Not true. Hayden would play the defending national champion every year to begin the following season. We would then play teams that finished 2nd and 3rd before alternating between Ohio State and Michigan 4 games a piece to round out the schedule.

That "short period" = 1985. Before the '85 game had last played them in 1941 and haven't played since. (Drake downgraded its football program after the '85 season).

Drake and Northern Illinois filled in for Miami-FL and Kansas. Miami-FL arrived in 1992 for home opener, after Kickoff Classic, why KU bailed on contract ....

I wonder how a home game against Miami (FL) the first game of the season would have gone. Miami was pretty good that year, 10-2 beat Oklahoma and Florida State in Doak Walker Stadium. Would have been a good game.
