11-year-old girl kills herself after 6th grade classmates allegedly bully her about immigration status, threaten to call ICE to have parents deported

This week, This American Life re-ran a story from 2021 where a group of high schoolers were selling their peers in a slave trade over snapchat. Literally posting pics of their BIPOC classmates and saying "how much?" and each one would take turns making fun of them.

The school board meetings had so many parents saying "We are not a racist community, we don't have racism here, the United States is not a racist country" but also... these kids learned that shit somewhere. The parents put way more effort into defending their children than apologizing to the victims.

What's crazy to me is that no one ever does these things and discusses how they are punishing their children for their behavior.

I would other than apologizing which to me is a given say that I don't know where my kid(s) learned that stuff but they are gonna unlearn it freaking fast.

I just read the story. There's no way they didn't hear that at home.

I'm of the mindset 11-year-olds shouldn't even know what ICE and "immigration status" even is. I have a pretty good feeling my son doesn't. Sure, he's naive, BUT he's 11. I'm happy he's focused on soccer, football, the trumpet and his video games.
Shitty Texas school systems run by shitty Texas maga parents and politicians. What would you expect besides bullying of innocent brown folks? Throw the bullyer's ass in juvenile jail for a couple years. Then hold the parents responsible for their kids and do the same for them.

Well, I live in Texas. I've asked my son many times if he witnesses much bullying. He says no, not really. Now, I will caveat that he's not in the "gen pop" because he's in GT/AP classes. Additionally, whites make up around 27% of the population here, so I doubt the "brown folk" are being bullied in that manner.

It's unfortunate that kids will always bully other kids in school, it's been happening for decades.

Even when the person being bullied and their parents say something to the principal, the bullying usually continues until something drastic like this happens.
More like 'from the dawn of time' than decades. Add in adults as well. It is not just kids who bully.

That's crazy. The story I was referring to was actually a seperate incident than even that one. They did mention in the piece that it has happened in other communities.

It's Act one. Not sure if there's a transcript, but it's about a 20 minute listen.

My brother was overweight and had a pretty severe stutter, He was picked on and made fun of regularly in school. If kids could only truly grasp the amount of hurt they can cause. My brother spent far more time crying over how he was treated than any kid should have to endure. I got in a few fights because of how big of assholes some of the kids were. As far as remorse, a few years ago I ran into one of the kids I got in a fight with he actually came up and apologized and asked me to tell my brother how truly sorry he was for the way he treated him.
Kids are assholes and often don’t realize it. Often they see an adult do something so they think it is okay to do. I have a feeling lots of people regret things they said or did while they were in school.

Didn't you just post a screen shot where your son's classmate had a racist (anagram for the n-word) user name?

I'm up to 101.

I think he also introduced the forums to therians as well.

And yet here's an 11 year old girl who was.... so much she made a horrible decision to end her life. So there's that... kids so often model their parents... like I said, shitty racist Texas parents.

I might disagree on this one. Trump certainly fits the mold of a bully, and the 24/7 coverage of it is probably deserved. I suppose it could all depend on what one considers a bully.

He is the classic definite of a bully.

But to this specific point, he has disparaged immigrants (legal and otherwise, btw) for nearly a decade. It is a constant drumbeat of the most vile, not to mention ludicrous, accusations and characterizations. They bring in crime. They're rapists. THEY'RE EATING THE PETS!

Never have we had a President inspire hatred and bullying towards specific groups the way Trump has. It's not even close.

Illegal rape and murder should be unbearable to you. I know facts are hard to seperate from your fantasy hatreds but give it a try.

Curious, what kind of rape is legal in your mind?

What kind of bullying is acceptable vs not? What is that line? Seems like bullying about someone's immigration status is okay. What else is "on the table"?

I agree that he fits the definition. No argument.

But by your specifics wouldn't any president that allowed slavery / owned slaves / promoted genocide of an entire race of people fit that mold? There were what 10+ presidents owned slaves? How many promoted the genocide of Native Americans. That is where my argument lies. Trump is certainly not the first to do inspire hatred towards specific groups.

Andrew Jackson comes to mind.

Yup. He's a Hispanic kid being a dumba$$...like other's pointed out just trying to be "edgy". That's a far cry from engaging in racist bullying. The conversation revolved around should we tell the parents, teacher or stay out of it. I opted for staying out of it, my wife wanted to say something and my son begged me not to "tell" because he was worried his parents would kill him.

...also, I'm pretty confident bullying happens in every school in every state to some degree. This isn't some "unique to Texas" thing that sabula wants to believe.

JFC. First, your post to which I responded questioned whether or not he was a bully.

To address your new argument; I said a President inspiring bullying was “new.” Would you like to modify it to only refer to post Civil War timeframe?

He is a great example of what I was referring to
I think people forget how it was in the earlier years of our country. Trump is the worst in the modern day. He is the first President in my lifetime that has such a blatant disregard for the other party and publicly stated it. There is a reason we are very polarized right now.

Or they outgrow it, or the next kid is “teed up” or school is out.
I went to a new school in sixth grade, just as puberty hit and the girls were forming cliques. I had a hard time at first but I guess I was lucky or tough. I lived through it. I think it’s different now. Poor girl. Very sad.
