12/27 GAMES THREAD: 2pm: N'w @ PSU; 4pm: Ill @ MD; 6pm:Rutgers@Wisky; 8 pm: MSU @ MN

Penn state looks slow, Carr will be good. Terrible Defense. Hard to tell if NW is good or if PSU is that bad

PSU looks like the Iowa team that played UVA/Memphis. They are struggling on the defensive end! Trying to press but not stopping anyone.

I think NW is going to be a tough team. They only thing is their lack of a post game. They have shooters/athletes all over the floor. But they are missing the big guy in the paint.

Northwestern is for real...NCAA tournament IMO.

Penn State is young but its talented young....I don't see them playing much better than they were 3 weeks ago.

Illinois plays horrible..way too much experience & talent to not play as a team...all on Groce...5th? Combes?...they got 15 minutes left in Maryland game to show what they are made of.

Maryland...good team..especially tough at home.

Maryland is really young; they start 3 freshman, 1 sophomore, and 1 junior (Melo Trimble)

I agree; Illinois can't seem to get their act together; how much more patience do the fans/the admin have?

Groce has to be the worst major conference coach in the country. It's like he's learned nothing since he's been in Champaign. Still the same soft, dumb and undisciplined team they've been for years now.

Rutgers may bring get the BIG in the NYC market but they are never going to be a good fit. OTH Maryland, at least in basketball, seems like they have been a member for a long time already. Maryland is developing rivalries. Rutgers not so much.

We're going to find out what I was saying last summer about our youth. There are only three teams in the Big Ten with a whole lot of experience. The whole league is practically a youth movement.

I see Izzo finally admitted today he may have over scheduled his non-conference schedule this year considering his youth.

Yeah, hindsight is always 20/20. Looking ahead is just a bit harder.

That's why I'm not ready to buy in to the Big Ten being all that down this year. By the time of the NCAA's there could be some teams that have grown quite a bit over the course of a season.

And you've been talking about one since the start of the year. Northwestern has some decent talent.

Minnesota is the more (not by much but a little) talented team. I understand that's with MSU being without Bridges, Carter & Schilling. Both teams play erratic.

Did I see that right? Wisc next 2 games are at Indiana & Purdue?

These refs in the Minnesota game are a disgrace to the profession. You call a foul and don't know who to put on the line? Izzo's team plays games by putting a good shooter on the line and essentially gets a free timeout when the refs have to review the play. Bullshit.

The guy that went to the line was 4-12 on his free throws.

Wow this a great college game. Makes up for that up Maryland/Illini game.

After today I feel pretty good about the Hawks chances. Worried about guard play still, but Iowa should be able to hang with every team I saw today outside of "Wisconsin"

IA's weakness is defense and no shot blocker inside but boy do we have shooters!!! IA's 3pt shot and % are higher this year so IA should steal a couple of major wins in conference; I just hope it's tomorrow.

This is one of my favorite times of the year...start of conference season. Will the real men stand up? Hopefully we will be one of them.

The Big Ten might be down a tad this season, but there are a slew of promising young players in the league and that bodes well for the future, unless you're a coach in the league. Stock up on the bromo-seltzer, guys.

Lunardi has 9 teams from the Big Ten making the Dance?? Is that right? Seems like an awful lot of teams. I would say maybe 6 at the most.

That's right:

Iowa, Illinois not among them but Northwestern and Minnesota are. This came out before yesterday's games.

Important thing to note, we don't have to look at the nine to decide if that is accurate, we have to look at the entire field. And though the Big Ten doesn't have a dominate team (two reached the four seed), the Big Ten does have a solid nine/eleven teams maybe more that can do what it takes to get a bid.

Nine is not outrageous, but give some teams time to shoot themselves in the foot and the figure could be eight, seven. Six? Now you're giving many other conferences a bigger edge than I would.

The biggest question as always will come down to the end when Mid-Majors are hosting their own tournaments. We really, really want no surprises as each upset Tournament winner practically assures a Mid-Major conference gets two invites.

Yeah mid majors always seem to take up some bids, but this year only the WCC is the only legit league to get 2 bids. I seriously don't think the MVC gets two teams in. WSU is good, but if they lose in conference they could be on the bubble as well. Their RPI right now is mid 70's and there are no world beaters in the MVC. That number will probably stay around that.

A-10 is down, as is the Colonial and others. This tournament could be hard to field this year. I just do not see a lot of great teams in the mid-majors like there have been in years past. Now I do understand that if WSU or a UNI goes on a run in conference, then it could be a different story.
