REPORT: Allegations have been made that a racial comment was used in front of Kobe King

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- According to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, University of Wisconsin officials are investigating an allegation that a racial slur was used in front of Kobe King.

"UW athletics administration was made aware of an allegation Sunday afternoon and has already taken measures to address it,” Wisconsin associate athletic director Justin Doherty said in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article. “Anytime we are made of an allegation of any kind, it is handled with the utmost seriousness.

"There is absolutely no place in UW athletics for the type of behavior being alleged.”

King announced he was transferring from Wisconsin on Jan. 29.

"After talking with my family and friends I have decided that the best step for my future basketball aspirations, as well as my love for the game, is to immediately step away from the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball program," King said via his Instagram account. "This has been a very tough decision for me…however, after spending almost three years in the Wisconsin program I have realized that this program is not the right fit for me as a player and person."

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article, King could use this such claim to be granted immediate eligibility when transferring.

Hey, it worked for Justin Fields. Use what you have available to attain your goals.

I'm calling BS. No one so thin skinned that they quit and drop out of school because they heard "a racial comment." What the hell does that even mean?
It's much easier to blame the culture at the university.

If the comment was made by an authority in the athletic department or, worse, the basketball team then he's got a damn good reason to transfer. This doesn't sound like a case where it was some student walking around the campus saying that. It sounds like the comment was made by a member of the athletic department that King has to deal with regularly.

“Oh no, I heard a naughty word! I need to get to my safe space right away because I don’t understand the concept of content.”
this might have been the straw that broke the camel's back

it appears he was tired of playing slow ball. and why be in a culture where your S&C coach is using inappropriate racial terms where you don't feel like you belong?

If a slur was directed at him, or used towards any person, in any manner, he is well within his rights to have a grievance. If it was used as part of a story about something someone else said, then I say no. That specific slur is not uncommon on playgrounds, or quite frankly rap music, so if it was used in the context of a story of what someone else said, then I say ridiculous. Pretty subjective and slippery slope here.

Who the hell wants to play for someone that doesn't respect them because of their skin color?
Get a clue man....

Exactly. And who knows how many times he heard shit like that? I don't get the sense that this was a one-time incident at all. And, hell, it's Wisconsin so I hope this destroys their whole basketball program ... and every other athletic program they have. **** Wisconsin!

You can't think of what "a racial comment" could be? I don't believe you.

True, but it wasn't said, to or about him, it was brought up in recalling a past story. I fully understand that I'm not a minority, so maybe I don't get IT, but sounds pretty thin skinned to me. Actually sounds like the kid was looking for an exit, and he found one......

Their strength coach resigned for using the n-word while repeating a story during his time in the NBA. Not sure if that’s it. I’d be curious to hear what he said. If he said, “... after he hit the game winning shot Mike came into the locker room and said ‘who’s yo n**** now?’ and everyone laughed. It was so funny.” I’d say 1) dumb story and 2) who cares if he said the n word in that context.

Do we know that for sure, that the "past story" story was the truth? I don't buy it. I mean, I have no idea, but I don't think a kid transfers over one comment ... but, like you said, he may have been looking for any excuse to get out of Madison--and, hey, who could blame him! It's forking Wisconsin! :D

This can't be the reason for King's departure,... sorry does not add up.

I'm calling clueless Iowa white guy post

Man, its like most of you guys live in a state that is 98% white and have an expert opinion on racial matters.

This is an odd take. Isn’t being white a racial demographic? Why does being white disqualify one from debating racial matters? Why are you dehumanizing white people and singling non whites out as different? I hope I am mistaken, but you sure seem to have some racist overtones to your logic.

Story from ESPN:

King had expressed concerns about S&C Coach Erik Helland's treatment of minority players within the program to those close to him, according to a source. Helland said in a statement that he'd never done anything to "intentionally insult or hurt" a player.
