Women's Big Ten Tourney

I attended both games today. Mostly good experience, lots of Iowa fans everywhere. Lots of Iowa fans in their seats for the entirety of the first game too. They did give me my free ticket with my Iowa student ID, even though I’m a 40-something graduate student. I was a bit surprised I didn’t get pushback on that. I had to pay $30 for my son’s ticket. $20 for the ticket plus $10 for the fees. Still better than online.

They didn’t have the upper deck open but I don’t think they’ll need to. Indiana had the 2nd most fans in attendance and they mostly won’t be there tomorrow although there was a decent contingent that stayed for some or all of our game so I have to give them credit. Some OSU fans but they will be easily drowned out tomorrow.

If you’re going for the first time tomorrow be prepared, much of the food was probably the worst I’ve ever had at a sporting event and that includes high school games. Overcooked and dry cheeseburger with average fries. Cheese curds that were so over cooked the cheese had completely melted out of the breading for most of them. The pretzel place was decent though and they have a $25 giant pretzel with cheese that might actually be worth the price if you have a group of 4 or more. N/A drinks were pretty limited. Pretty much only bottles of Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, and water. And they don’t let you keep the cap for the bottle when they give it to you, so you run the risk of spilling when walking back to your seats with it. There was one place with a Soda fountain with a few more options. We found a smoothie place that was decent, albeit overpriced. Target Center could be a lot better.

Are the new owners of the Timberwolves right when they say they need a brand new arena?

From a fan perspective of someone sitting in regular seats, no. The arena is fine. Seats are comfy enough and have enough space, sight lines are mostly good, and the Jumbotron over center court is pretty good. The big thing is they need new food vendors. But otherwise our experience was fine. Not a long wait for the bathrooms. Not a long wait for any food place, not a long wait at the ticket counter, and security went quick since we didn’t have bags. Being right on the skyway and right next to the commuter parking garages is very nice too, especially since I just hop on I-394 to head west to get back home.

But, I have no idea how good the suites are or the amenities for the teams and other behind the scenes things. I can say that I’ve been to games in suites at Target Field in 2011, Xcel Energy Center in 2011, and US Bank Stadium in 2022. Xcel’s suites were way behind the other two, like distantly behind. I would assume that Target Center is similar since they were built around the same time frame.

Frankly it is ridiculous that the Twin Cities has two separate big league arenas. Should have had one for the Wolves and Wild, and then maybe a 12k seat arena for other events down in Bloomington. Whatever happens, the taxpayers better not pay for a new arena. I think if the Wolves left town most people wouldn’t care much. It’s not like it’d be the Lakers or Stars leaving town.

I agree that it was ridiculous to have separate arenas for the NBA and NHL team. Target Center was built to accommodate both. The problem? When the Wild owners got the new franchise, they did not like that a lot of the arena revenues were already accounted for by the Wolves. So, they wanted their own arena, where they got all the revenue.

For any new arenas or stadiums, they should look at what the city of Minneapolis and the state of MN did for the Vikings stadium (electronic pull tabs). Those pull tabs brought in way more revenue than budgeted and they will pay off their debt way early.

Target Center is in such a good location, too. Right across the street from Target Field, on the light rail line, connected to a hotel, etc.

Yes, or figure out a way to share the X
