Wisconsin vs. Iowa: the Badgers have a new offensive coaching staff for 2022

HB King
(Keller) Chryst is a graduate assistant who is in charge of working with the team’s quarterbacks this season, a role meant to supplement what first-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bobby Engram provides. Given how much the success of Wisconsin’s season hinges on improved quarterback play, Chryst has arguably one of the most important jobs on the team, even though he is essentially an intern mixing work with education. - The Athletic

Last year, Paul Chryst became Head Coach/Quarterbacks coach for Wisconsin. The offense had to flip strategies after a slow start last season.

This year, new offensive coordinator Bobby Engram is OC/QBs coach for Wisconsin.

This is an area that will be interesting to watch the Badgers development going into 2022.

Bobby Engram's Coaching Career
2011: Offensive Assistant, San Francisco 49ers
2012-13: Wide Receivers, Pittsburgh
2014-18: Wide Receivers, Baltimore Ravens
2019-21: Tight Ends, Baltimore Ravens
2022-present: Offensive Coordinator, Wisconsin

While Iowa has a first time quarterback coach in 2022, so does Wisconsin. And, first-time OC, as well.

The Badgers have a new OL coach for 2022, as their inside linebackers coach returns to his roots in the OL. He will also serve as running game coordinator.

Bob Bostad’s Coaching Career
1990-91: Offensive Line, UW-Stevens Point
1992-94: Graduate Assistant (Offensive Line), Minnesota
1995-96: Offensive Line, California State Northridge
1997: Offensive Line, San Jose State
1998: Co-Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line, San Jose State
1999-2005: Offensive Line, New Mexico
2006-07: Tight Ends, Wisconsin
2008-11: Offensive Line, Wisconsin
2012-13: Offensive Line, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2014-15: Offensive Line, Tennessee Titans
2016: Tight Ends/Fullbacks, Northern Illinois
2017-present: Inside Linebackers, Wisconsin

Bill Sheridan comes back to Big Ten as Wisconsin's new inside LB coach, after coaching defensive line at Air Force. Sheridan is no stranger to coaching linebackers, having coached them at Michigan from 2002-2004.

He was Boston College's LB coach in 2018, when Iowa played BC in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Back to Keller, he is Wisconsin HC Paul Chryst’s nephew and the son of Geep Chryst, who spent three decades as an NFL assistant and currently is the tight ends coach at Cal under former Badgers defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. Keller’s younger brother, Jackson, began his college career as a quarterback at Oregon State and has since transferred to Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Keller spent his first season as a graduate assistant at Wisconsin in 2021 working with the defense. Bobby Dunn, a former graduate assistant, helped Paul Chryst with the quarterbacks last season but accepted a job this offseason to become the quarterbacks coach at Division III Wisconsin-Platteville. That move allowed Keller to flip over to the offense at the position he knows so well.

Iowa has some changes on the coaching staff, but Wisconsin certainly had to mix up things, after offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Joe Rudolph moved on to Virginia Tech.

While Chryst moved his inside LB coach to offense, it was reported he wanted to keep the structure of the defensive staff in tack, so Sheridan was hired, who had worked previously with his new OL coach.

Chryst will not coach a position in 2022 it has been reported. Engram was on Chryst's early Pittsburgh's staff, as WR coach.

Chryst moved his ST coach to TE coach this off season, as well. Chris Haering replaces Mickey Turner, who becomes an in-house recruiting department role.

Al Johnson is new RB coach in 2022. Former Wisconsin GA in 2016-17, Johnson was a head coach at an Oklahoma D2 program the past four seasons. He is a former Wisconsin and NFL center, with 66 games of experience, 45 as a starter. He replaced Gary Brown, who left the program during last year's bowl prep, due to an illness. Sadly, he died in April.

Did Wisconsin hire a full-time special teams coach for 2022?

One article said the following, "I have no idea who is going to be on each unit this year for the Badgers. I do know they don’t really have a coach? But I’m not gonna pass judgment until I have an idea of what things look like in action so let’s just give some love to the specialists."

What the heck is going on in Madison for 2022?

It appear Haering will have a due role in 2022, as new TE coach and 8th year special teams coordinator for the Badgers.

On the flip side, Iowa hired a new TE coach in Abdul Hodge and elevated Brian Ferentz to OC/QBs coach, after Ken O'Keefe stepped back from a coaching role.

Neither Iowa or Wisconsin's offensive coordinator have ever coaches quartbacks. It will be the first season for Engram as an OC.

The two top dogs in the Big Ten West, Paul Chryst and Kirk Ferentz, like former NFL TE coaches as OCs and quarterback coaches for 2022.

2022 should be interesting in the Big Ten West, right?
