Would you support an NIL tax on Sports Betting in Iowa?

Absolutely. I don't bet, so sure. It makes sense. It would be a self-imposed tax. You don't wanna pay it, don't bet, which would also be a good thing to do since I don't believe any individual, city, state, or nation has ever gambled itself to prosperity. If it worked like that, we'd all be rich.

Does any state that borders Iowa have legal sports gambling?

An example: I have head of people in the Quad Cities crossing the bridge from Illinois to Iowa, where they place their bet thru the app on their phone and then head back to Illinois.
Illinois is legal now. Kansas is not a bordering state, but is close enough in the southwest part of the state, and they are legal as well.

Lulz at Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Kinda surprised about the Dakotas, though.

Absolutely not! I spend my discretionary monies where I see fit. My choice.
If someone wants to donate to Flight Swarm Whatever, that's absolutely fine by me, but that is THEIR choice.

No I would not endorse, want or vote for anything like this. What does one have to do with another? And that is a rhetorical question for me. Betting is about people taking a chance on some outcome.

But NIL is for an individual making money on their NIL. The two are totally not connected. But Louisana isn SEC land and they want to beat Bama and Georgia so they will do everything they can to do it.

And if taxes are added in and the price of betting goes up the betting companies will jack up some other costs to make more money.

A lot of people will lose there houses on this one.

I don't gamble, so .... whatever.

But where does it stop? Athletic programs were apparently making too much money so it had to be shared with the players. Now a state is going to tax one entertainment opportunity to aupport another one. People in Louisiana will be paying a tax to help pay players that are making more than they do.

But that won't be enough to pay our poor disadvantaged slaves, I mean players. So, maybe a 1 cent gas tax to support athletic programs?

Out of control.

To the degree that this would be better than regularly hitting up fans for straight donations, I could live with this. Plus, I don’t gamble, so I’m always cool with taxes that other people would have to pay.

On the other hand, it would be yet another example of the insanity that has accompanied NIL at every step of the way. What started as a legitimate argument that players should get a share of the revenues they are helping generate has turned into a quest to find more and more revenue sources, as those previously profiting from college sports are unwilling to share their wealth.

How about instead, we create a tax on sports betting, and then use the proceeds to create better opportunities for kids who aren’t already going to college for free?

Thank you. Outstanding post...... A pox on ALL their houses, greedy bastards all.

"No, sports betting is not currently legal in Missouri. However, it has been legalized, and sportsbooks are expected to launch on December 1, 2025"

That's good to know............🙃
I guess I should have said it HAS been legalized, a step that they had basically no choice in taking with it legal in Kansas AND Illinois, and those two crossover states butting up against Missouri's two largest cities in St Louis and KC.

Those kids are making their "owners" billions of dollars.
None of my taxes are funding Iowa’s athletic department. They are self funded.

They can do the same with NIL. They already cranked ticket prices up. Which is fine I can pay or not pay.

I would like to see a politician say we need more taxes so these kids can drive nice cars to practice.

I have seen Iowa State basketball players tear out of their practice facility in very expensive cars. Really puts it all in perspective.

NIL was suppose to be for companies using the players in commercials. At the very least personal contributions should be from people with generational wealth. Not from people with a mortgage and their own retirement and kid’s education to plan for.

Any tax in Iowa or on sports gambling is not my problem, so I'm all for it. :)

In all seriousness, I don't agree with it. NIL $ should come from the University and those who directly support it financially (Swarm/Flight). Forcing people to contribute to NIL is absolute, total bullsh*t.

Have been charging seat premiums for a long time. Some threw tantrums and left their seats, but the stadium is still full.

I don’t understand this response. I don’t deny anything you said, It just seems like a non sequitur to what I posted. What do seat premiums of season ticket holders have to do with forcing Iowans to pay for Iowa’s NIL?

I would also tax all bottled water sales across the state and use the money for Waukee to have a bigger Jumbotron at their high school field.

Same thing. Forced tax and give the money to organizations already bursting at the seams with cash.

It's just flat out ridiculous when you think about it.

Since it's all PRO sports now... The New Orleans Saints and Pelicans should be demanding some sports gambling tax funds too, RIGHT?!?

Those poor franchise owners need that money to pay their players, otherwise they'll have a bad team.

What a crock of sh*t

as the deaf, dumb kid playing bingo, winning bingo and yelling bingo would say:

mingo!

this is the whole crux of the problem. the ones making the money off the kids should be paying the kids. not us, ever.
