on the mat in Carver Hawkeye arena (it's a LONG list and Iowa doesn't hold the patent on it). They've come from all over the country too. Tons of them from Iowa. 3x & 4x State Champs are nothing to sneeze at, but that won't get you anything but perhaps a nice chocolate chip cookie in a DI Wrestling Room.

I guess my point is I hope that the kids that commit to Iowa Wrestling do so thinking they are "the man" from a competitive standpoint, and you come in and give your best effort and hope that's good enough, regardless of the stature of the guy on the other side of the circle. Sometimes it is, sometimes not. Welcome to the real world, it's tough out there.

Good luck with all that! :D

You've got too much "lineup thinking" time on your hand Lax! Ha!

I was mostly asking the question based on $$. This Mejia/ Renteria thing has made me start thinking a lot about scholly money. Im sure in order to land a recruit the caliber of a Berge, he's going to want a lot of money. He's good enough to get a full ride somewhere else if he doesn't get it here. That said, I know I'm speculating here but I have to imagine Iowa would offer Berge more $ than Troy. Troy could end in a similar situation as Mejia/ JRent. Less $, the prospect of being thousands of miles from home and the hard reality that you're going to have a hell of a time even cracking the lineup. Sigh, great now I'm depressed.....

Well my man, this has been happening since the 9.9 limit was put in place. This isn't Football or Basketball where you can commit at a young age and you're getting a full ride, so the money factor doesn't come into play for those sports (obviously there are walk-ons and greyshirts and things of that nature, but largely if you're a recruited DI athlete in those sports, you're getting a full ride). It's a hard enough process when you're getting a full ride and have many options on where you can go!

Everyone wants a deep bench for their respective teams, and nobody wants to pay more than they have to for their student/athlete to go to College. However, as long as the scholarship limits don't match the number of starters, it's always going to be an issue in Wrestling. People have hard choices to make, no doubt about it (be a great student, that will help).

You can win an individual National Title at a lot of places, that's been proven. It gets a little harder when you factor in Team Titles and fan support and such, that gets to a much smaller pool of schools. Some will certainly put a lot of thought into the educational aspect as well, which of course they should.

Anyway, this has been going on for quite some time, so nothing new to report. I'm an advocate for no teeth gnashing and angst relative to recruiting, and however it plays out is how it plays out.

We don't have to like it, but we do have to deal with it. Coaches, Athletes, Family, Fans. All of us.

(The only ones who can truly have it all are Paris Hilton and the Walton Family Walmart heirs. The rest of us have to suffer and deal with it as best we can. ;))

No comments from Willie today? Maybe he planned his well timed comments yesterday??

Wouldn't they have committed at the same time then?
I think Fix had already committed to Flo's commitment show. And, I was just guessing. And hoping.

And if I type commit and its associated variables one more time, I need to be committed, because I always have to go back and correct my spelling..

Gfeller was also committed to Flo's commitment show.

For a while there, I was wondering where sloehawk went. Looks like someone got the itch for a new screen name!

Good to have you back, pal. This board's not the same without you.

No shit. Edit: Wayment...23 so far, do you think freestyle results correlate to how good a college wrestler one is going to be?

Mark Hall is de committing from PSU to OSU, watch and see. As for Gfeller, have the low down but if I said a few coaches would be mad at me.
I talked to Hall. He told me that he is decommitting from PSU, but plans to go to Iowa.

There is no correlation whatsoever. Watch them throw darts, you'll get as much or more out of that as you will watching them wrestle Freestyle.
