Funny you should ask this...this week I've been working on a project, capturing old Hawkeyes games from Youtube. It all arose because Fox threw down the HDCP gauntlet on my home recording last weekend. My capture card was sent HDCP because while I use component video connections to record, I forgot to unplug the HDMI...my DTV box sensed this, and blocked the signal because I was using a second output to view the game.
Bastards...that was why HDMI was invented, for copyright protection. Fox added the HDCP, DTV passed it through. Usually it happens to channels like HBO, but Fox apparently does it too for college football, NFL etc.
I record all Hawk football games, running my DTV receiver into a PC with an HD capture card. I then edit out all commercials, and archive them. I have most every game since 2009 in perfect 1080i HD. I also record older games...my collection is roughly 75 games prior to the 2009 season, going back to the 50's in a few cases.
I like to re-watch games when nothing else is on TV is why I do it, and DVR's are a ripoff at $10/month rental.
Anyway, I was forced to scrounge for a full copy of Minnesota cause of the recording snafu last Saturday. I found it on the B102go site and used a capture program to record it...not perfect, but I had no choice cause there wasn't anything on Youtube.
Here's the thing with Youtube. If you post copyrighted material...and a football broadcast certainly is exactly that, channels such as Fox, ESPN, etc...probably aren't going to like that. For example, the copy of the 1983 Gator Bowl was taken down by Youtube because the NFL objected. My guess is they objected cause it was a game at a current NFL stadium, or used some sort of NFL highlight/logo etc in the broadcast.
The newer the game, the tougher it is to find on YT. You need a guy (like me) who can capture the game, edit it down, and post it there to view it there.
There aren't many of us guys out there really, and very few Hawk fans apparently do it. Older games, most copies are from VCR that have been transferred to DVD and then captured on a PC. I discovered this all this week, and have captured a good 20+ games from the past this week, mostly the Chuck Long through Chuck Hartlieb years. Filling in the gaps mostly, non high profile games from those years.
I also like to record KCRG 9.2 Hawkeye Classics on Saturday mornings...today I believe it is the OSU-IA game from 1956. I get most the higher profile games from there. The broadcast is standard def 4x3, but usually pretty good quality.
But current games, you're most likely stuck relying on grabbing it from the B10 site, ESPN, or Fox (who I believe just let's the B10N handle it). I checked YT, didn't see a full game 2017 Iowa recording out there.
