A Los Angeles-area resident accused California’s “liberal political leadership” of playing “Russian roulette” with people’s lives Thursday, citing a failure to prepare for wildfires.

Several ongoing wildfires have rapidly spread across the Los Angeles area, Pasadena and other localities, destroying thousands of buildings and leaving at least five people dead. Attorney and California resident Brian Claypool told Fox News host Harris Faulkner he felt “heartbroken and outraged” after a press conference by local leaders.

“I have to tell you, after seeing that press conference, I am flat out heartbroken and outraged. We are sick and tired in L.A. County of having liberal political leadership play Russian roulette with all of our lives,” Claypool said. “Look at that. Look at these images. This was preventable, Harris, I’m not saying it could have been stopped, but I — I looked on the news three days ago. I have a teenage daughter. You know, I’m a single parent. I’ve got a 9-month old as well with a nanny holed up in a hotel. Three days ago, we see on the news there are winds expected of 80 to 100 miles an hour, Harris. I looked at my teenage daughter and I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ That’s hurricane force — hurricane force winds.”

The city cut the LAFD’s budget by almost $20 million last year, with the bulk of the cuts hitting the department’s operational supplies. Los Angeles officials have come under fire over the Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LAFD) pursuit of a “racial equity plan” under Chief Kristin Crowley, whose biography touts her as “the first female and LGBTQ Fire Chief” in the agency’s history.

The Los Angeles Fire Department also donated “surplus equipment and gear” to Ukraine in 2022, according to a press release from the department.

“What is our city, what is our county doing to try to help people understand what happens if these winds destroy our — our town and community? There was nobody, nobody on the TV out here in L.A. except [Democratic California Gov.] Gavin Newsom doing his dog and pony show talking about what we’re supposed to do when this happens,” Claypool said. “Nobody had done anything to remove soil and vegetation for the last year. Nobody tested the water pipes. This — this was not brain surgery. It was predicted. These winds were predicted.”

“And don’t believe [Democratic Los Angeles Mayor] Karen Bass when she says that an airplane with water could have saved lives in the Palisades. It’s pipes. It’s proper water. It’s not diverting water for fish in California instead of saving human lives,” Claypool continued. “You want to save human lives? Then do your job and have a — have a plan in place. Harris, there was not an operational plan in place anywhere in L.A. County to help with this.”

President-elect Donald Trump blamed Newsom for the devastation, arguing that the California governor prioritized protecting the delta smelt, a small, three-inch fish, over allowing water to be used by cities and farmers.

Claypool said that Bass, who was in Ghana as part of a delegation when the wildfires broke out, is not the only local official to blame for the devastation.

“And by the way, let’s not just pick on Karen Bass. What about these L.A. County supervisors? They are powerful. Because I’m in L.A. County,” Claypool said. “Those board — those supervisors, Harris, they show up at these press conferences after — after urban carnage, after kids have been murdered in L.A. County, and they try to tell you, ‘Oh, we’re going to do this and that.’ What have they done to prevent it? We’re sick and tired of this.”

There is no reason to think republicans would have done any better.

Especially on the issues that most affected fire fighting like massive infrastructure improvements.

Hey Rico, how much money did the LA fire department get for 2025? Tell the people.

Republicans wouldn’t have caved to environmentalists who pushed LA to cancel desalination plants and building additional reservoirs. The 5th largest economy in the world with the infrastructure of a third world nation due to government corruption, laziness and grift.

Infrastructure is EXPENSIVE to build and update! Most of tge water infrastructure in southern Cali was constructed and designed 90 years ago!
People want to live in “unsafe” areas because of privacy, natural views and they have the $$ and political power to do so. But should everyone else (and I mean everyone else) be obligated to underwrite these folks abs their (selfish) decisions with higher insurance costs abs higher taxes? Meanwhile, folks are demanding government(s) cut their taxes but are demanding governmental services be provided and updated to keep them safe and living in a manor which they have become accustomed.

Are you saying California can't afford it or possibly quite possibly California has spent too much on other things and neglected infrastructure projects?

Cali and Florida..probably have. Building on flood plains, allowing homes to be built where there is very little ir inadequate infrastructure…Ignoring infrastructure is hardly limited to Cali and Florida…it’s a nationwide epidemic with HUGE costs for the public….but “we” are enamored with tax cuts and maintaining and increasing services to be rendered to us.
Like I mentioned earlier, much of this nations infrastructure was built 90 years ago back during the Great Depression…Amerixa has changed significantly in the past 90 years. We build in places we should not build and build infrastructure like if us still 1950.

How many billions have the "misplaced" in recent years again? Seems even one of those billions would have made a massive difference here..

Let me tell you this about California they are not suffering because of tax cuts or lack of taxes, that is for sure.

If so then why have they neglected infrastructure? Bad state and local governments
Too much $$ too much powerful interests to much circumventing regulations… people being people. Governments serving (a few) people at the expense of most of the people. Again, Cali doesn’t have corner on this market. Plenty of examples of the same thing going on in other states (Florida and Texas) for example…no one is exempt.

Based on what? You just really liking republicans?

Folks today are clamoring for proper infrastructure, regardless of cost…2 years from now when the costs are revealed and taxes are going to rise to pay for these projects , these same people will be screaming for tax relief and wasteful spending. That is the human condition.

17.5 million less than it was supposed to be
And you think that 17.5 million went to DEI training? That's a 2% decrease while the police department got a 7% increase. Maybe go look there.

Not sure why we needed a 2nd thread on the same topic, but I linked the actual full budget in the other thread.

What's the number that it came out of. How big was the reduction in terms of percentage?
2%

and .00014% went to a transgender cafe' for homeless transgenders or something like that. Apparently, if that $100K wasn't spent, the fires would have been out in minutes with no loss of life.

So, it's infrastructure issues, NOT DEI training that is responsible?

Every dollar helps, doesn't it?
Sure. But it's extremely misleading to suggest that a tiny cut in spending is why this happened.

That's what I'm against. I'm against poor analysis and misleading rhetoric.

And if you do this is in order to score political points and deceive people into taking your political positions then I really hate your guts and I'm coming after you

You're a dolt, the carnage in California is directly related to the Democratic Leadership in the State.

Californians ultimately got what they voted for.

And I guess us Texans got what we voted for during the 2022 snow storms. Maybe I can take solace in the fact had we had Democratic leadership the death toll would have likely doubled, right?

Seriously, though, since you've been pretty forthright with the specific policies that led to this, could you lay out your plan for how differently you would handled things. We can start with the now infamous $100K. Where specifically would you have allocated those funds and what impact do you perceive those funds to have had on the current situation.
So all the Republican governors and politicians the state has had over the past 100 years did things to prevent a fire like this from ever harming the city?
I blame Arnie the Governator for setting a very bad precedent.
