Worst singer of an otherwise good or popular band

Sometimes popular singers aren’t necessarily gifted singers, they simply stay in their lane and they can sell records.

Sting
Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips)
Joe Strummer (The Clash)
Mark Knopfler (good guitarist, not gifted with a tremendous set of pipes)

My favorite band is Milton Brown and the Brownies, they were rivals of Bob Wills Texas Playboys back in the 1930s. But I can think of 200 singers who’s singing voice I prefer over Milton’s.

Put together the most talented singers/ musicians and it’s not guaranteed they make great music. And a group of no-talent amateurs can stumble across sheer music magic.

Man, I guess this is the American Idol generation. If only all those rock bands had lead singers with pure and perfect voices!

It’s Axl Rose for me, great songwriter, horrible vocalist and a big old douche to boot. I honestly enjoy Geddy Lee, but I understand why others feel differently about that.

Wondering now which rock vocalist I find most impressive. If pressed I’d go with either Jim Morrison (amazing vocal tone and fullness) or Steve Perry from Journey (amazing range and strength) although I’m not a great fan of their music. Tip of the hat to Annie Lennox as well.

Those are horrible choices.

Ian Gillan FTW!

Freddy Mercury is right up there, too.

I'll add a weird one. I absolutely love the first 2 Iron Maiden albums. Never get tired of them. That version of the band has every thing I love.

Bruce Dickenson is a better singer. But I don't like it at all. It's too operatic and heavy metal cliche for my taste.

You do realize most of us posting about this are old enough to remember these bands first coming up. I had already graduated from HS when GNR released Appetite for Destruction.

People change

David Lee Roth
Nah, Dave was good enough for what he was asked to do on the first four albums. A bit gravelly for sure, but his voice fit with the music perfectly. He could carry a tune, he just didn't have any range.

I read OP as singers who just sounded out of place when you first heard them:
Robert Plant, Dylan, Getty Lee, Joe Cocker, even Stevie Nicks.

My 7th grade music teacher was trying to teach us about pure vocal talent versus style, emotion, marketing, and other non-tangibles.

Out of all the examples he could have used----- Kenny Rogers, lol.

Wait…you believe Plant was a bad singer in Led Zeppelin?

I've always liked Megadeth but Mustaine's voice is a joke.. jmo

Another vote for Anthrax as well..

Joe Bonomassa is a prodigious guitar player, but I find his vocals weak.

Personally, I don’t care if a lead singer has vocal range or any of that fancy crap. I want something unique but not off-putting, a voice with emotion but not emo, and one that compliments the sound of the band. None of my favorite male rock vocalists are great “singers” per se. They just bring across the message in a powerful way. Cobain, Lydon, D Boon. Hell, D Boon might be the worst singer to ever carve out a decent living in American music. But he sang with conviction. The song Corona is perfect example of this.
