With a healthy C.J. now...

This has been something I have talked with a few people about going into the season, and I'm no coach nor are they but just interesting to consider "how far do we push a healthy cj?"

We know he will tuck and run injured or not in dire situations...He has shown it. But as coaches do you incorporate more bootlegs or qb draws purposely coming out of the huddle or do you protect cj as much as possible and keep him as true of a pocket passer?

With GD having the past with likes of Vince Young, I can see more qb type devoted calls, maybe even some option? But I could see KF not letting this fly...

In the end, if we want such a season as last I'd say turn him loose as often as we can, and use him where it works.

I would definitely have a couple set run plays for CJ. You have to, to keep the defenses honest. CJ is quick enough to get it done. But only a handful of plays... If we are anything like last year, CJ will do plenty of running as it is.

I hope he takes off just as often, but I hope he learned how to give himself up and slide over the offseason. That will limit all the ridiculous hits he takes. I understand the excitement of helicoptering over the line, but it's just as effective to safely go out at the one and let L. Daniels punch it in.

I'll take this in a slightly different direction:

I don't wish for CJ to be changing his style nor for the coaches to change the plays much to put him in designed run situations.

What I do want to see - piss pound the teams Iowa should piss pound. Get up 35-3 at halftime. Then let somebody else play the whole second half.

CJ got hurt last year in the Pitt game i believe on a sack right? That is why improved pass protection is a must. He also has to learn when to get down and how to avoid some hits. But you have to let him do what he does best otherwise the offense will suffer.

He has to be able to run and get out of the pocket to be effective.
The loss of a roll out option definitely hampered the offense at times.
But, more importantly, pass protection at the tackles has to be better.

This.

Depends how the OL develops, and how healthy it stays. I think I'd not call very many plays that give him a run option, but let him improvise the run when necessary.

I am in favor of killing teams and getting wiegers some snaps though...

In a perfect world, this would be great, but outside of one or two games, most won't be 35-3 at the half, especially in the Big Ten.

Ok, it doesn't have to be 35-3, but you get the idea. In the middle of the third quarter, if Iowa is up by 21+, I should think CJ can go make smoke signals on the sideline to whoever KF & Co wish to insert at QB. Then I want to see this person actually run the offense, and not just hand off to Daniels/Wadley/Mitchell.

CJ got crushed in the Pitt game. Im remembering one shot he took from a guy coming right up the gut who put his helmet right into CJs chin. That was a vicious game of hitting.
