Wirfs selected for Army All-American Game!

Congrats to Tristan. That is a big honor. He will join two other Hawkeye recruits - Eno Benjamin and AJ Epenesa - at the AAA Bowl.

2017 is shaping up to be a great class. Wirfs and Kallenberger - the next generation of Iowa OL standouts.

..... anyone know if Iowa has ever had as many as 3 commits play in this All-Star game?

..... also, his film shows him playing DL also. At 6ft5 and 315 now, I'm wondering if he might line up at DT alongside Epenesa some time in the future.

Yes, we had around 5 in the 2005 army all American game if memory serves correctly

Since 1985 an average of around 10 have been drafted? I assumed a lot more than that if you would have asked me. Congrats to wirf, A.J, and Eno!! Big honor watched the game a few times in my lifetime.

Wow, didn't realize Stross was in that game too, forgot about Blum, bummer back injury kept him from contributing.

I've watched his tape. I think you are looking at the kid like he is a finished product. A lot of these kids coming from small schools don't get the teaching to have great technique etc. They just rely on their size advantage. It should show you something that this is one of the first kids Iowa offered in the class.

Have you actually seen him play? And yes I have and will reserve judgement .
I talked to a friend of mine who lives in Mt. Vernon and has seen Tristan play and he had less than positive things to say about the level of Tristan's play. But college coaching from the likes of Iowa might bring out technique and abilities in Tristan he know doesn't he has.

Watching him in the dome last year....I agree with your analysis. A long ways to go. Ability? Sure.

Desire, motor and drive? I didn't see it. At all. Hope he figures it out

That's why he isn't a 4 star though.

This was exactly what you said when another poster said he was underrated.

You should send your resume into KF. That way we can get your approval on OL prospects. It would be much appreciated. We have struggled to put guys in the league at this position...
Nah I would much rather hear from someone like you and btw when you do watch him play please share your insight's with all.

Maybe some should go watch him this week. He's playing against Levi Duwa another Iowa recruit. I'll see him in 3 1/2 weeks when he plays in Mepo.

I prefer to just hear your analysis. You seem spot on. Can you at least give KF a call and tell him to pull Wirfs scholarship? I really don't want him if you don't approve. I would hate to see this staff waste it's time and with another crap OL prospect. Maybe you can give them some idea's on who you feel should get the offer.

“Wirfs is extremely explosive and I haven’t seen many guys with as high a motor as him, especially from a down defensive lineman. He’ll rush, then make a play across the field and he just doesn’t give up on plays. It’s fun to watch his effort and desire to get to the ball. Offensively, he’s obviously an exceptional blocker and they try to do a lot of things behind him. I’d love to coach him.” – Spirit Lake head coach

“Tristan went to the (Nike) Opening Regional in Chicago having not been to a ton of camps like that before and not really seen elite speed rushers,” Trieu said. “That was a situation he could have easily struggled in, but he didn’t and made the final five on the offensive line.

“That camp gave us a glimpse into what he can be. He’s not as raw as we thought he might be.” Allen Trieu -Scout recruiting analyst

"Unfortunately, I’m unable to watch all of Iowa’s recruits in person but I’m happy I’ve been able to see Wirfs grow as a player. This kid has a chance to be very special."

Wtf does Rob Howe know though. He has nothing on hawkssox.

You can have all the experience you want with something and still be horrible at it.
I've been right quite a bit. For a recent example, I called Boyle not making it at QB. (While in HS)

Also called AJ derby not being a qb.

When Iowa offered eno Benjamin I said it was one of the best highlight videos I had ever seen. Of course it's early.

Lots of other examples. I've been wrong too. I wasn't impressed with toks akinribades film. I could be wrong on him.

Bottom line with wirfs, other people saw it too. Again there's probably a reason he is not a 4-star. Could end up being good enough to have been a four-star? Absolutely

You related to the guy?

The people rating kids on 247 felt differently. And that is why he got into the Army All American game.
It certainly sounds like he has improved since last fall that's great sometimes it takes guys a while to figure it out. Maybe he has

Iowa has had several guys that played in that game that ended up doing very little but it's always a crapshoot with 18 year olds.

Tyler Blum and Trey Stross also played that year. There were 7 total.
Christensen
Bain
Moeaki
Doering
Richardson
All five from IL, what a haul that year!

Interesting that this class as a seniors went to the Orange Bowl but the high-school All Americans above, other than Moeaki, didn't live up to the hype.

I think JC was arguably the worst regular starting QB in the Ferentz era post-2000. I thought Bain transferred and Doering/Blum never really saw the field. Stross/Richardson were both solid contributors but not stars. Even Moeaki was dogged by injuries.

One thing I have consistently heard over years is that OL is the hardest position to scout / recruit. Very few people understand what to look for and even the experts can be wrong. I never believe anything I hear or read about an OL recruit. I just hope for the best. I tend trust this staff though.
