Xavier/Solon Game

3 turnovers and a punt returned for a TD...can't do that vs a very good Xavier team..thought it would be a close game also

At the half, Cedar Rapids Xavier leads Solon 35-0.. Thought it would be a much closer game...

I hate to be “that guy” but the solon kid coming to iowa is a long way from contributing at the big 10 level.
I was at the semis last night and he did very little and wasnt even being doubled by crx.
Im not sure the kid would start for WDDowling.

We’ll see. People were saying the same thing about Wirfs, now he’s starting as a true freshman. Don’t see that happening too often, but just shows you what can happen.

I don't remember anyone saying that about Wirfs after wrestling,Drake throwing, state fball, etc. He really proved himself at the AA all star game.
I got a feeling the kid from Solon will be embarrassed at the AA game.
Just sayin.

He’s a talented kid. Needs to get his pad level down, which he will at Iowa. Xavier’s a program that will expose you in the trenches if you’re not sound fundamentally.

Back when Blythe was a prep for Williamsburg, many fans would report that he wasn't dominating play like they would have expected either. Turns out the Iowa coaches developed him into one heck of a fine center!

In the high school game, often players know some technique ... but often they're banking on their effort level and their raw talent. The Iowa coaches, when evaluating guys, they know that they can teach kids the fundamentals ... thus, they're looking to make sure that they see all the base essentials that they can use to shape into a high-level player.

I think Epenesa hit the nail on the head ... my vibe is that Linderbaum has the talent ... but guys with better technique were able to neutralize him. At Iowa, he'll be taught the technique ... so no worries.

No one will admit saying that about Wirfs, now that he's starting!!!

Linderbaum will shine at the AA game. Everyone that I have talked to says that he is a beast. Same people that told me a few years back that Josey Jewell was a “badass.”

So you're saying a kid who just got handled by CRX will shine at the AA game.
Got it.
Makes sense.

He plays down to the level of his competition.
He'll fit right in.

I guess that I trust the people who pick the kids for the AA game and evaluate athletes for a living a bit more than some guy who enjoys degrading a high school kid. I do not know you. The people that I do know say that he is a stud. I will just go with that. Understand? Got it?

Have you ever had a bad game in your life?

I'll say one thing about Linderbaum...... He has the frame to easily add 50 pounds of muscle. A year in the Strength and Conditioning department at Iowa will pay dividends...

I don't remember the poster, but he said multiple times that he believed Wirfs wasn't very good and looked meh at the hs level.

Linderbaum strikes me more as the sort of guy whose target weight will be around 290. One of his bigger attributes is his athleticism and his quickness. I don't think that Doyle will trade that off for bulk.

In contrast, if you look at Shannon ... he's a young man who already has "size" ... and a bigger element of his game is power, leverage, and violence at the point-of-attack. A somewhat different skill-set ... no more and no less valuable ... just different. I think that they offer great contrasts to each other.

Nixon, on the other hand, is a bit of a freak in terms of the combo of size and athleticism. He's a guy who will probably comfortably sit at 305 to 310 ... and still manage to run down some guys.

Well, when he wasn't cut block by the center he was held by 73. Otherwise he stuffed the middle runs. Xavier's splits were overlapping so anything up the gut wasn't going to work, Stovie and Schulte would just slide down the line and pick an off tackle hole or bounce to the outside, inside where he plays got next to nothing...

Of course I am sure you know better than the Iowa coaches and the Army All-American selection team...

Hope the kid from CRX that got knocked out on the opening kickoff is okay.

I remember the poster but won't say who but he even said he talk to someone that knew a staff member and they said they might of made a mistake on Wirfs I just remember thinking WTF
Yes that was it! Wirfs sure has come out strong and has so much potential for the future. Very exciting stuff.

Scherff and Ballard were both pegged as being “soft” in high school by posters on this board. Hell, it may have been true, but didn’t show up at Iowa.

If you had shown up from Mars on Saturday, and asked who the best team in the nation is, you’d have bet your spaceship that it was Iowa.

A bit off topic, but IC West is playing Bettendorf on Mediacom channel 127 at 4:00. Dillon Doyle and Cole Mabry(2019) are linebackers for West that Iowa has a verbal and interest in. Isn’t there a WR from Bettendorf that they like? It seems I read somewhere that there is.

You cant' tell what a HS kid will do in college by watching one game. I can remember years ago a basketball player that was said to be a great prospect was going to play a game against East Moline. I went to the game to see what he looked like. I sure wasn't impressed because the person he guarded scored 25 points and this person turned the ball over consistently while he scored 12. His name was Doc Rivers.

More like 2A.
Should penalize the public schools for all the free ride schlorships they give to players.
Do private schools have to accept everyone that applies to their school (or lives in the private schools district)?

Well they were until 2013 I think, then "decided" to drop a class. IMHO - yes, they should be.

They didn't decide anything.
Class is decided by enrollment but for football it was determined by conference until a couple years ago..

Classes have been around since the dawn of time in Iowa. Xavier chose (just like Assumption and Heelan) to play in 4A "conferences" until (for CRX and DA) just the past 5 years. They chose to play at the highest level for years, why all of a sudden do they use their enrollment?

Josh Volk - sophmore 6'4 285lbs. CRX has I beleive around 80 kids on their varsity team. I don't know of another 3A team like that without pulling up their entire JV\Fresh team.
They must recruit, right? All the private schools out here in southern California have the best sports teams because they scout and offer schollies to all the best players at the public schools.

What a stupid thread; bashing a high school kid, as some posters acting like they're recruiting gurus and d-1 coaches.

IMHO, give it a rest and lay off this kind of crap about HS players.

Reading is hard huh?
Don't even try math.
Iowa used enrollment for all sports but had a qualifier for football until a couple years ago. The qualifier for fball was if you played in a conference full of 4A teams (in fball only) you played $A come playoff time. Thus Whalert and CRX in the MVC and Dav Assumption in the MAC played 4A football but all other sports depending on enrollment.
That changed about 3 years ago when fball also went to enrollment.
Again - the schools didn't choose anything - it was the fricking rule.

So they were forced to play in those conferences? They didn't choose to play in those conferences?

No ...but absent a character issue I can't see why they wouldn't (so long as they are academically qualified). Most catholic schools are constantly scraping for enrollment....... which is why I always chuckle when someone complains about a private school "recruiting" certain players. Of course they do. Private schools would slowly wither and face financial hardship without strong recruiting efforts -athletes and non-athletes alike. I don't get why people don't understand this basic fact.

I am sure they do (as do all schools it seems) - their basketball players came out in the local paper saying they "opted" to go there for bball.

Exactly - public schools HAVE to take the kids within their district, trouble or not, special ed or not, etc. That in and of itself lends to an inherit advantage for private school.

And where did I say recruit in my statement you responded to?
