Well with 2016 upon us, I figured it would be a good time to start a baseball thread. Iowa opens up the season on Friday, February 19th at 6:30pm. It's game one of a three game series @ Dallas Baptist. Iowa definitely has a tougher schedule this year with the three game set @ DBU, also three games @ Missouri State, three games vs Kansas State later in the year. Iowa also will face Indiana State in a single game down in Florida.

Iowa's B1G slate is also tougher this year. While I think Iowa is at least a top eight (conference tournament) team, it will be tougher sledding and if a thing or two goes wrong we could be left out. We get Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State. We also get Penn State and Minnesota who I expect to be improved. So as I said, unless I am missing something then I expect it to be tougher sledding. If Iowa gets swept a couple times then I could see them missing the B1G tournament.

We obviously know our pitching rotation will be Tyler Peyton, Calvin Mathews, and probably Ryan Erickson to start the year. One of the questions I have is who steps up? We need some guys to step up and be good in relief and midweek starts.

Maybe I'm too hopeful but I feel Nick Gallagher and Connor Grant will both be serviceable midweek after a year in the program.

Gallagher showed flashes, Grant towards the last part of the season couldn't throw a strike it seemed. I am curious to see if any of the freshman get into the mix.

Gallagher's fastball was his best pitch last year, which is expected for a kid who threw 91-92 during fall ball last year. He would benefit greatly from a secondary offering.

Is UNO playing at Millard North now? For some reason I thought I heard that. They got the new turf field last year. Either way, it's kind of crazy that they couldn't move it to Werner or something when Iowa comes to town. I guess I'll have to look forward to watching the Hawks at TD Ameritrade.

Not that I know of. My friend is on the Western Illinois staff and last spring he complained to me about the field conditions after a weekend series. I have quite a few friends who played against UNO when they were still D2 and they couldn't say enough bad things about it.

UNO plays a couple games a year at Werner Park, otherwise the majority of their home games are at Boys Town.

Over Christmas Break, we had out boys (4th and 7th grade) in the gym getting some throwing in. Had a couple of kids from Kennedy that are a part of the Iowa team this year as freshman. They were throwing the ball around. Looking forward to seeing Zach and Sammy making an impact for the Hawkeyes!

Looks like new black jerseys this season, the reverse of the gold pullovers with "Iowa" in script. But what happened to the black button-front jerseys with flying Herky that were worn for media day last year? Those were sweet!!
