Would Iowa be 7-4 right now if Stratton had been allowed to win the job in August

Something else I noticed when re-watching the game.

In the 2nd quarter Shulte gets an interception and Iowa has the ball near the red zone. KF can taste the upcoming end zone dance, which will put Iowa up 10 points. With that kind of insane lead Kirk can go into turtle mode and ride out the clock. Nothin sexier than 50 off-tackle plays for 3 quarters.
But that doesn't happen.
Cade throws a pick-6 and now NW is up 7-3. There is nothing Kirk hates more than turnovers. Especially when gifted the ball in prime territory and then turning the gift into a curse. Then he does something that is very very very rare for him. He benches Cade in favor of Sullivan. Now of course he lies about it and says it's because of an injury. That lie should tell you how hard it was for him to replace Cade. I have never seen him punish one of his teacher's pets before, and that also tells you something. It tells you he is aware of his epic fail in a season with an easy schedule. In fact he won't see a schedule this easy for the remainder of his career, and he knows it.
So now Kirk is gonna give Sullivan the chance in late October that he should've given him in August. At first Sully looks shaky. But by the end of the game it is clear which QB produces wins and which QB produces maybes.
Kirk's enormous ego is a little damaged so he tells the media: (paraphrasing) "It's not like I made Sullivan permanent QB. That is reserved for guys who I acquire thru cheating".
And that my friends is another reminder, that KF is morally no better or worse than any other P4 coach.

We beat ISU for sure. MSU looked more like a case of a team coming out completely flat. Who knows what effect a different QB might have had on that. Less embarrassment at tOSU? A better bounce back? Hard to say.

Let's say that is true for a second.
What would cause a team to go flat??
Well when I played football nothing was more deflating than the players knowing the coach wasn't giving us our best chance to win because he wasn't putting the best players into the starting line-up.
So, by your own admission Iowa goes into the MSU game undefeated.
That's some pretty awesome mojo. And I bet they ride that mojo to a victory that day.

Iowa state gets beat down in the first half and quits like they were begging to do

Osu still a loss prob cause the refs have been just ridiculous in Columbus this year (see Nebraska today)

MSU a toss up, hard place to win…but definitely would’ve been better than the shit show we saw last week and no way the defense gives up that many yards, look how excited the defense is now
I'm glad you mentioned O$U and Braska.
That game showed that the Buckeyes are mortal this season.
We might have won that game. Instead of us looking up to the undefeated Cyclones, they would be looking up to the undefeated Hawkeyes, the way God intended.

Who the heck knows. Fun to speculate because there is no right or wrong answer. Now, I am engaged in them finishing 9-3 (10-3 after a win in the Also-Ran Bowl sponsored by Avis).

At worst we are 5-2 ... probably 6-1.

Well said… agree

And while still a loss vs osu it would have been competitive, at least to help manage our eye ball perception.

7-1. Even 6-2 and we have a sniff at CFP
Not so fast...an undefeated Indiana and isu are off the top 12 on some projections...a 2 loss iowa would've had a lot of room to make up still imo. Hell a 1 loss iowa probably isn't in top 12 right now.

Think about this. Not one single person in this thread even mentioned the possibility of a WORSE record. Tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the likelihood of having a better one.

Yeah, I'm not sold on Iowa beating Sparty given the D we packed that night. However, a few more offensive points + TOP advantage and maybe resting the D would've helped. That game is a push, we still lose OSU game but as mentioned we beat ISU by 10+ IMO with Sully.

Uh, No. They lost to Ohio State two weeks earlier. But to your point...the Cade fatigue has to wear on a team.

Iowa has done this in all 5 wins so far this year. Look bad offensively the first half, come out much better offensively the 2nd half. You can even say that happened in the MSU game too.

I do believe Cade needed to be pulled. I'm just not sold on this change necessarily solving all Iowa's offensive issues. And it damn well doesn't guarantee Iowa's record would be any different than 4-3 in the prior 7 games. Those 7 games are over. Not one single human being can change that. A different QB only guarantees those games would have played out differently, but different doesn't guarantee any more wins.

The change has been made, time to move on. Hopefully in the remaining games Iowa is more consistent offensively - but this change doesn't necessarily guarantee that happening. Remember when Padilla came in for some games a few years ago? Everybody swore, gonna be better offensively because he's more mobile.

Didn't exactly work out that way, did it?
How do you like your crow served ?

We easily beat ISU, probably lose to OSU, but we were within 5 pts of MSU twice after playing a crap first half on offense.

so the hawks would be 6-1 or 5-2 and I say 6-1 with an offense that scores twice in the first half
I might have to take you off ignore

Okay, so they go into that game with 1 loss. But that isn't even a guarantee. We beat O$U in 2017 with Brain for god's sake. Either way, my point stands. MSU (yes 4-5, 2-4 MSU who just gave up 47 points to a perennial door mat) is a win with Sullivan and a team not deflated by their HC.

and now ...

If only winning was as important to Kirk as it is his players, what a coincidence the defense looked completely disengaged and finished with this sh*t during the MSU game and has been playing lights out since Sullivan started.

If only Kirk was “as invested” as the players and not completely stubborn, the players would be playing far more meaningful games right now, instead a chunk of them are going to being opting out of a meaningless bowl game. Shame on pure stubbornness.
I bet you no longer think it is a toss-up. And let's not do the ref conspiracy thing when talking about other teams. It's beneath classy guys like us.

Is there a worse talent evaluator for the QB position than Ferentz? I really don't think so. 4th time this has happened in the ferentz era. McCann over Banks, Joke Christiansen over Stanzi, Rudock over Beathard, and now Cade and Sully. If he says anything but "Sully's our guy going forward" he needs to be checked in to the nearest mental hospital.

Don’t forget KF not even considering Labas over Hill. You can’t make this crap up with KF and his offensive illiteracy.

He passed for 93 yards.

You might want to pump the brakes a little.

All questions will be answered next year when he is the starter.

Can he pass Iowa to a victory when the opponent shuts down the run? Don’t know yet.

We obviously still lose to OSU with Sullivan. Cade single handily lost us the ISU game, so that would be a definite win with Sully. MSU who knows.

Well so far, he has said anything other than that.

This is an overhyped thought.

Brad Banks came out of nowhere, probably needed to learn for a year before being a B10 QB.

Christensen was a highly touted recruit, and helped recruit other good recruits to come to Iowa. You give that guy plenty of chances, as long as he isn't running amok off the field.

Rudock was not bad. Had a year more in the program than CJB. Rudock was 22nd qb in his hs class, CJB, 38th. Rudock came from an excellent HS program. Beathard played at a HS in the Nashville area that wasn't exactly top level.

If Sullivan could not keep his own job at Northwestern, why are we all so f'n sure he should have been qb1 here (except for some or many of the coaches that actually get to watch practices).

I am glad we are not a program that plays QB roulette. Because sometimes, that blows up on you.

Labas did not really have a great game in that bowl in Nashville.

At CMU, Labas has thrown for 1100 yards, 7 TDs, 7 picks. And, they are 3-5. Not exactly Chuck Long redux.

We shall see but he looked pretty good on the few throws he did make. And his running ability is a game changer.

TBF, our rushing attack was absolute dogshit in that bowl game. Labas didn’t have great numbers (not many do at Iowa playing QB especially under BF) but thought he looked good overall - about 60% completion, no turnovers, positive rushing yards and looked both mobile and pretty good arm.

We were especially cautious given how dominant our defense was playing.
