15 Years Of Fran: What is his crowning acheivement?

Yeah I'd have to go with the Big 10 Tournament title in '22.

A pretty strong regular season in '21 (team got a 2 seed). That was by far his high water mark. The '22 team got a 5 seed. Otherwise it was all 7-11 seed in the dance.

But he didn't really accomplish a whole lot else outside of that. Some NCAA tournament appearances, and won 4 first round games. Not bad, but nothing special, either.

That said, we're all talking about Fran in the past tense. We still don't know for sure that he's done. Waiting on Beth..

2022 Big Ten Tournament Champions

2d place is Mostly Perennial Upper Half Finishes (*snicker*)

3d is finishing tied for 3d in the B1G a few times

4th is some corporate pre-con MTE I think we won years ago.

Good dude. Good coach. Probably maxed out the resources he had to work with here, tbh.

His Crowning achievement would be to step down with grace and take a reduced buyout. He milked the program for probably $30 million in salary over 15 years. He provided a product that was okay, but nothing special. He Failed to adapt when the Portal became a thing. Then he snoozed when NIL came along and didn't show any leadership in marketing/strategic moves to bring in NIL. The BTT was his crowning achievement on the court, but in that regard he underperformed Alford who had 2 BTT championships. He goes out as OKay, but he failed to make hay when he had his chances with Garza, Weezy,Murray Bro's. His 29 year head coaching career with no sweet16's is probably the longest streak of head coaching futilty of anyone still employed at a P4 school.

I guess the 2022 Big Ten Title.

So, 15 years of coaching our Iowa Hawkeyes. One BTT. Got to the second round of the tournament four times. Got to the sweet sixteen zero times.

That is a thin list of accomplishments for 15 years.
I’ll always be thankful to Fran for bringing respectability and passion back to the program. Some great individual players and entertaining basketball. But it’s time for him to go.

Easy. Getting that ridiculous contract extension from that imbecile Barta. Must have pictures of Barta with a live boy or a dead girl.

For sure he was one of the best ever at talking-up nearly every player on his teams to the media pre-season in a fairly believable manner that for awhile instilled hope.. 'He can this, he can do this, he runs the floor...'

Getting Iowa out of that disaster Lickliter era 😴 that took place before he was hired and putting together a solid competitive squad every year. Time for change and hopefully the next man can take the program back to the second weekend of the tournament.

If the bitch is that Frans longevity has created stagnation, i would think that the program is on stable ground…. Look at the prgram the decade prior…. He brought some stability. He may have plateaued, but its not like Iowa was top flight location going in. Short of a massive influx in resources and a change in game day environment, another coach will more than likely experience the same results or less. It starts with Carver and what the AD can sell. It needs to evolve.

2nd in the B1G to only Bobby Knight in chair throwing distance.
Most temper tantrums in career.
#1 in tolerating players who bitch, whine and moan about refs.
1st in B1G in starting sons over NBA talent.
2nd only to Big Lick in season attendance drop-off.
#1 in fan apathy.

Iowa has hired average coaches and got average results. Go get McCollum, who has won at a high level wherever he has been

Better than Minnesota, Northwestern, Rutgers, Penn State, Nebraska.

On par w/ Maryland

Not too far behind what Indiana has done.

We're in a small state w/ another Power 5 school in the state who has the better basketball program, and has, for the last 25 years. I'm not sure the expectation can be for Iowa to consistently perform in the top half of the B1G right now. We're a long ways away from that point.

Surprisingly level-headed response from you. Just takes one great season to turn it around, especially if they can get a superstar. A lot different from football.
