Just a thought that crossed my mind today. Personally, I think the 2 best football teams in 2002 played in the Orange Bowl, and not the national championship game. I think Iowa and USC were both better than Ohio state and Miami. We didn't get our head to head matchup with Ohio state that year or it easily could've been Iowa playing for the NC that season.
This year, we're gonna get our shot. Can't stub our toe before then and hope to play in the playoff, but we're gonna get our head to head with them and we can prove it on the field. Are we better than Ohio state? That's a debatable issue. But I don't see anything out of Ohio state to this point in the year that makes me think we can't play with them.

Plus we wont have as many weeks off between the last game and the bowl game. 2002 was crazy long and I think it affected us significantly.

This is exactly right. in 2002 the season ended before Thanksgiving, there was no BTT game.... Also we had our QB and coach in New York taking away their attention away from the team (I get USC had that too), but we lost some valuable prep time in that process
