10-1 gentlemen

Iowa should be #1 anyway...and already are in various computer rankings.

What will be interesting is if Maryland, tied for second in the Big Ten, becomes #1 in the nation. Especially when Iowa is the ONLY team in the nation to have five wins over top 50 teams.

Not that the rankings matter, of course...but they often do defy logic.

How funky would it be to have the #1 and #2 team in the country come tomorrow?? So much for Dakich thinking Indiana was the end all, be all!

I didn't expect we would win there but the boys did. A lot of maturity in this team.

Tough test coming up, Go Hawks!

That, sir, is exactly why they play the games. ;)

Very impressive win, not very pretty, but really good. Thursday could be epic.

So how do they top this next year, continuing the trend of upward trajectory each year?

If Fran gets Iowa into the tournament next year, that will arguably be his best coaching job, just based on what he is losing this year.

I'll bet we finish 9-9 or better in the Big Ten and earn an NCAA invite. The upward trajectory will be more of an internal, "What happens when", as we see the potential and the guys coming in from 2017 and beyond.

By the way....we'd have to finish 3-4 this season for Fran's first six to be equal to Beilein's Big Ten regular season results. :) Which begs the question I'm going to ask in a moment when I open a new thread.

Next year will obviously be a step back from this year. Presuming Jok stays, I would still predict a top half conference finish though, with him in running for conference POY. Yes, lots of underclassman will need to step up, but players will emerge and there is depth/talent from which it can emerge.

Two yrs from now, back to amongst top teams in conference and highly ranked. (Barring any major injuries of course)

A perhaps more intriguing question: presuming Fran keeps things at a high level, does a more "prestigious" job opportunity come along, and if so, what does he do?

He takes the job.

He stays or Margaret chains him to the porch between practices and games. Gotta love Margaret she is the biggest secret weapon Iowa Basketball enjoys and she's as good or better than an extra assistant!!!!

With his kids in the pipeline and given his age, I doubt he leaves Iowa, unless maybe ND were to come open.

Cole, May, Gatens, White for sure.
Devin played poorly down the stretch of sr year.
He would be the outlier however.

Sure seniors have played well for us.
gaten's went from 12.6 ppg to 15.2 ppg. White from 12.4 to 16.8.

The jump in scoring for both Uthoff and Jok is more dramatic.
Uthoff went from 12.4 to 18.4 and player of year candidate, Jok from 7 to 15.1.

It's amazing to me, because we have the blue chip coming next year. I thought this year would be building up to next year, but Fran has delivered!

Fran will stay at Iowa until he retires. He is building his
legend here with the Hawkeyes. His family enjoys the
prospect of his son playing for his father. Notre Dame
would be a step down at this point in his career.

Why all the discussion about next years team and Fran leaving for a "more prestigious" job? No one expected Iowa to be this good last year, so all the blather about them being down after White left was meaningless. And what job would be so great McCaffery would want to leave Iowa and the Big Ten? I can't think of one. I'm not a fan of speculation - enjoy the moment. Some people have a problem doing that.

Just to be clear, I don't think he's leaving at all. Just throwing out one school that may be on his radar if it ever came open. But don't think it will happen before Jonathan is out of HS, if ever. Carry on.

Notre Dame is not getting rid of Mike Brey.

Absolutely correct. This is the only job he and his wife would want to leave Iowa City for, IMHO. If Brey ever leaves ... that is the time to worry. Until then? enjoy. ESPECIALLY if the Hawks make a serious run at the NCAA title this year. That will convince himself and everyone else that you CAN win a title from right here in Iowa.

Edit: as the parent of a 10-year old, I think the health care provided to their son during the cancer scare cannot be overstated. I think they are EXTREMELY happy that U of I hospitals is 400 feet from Carver Hawkeye Arena.

In the years to come we will think of 2015-16 as that "Championship Season".
Well done .... .... I think.

I mean that's a great play and movie, but it's pretty dark.

Years on, the members of the team are all waste-deep in myriad personal problems. On top of it, they start to realize the luster of That Championship Season is beginning to tarnish, and their beloved coach might not be who they thought he was. Hope better for the Hawks and Fran ...

Underrated movie (the original) imo.

We've consistently seen improvement late in careers....Gatens,May,Marble,White etc..

Exactly and we are seeing it again out of Woody, Sap, and JU to a lesser extent (not that he hasn't improved bunches but this type of performance was expected by many of us). Mike has been his consistent self for years, that isn't meant to be a slight he has just been playing a high level of PG for a few years now IMO.

The biggest surprise though has been Pete, oh baby, has he taken his game to another level. IMO the improvement of Pete and Woody is what is making this team go right now, their production wasn't expected to be this high.

All info above is focused just on the offensive side of the floor.

Just for the record, McCaffery was asked on his radio show last Tuesday if he had ambitions to move on. He flatly stated that he and his family loved Iowa City and they weren't going anywhere. I don't know what incentives are in his current contract, but I would like to see him get an extension and a nice raise. He has worked his tail off to get us where we are.

I have to imagine a nice raise and extension coming at the conclusion of the season. If a deep tourney run (final 4) happens he will earn himself even more coin...and he will deserve every penny.

5 years of improvement to record, and tournament success every year is astounding( if this season doesn't have a 13-14 collapse), and it has to do, with soph to jr, and jr to senior development. You don't stop developing after your sophomore year.

Also putting 2 in the pro's, and probably having 2 more guaranteed on the way, is no slouch either.
