LOL...one of these things is not like the others - no matter how many times you try to make it so.

It's not a vote for default. There are 2 reasons people would vote no:

1. They thought their side should have pressed for a better deal (probably couldn't have realistically gotten one).

2. Appearance. They want to show constituents "they tried to do better," but also know their vote won't decide whether it passes or not, so they get the best of both worlds (deal done, with deniability).

Good news is both sides hate it, so they must have gotten it right.

Voting against it because you didn't get everything you wanted for the hostage is not the same as voting against it because you fear it emboldens hostage-takers is not the same thing. Saying the two things are the same provides cover for the hostage-takers. They were some Democrats who openly stated that they voted based upon that principle, but would have changed their vote had it been needed in the end. Raising the debt ceiling has never been an issue of brinkmanship with a Democratic Congress. Both sides are not the same.

Not really...a vote against was a vote for default. No matter how you want to spin it...

Keep providing cover though...
A Dem vote against was a vote against holding the debt ceiling - and the world economy hostage. Knowing it would pass.

A GOP vote against was a vote that they didn't extort ENOUGH by holding the debt ceiling - and the world economy - hostage. Knowing it would pass.

Not the same at all.

Exactly the same but by all means spin away.

This late in the game on a deal the President signed off on....it's a default vote.

Sooooo….you’re telling me politicians are grandstanding pieces of shit? For anyone paying attention it shouldn’t have taken this vote to know that. The question really is which ones are more dangerous? I know my answer.

Fair enough.

Call it grandstanding idiocy if you want...still idiocy.

Most of those "idiots" knew the bill was going to pass in the House and voted Nay so they could tell their constituents later that they were fighting for ... something.
Which is terrifying...

The vote won't be held against them and it should.

If the "idiot" litmus test isn't palatable to some...the vote was definitely a "adult v child" referendum.

The adults in congress voted yes...the children no....

I'd think folks would appreciate adults running the operation but unfortunately that obviously isn't the case.

I actually called it grandstanding pieces of shit. I like that better. And yes, it’s still shit. One just stinks worse.

So if you're opposed to holding the economy of the world hostage but you know there's a deal on the table rewarding those who do just that, you MUST support it even though you know it passes regardless of how you vote?

This is an excellent example of the dysfunction that is American politics and governance.

So, we're 5 days away from default with likely disasterous consequences. And you are presented with a vote to avoid it. Simple, right?

But, the bill contains one or several things you are dead set against. Maybe something you campaigned against - maybe something you have publicly opposed for your entire career.

So, the gun is pointed at your head. What do you do? Both answers have negative consequences.

I'm not going to point to any one congressman or any one provision, because I don't have those facts. And, I and clearly not going to defend anyone.

I just don't think it's as simple as adults and children IMO.

In the other thread Joe's place says the Rs got absolutely nothing they wanted. You are saying the Rs are rewarded. Which is it?

Is it possible you all are just a bunch of political hacks that only care about the letter after the name?

That something would be bankruptcy for many of their constituents. Something to be proud of.

They were rewarded by getting to deal. Paying our debts shouldn't even be on the table.

If your "No" vote was a protest against even having to go through the charade of a debt ceiling vote in the first place, you should have voted "Present" and then explained that you think the 14th amendment makes this a pointless bill that is unnecessary and it is a waste of time.

They voted for the default and voted against the deal Biden cut...

It is what it is...

The priority was raising the debt ceiling and avoiding default. With 5 days left we were past time for messing around with it.

At the very least it shows that their priorities and judgement are lacking.

I'll go with that. No problem.

So those voting third party in a presidential election are voting for the person they think is the worst choice between the two major parties.

We cannot continue this runaway spending. We are spending our way to an economic disaster of proportions never seen before.

Because the two candidates the D's and R's totally suck?

Voting third party isn't equivalent to voting no on a debt ceiling increase to avoid default by members of congress IMO.
Yes it is.

Well, voting third party in a swing state is far worse, so I'll give you that it isn't the same there.

Hmmm...so the vote of a citizen in a election is equivalent to a vote by an elected member of congress in the House of Representatives to raise the debt ceiling?

I disagree....

A vote is a vote. And a meaningless vote to express one's displeasure with the choices presented is a meaningless vote to express one's displeasure with the choices presented.

So...in a state where the outcome is foreordained...a third-party vote is a meaningless vote to express one's displeasure with the choices presented. In Congress, where the outcome is foreordained, a no vote on the debt ceiling pkg is a meaningless vote to express one's displeasure with the choices presented.

In a battleground state, a third-party vote could sway the election to the person the voter thinks is least qualified. So...worse...the vote of an actual idiot. There is no link to this vote in the House because there was no question as to how the vote on the debt ceiling pkg was going to go. The outcome - again - was foreordained.

We cannot continue this runaway spending. We are spending our way to an economic disaster of proportions never seen before.
I agree - but no one in DC seems to care about it very much. I think the reason is that Washington can only seem to focus on about 3 days at a time. Climate Change and the Federal Debt is not going to be a problem in the next 3 days, so they ignore it.

Our Leaders in Washington.

The positive here is that Biden and the Party leadership (both parties) were able to hold together the middle of their caucuses. They were able to reign in their “fringes” yet allowed them to express themselves and the business (routine) of Congress was not derailed.
