"An 11-year-old girl denied an abortion after allegedly being raped by her stepfather has given birth to a healthy baby girl in Asunción, Paraguay, where a fierce debate is brewing over a law banning most abortions.

Thursday's birth was confirmed by Asunción Red Cross Director Mario Villalba.

In the mostly Catholic country, 684 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 gave birth last year. Most of the minors had been victims of sexual abuse, according to government figures. A Paraguayan law bans abortions except in cases where the pregnancy endangers the mother's life.

...

According to a 2013 United Nations report, 2 million girls under age 14 give birth in developing countries every year, many of whom suffer resulting long-term or fatal health problems. It estimated that 70,000 adolescents die each year from complications from pregnancy or childbirth."

Any comments, pro-lifers?

I would bet the deaths from child birth are larger than those from legal abortions. Who wants to fact check this?
Found some numbers and it looks like abortions account for about 13% of maternity deaths, about 35000, most of these in developing nations. But this was for all women, not adolescents.

It would also be safe to assume there are a lot more births than legal abortions.

It would also be safe to assume that medical care in developing nations is fairly shitty overall, and thus those statistics are artificially inflated from what they would be in a first world country.

Thanks for the effort. We're going to need more to arrive at a conclusion however. Were those deaths all from legal abortions? Are we looking at about 300k deaths from child birth total around the world? If abortion is over 90% safer than birthing a child, how can anyone ever fault a person for picking this option? It's like being against self defence.

No most were from illegal abortions. In countries where abortion is legal it is generally much safer. I also was wrong on the number. It is 13% but 47000 deaths.
I have no idea how accurate it is.

I'd say the institution of Catholicism is to blame in that country for that situation. And I don't seem to remember cons being the main voting target of that religion in this country.

But go ahead and plant your flag of rage against US anti-abortion cons anyway since it supports your argument so clearly. After all, abortion here vs abortion in Paraguay...same thing, amiright? So, cons here are guilty by association because of a backwards-ass country full of a religion so corrupt it allows priests to rape their children globally outlawed abortions that would apply to this story's circumstances? Got it. Guilty as charged.

Is the new pope, who on this very board getting rave reviews from WWJD et al, demanding abortion legalization in Paraguay? Or are you conveniently washing your hands on that one since it doesn't fit neatly into your rage du jour?

This board some times...keep in mind, I'm a fiscal con who (among other so-called liberal issues) is pro-abortion. So blast away. Because evidently I am guilty.

The usual suspects are awfully quiet here. Come on, let's talk about the preteen mother forced to birth the quasi-incestual rape baby. This is what you want; after all, it's a human life!!
