Wisconsin

Great team, missed free throws obviously co$t them the game... next year even with Hap back, they struggle mightily.. they won't sniff the NCAA tournament

I guess it's kind of ironic that missed FTs were their Achilles heal down the stretch and it's a MADE FT that ends up costing them the game. No way Florida gets off anything but a desperation from half court if he misses the 2nd.

Especially given how well Wisconsin rebounds their own missed FTs.

Teams need to stop picking up full court like that. The thinking is, of course, pick up full court so they have to burn clock dealing with your defense. But what does full court defense do in that situation? It gives the guard, usually the best with the ball, a super-spread floor and sort of eliminates decision-making. He basically is going to go for broke and with all that space, he just might get to the rim, or at least dribble to a spot for a relatively uncontested shot.

In that situation I am in a 1-2-2 soft press, almost daring the guy to make some longish pass, or dribble through the zone.

Great game, though. Crazy shot to send to OT, crazy shot to win. March Madness.

You could be correct, you could be wrong.
People said with our football schedule this past season, we might not make a Bowl but won the Division and the Cotton Bowl.
We need some guys to step up but they are there.
6'8 Aleem Ford redshirtted, he's a wing player, Brevin Pritzl who came off the broken foot this season and just played here and there is well regarded as is Trice.
Andy VanVliet is the wildcard, a.6'11 forward from Belgium who is great on the offensive end but needed muscle and better defense and could be a revelation next season.
Add three very talented freshman along with Iverson and the other upperclassmen and as usual, Badgers might surprise.
We find out about Gard REALLY next two seasons.

Couldn't agree more. The full court defense in the final seconds seems to be an epidemic sweeping across college bball. I've really noticed it in these tournament games. If there's only a few seconds left on the clock, the best possible defense you could give them is a pressure D so that the point guard can burn his man and create a 5 on 4 situation. Don't know why it keeps happening, but hey it's college bball coaches. They also refuse to ever go two for one so I guess I should expect things like this.

We say that year after year as they finish in at least the top for of the BIG and make a nice run in the ncaa's

Difference vs past is it has been Bo Ryan players and Happ is the last Bo Ryan Class. I would like to see their program descend into a heap of dog pooh but that level of insignificance is probably not going to happen.

This years team they are not super athletic yet play defense and rebound--I'd like Fran to pick up on that.

Wisconsin will make the NCAA's next year for sure and will finish in the Top 4 in the conference.

Its the end of a generation for Bucky. The B1G was young this season. I saw somewhere that that Iowa was the 4th youngest team in the country and the B1G had three other teams in that range of youth. I don't know how such conclusions are reached but if its close to right Bucky's new Badgers are going to have a learning curve they haven't had for a long time.

I continue to stubbornly predict the fall of the Badger. One of these times I'll be right.

2017/18 looks like a good chance for that to happen.

People have said "next year they won't go anywhere near the tournament" for how many years now?

They've been to 19 straight NCAA tourneys.

Until it actually happens, I won't bet against them.

Big difference is Bo Ryan coached for 17 of the 19 and his players were there for all of them. Gard is so similar to Prohm at ISU. Both walked into jobs loaded with juniors and seniors classes loaded with talent and both teams this year the seniors did bulk of the work. Normally I'd agree with Bo at the helm they'll reload some how and make their usual run. However even though he was one of his disciples we will see truly next year how good Gard is. Luckily for him unlike Prohm he still has one all conference guy left from his predecessor in Happ. We will see next year how good of coach Gard is with his guys.

Another thing working against Gard is lot of Big 10 teams just like Iowa return lot of the the bulk of their rosters next season. After Wisconsin Illinois probably losses most from their senior class. Minus swanigan be interested to see who else leaves early for pros.

It needs to be clarified that we were the 4th seed at the BTT last year and Wisconsin the 5. First time in 16 yrs or whatever they were not top 4.

They may make the NCAA, but they won't finish in the top 4 in the conference. It is not a birthright and they are losing too much.

The BTT seedings are not the same as conference standings. Last year Iowa, Wisconsin, Maryland and Purdue all finished in a tie for 3rd according to the Big Ten.

I see more women's teams going two-for-one than men's. Oregon men went two-for-one at the end of the half versus Kansas, and if memory is accurate, outscored KU 6-0 in last 45 seconds of the half.

Wisconsin understands who they are, they define roles, players accept their roles, they know their limitations and their strengths. Year in and year out they are very well coached and fundamentally sound, hard for me to bet against them being a good solid team again next year. You may not like em, but what they do year in and year out isn't a fluke.

If you've watched Wisconsin at all over the past decade+ (which you obviously haven't) , you've come to learn that Wisconsin will not only not struggle mightily, they will continue to be a factor in the Big 10 and NCAA tournament.

Wisconsin has two 4* players signed for next year (ranked #84 and #95 nationally).
Iowa has two ranked #112 and #117.

These guys have yet to step on the floor in Madison and we all know how to take player rankings, but to say Gard can only get it done with Bo Ryan's players is naive and short sighted.

Well so far he's only gotten it done with but Bo's players. But to play devils advocate if one sopinion is he won't get it done with his own is as equal to someone saying he can't. Seeing returning players besides Happ I'm not really sure who else you'd excited about. Trice? Iverson?

Ah, who do you think recruited "Bo's players" ?
This article by Jim Polzin in Madison.com does a decent job of looking toward next year.

Having Nigel Hayes pick up full court was pointless. Guy went around him like he wasn't there.

Iverson certainly flashed at points. Happ will cause trouble, but I don't know if that will be enough. There are a bunch of teams with a lot coming back.

Non starters who didn't see many minutes and freshman are generally inconsistant and normally take a while to learn to defend. They will likely beat some people they shouldn't and lose some they should win. Teams that lose 4 starters are unpredictable as we all know.

There was only one other year that I completely "missed" on the Badgers. I had no idea Frank Kaminsky would develop into the player he did. If they have another "Frank Kaminsky" I'll be wrong again in predicting they will not be to 4 in B1G. I'm predicting they will be slightly better than our Hawkeyes were this year so I'll say 5-7th place in B1G

that block by Barry near the end on full court pass was the key

I'll say. Iverson is their most explosive player on the team and Barry just kind of a "finesse" player. I've seen Iverson throw down dunks that would have sent Barry through the rim along with the ball. He got way too tentative going up.

This would be my guess today. The B1G looks very solid next year. Getting back to the NCAAs will be the goal.
Lots of young talent arriving in Madison, so the Badger's upcoming season might be similar to that of the Hawk's last year. Hopefully, several guys will emerge like the pleasant surprises that Iowa experienced.
Fortunately, Bucky is taking the boys down to New Zealand in September for some exhibition games which will give GG and staff the opportunity to try some different combinations.

I would tend to agree. Do they ever really fall off? Didn't they look horrible to start last year and still ended up impressing?
