I heard a story on NPR this morning about huge problems with some of the water events. Specifically that rowing and sailing events are being held in water that is fouled with human waste, and athletes who have gone down to train are getting horribly sick. Many facilities are still way behind in construction.
They did pull off a good World Cup, but this is bigger, and there has been considerable economic and political upheaval since the World Cup. This may turnout to be a rocky Olympics. TV will smooth over the difficulties, but I also wonder about the possibility of protests. Brazilians didn't seem to want to protest while their soccer team was playing in the World Cup, but Olympics and tougher economic times may turn out differently.

How do you get sick from contaminated water when you're on a boat? Are they drinking it for some reason?

Not quite true, but I agree these protests might be even larger.

Can they stop putting poop in the river for the next 8 months? Maybe that will help.

We were down there to watch my daughter row in the Jr. Worlds last summer. The Lagoon is filthy, the kids have to wash with bleach water when they come out of the water. All it takes it water splashing up into your eyes, or onto your face and you get some in your mouth. The kids took their water bottles with them and kept them in plastic bags, rowing is an intense sport and you are constantly hydrating. Despite trying to limit exposure to water from the lagoon, kids got sick. I would say that 20% of the kids from all the countries got sick at some point. The problem the reporting is poor, as coaches do not want to tip the other teams as to who is sick in their boat, so official reports are limited. The French boat claimed no one got sick, yet we have photos of two of their rowers vomiting over the side of the boat. Rio, over all is lovely. When we went down it was something like 2.3 Real to the dollar. It is now 4 to the dollar. So damn cheap when we went there, I cannot imagine what it is like now. Airfare will choke you though.

Anyhow, Rio has 6.3 million people, 1.3 million live in favellas that have open sewers, many of these drain into the Lagoon. So that is what you get, a big rain in the hills washes it all down at once.

Exactly what happens when we have to share the olympics with the rest of the world. The olympics have grown so large there are probably only a handful of places on earth that can do it right.

As glad as I am that they didn't end up in Chicago (I admit, I liked the idea 8 years ago) this is why these organizations shouldn't sell out their votes to the highest bidder. What's even worse is with the zika virus outbreak down there anybody who is Pregnant, or will be pregnant at that time needs to stay home.

Members of the IOC would strongly disagree with this statement.

Yes, too much regulation is what gave them poo in the water. It's like every time a con points fingers it's because he knows he is guilty. Only one team is for environmental protection. Your team is out shooting people so they can burn the forest down. And let's not forget what your team did to Flint.

Who proposed the EPA and signed the EO approving it?

Derp.

This is hardly new news...heard the exact same story 6-9 months ago. The only thing disturbing is that it doesn't seem to be improving.

Approximately what percentage of athletes do think this will affect?

More worried about the fans and then what happens when they bring it back to the countries they originate from. We've got plenty of mosquitoes in north america capable of transmitting the virus.

I understand its not contagious person to person. Is that correct? Anyone know? If it is correct doesn't that alleviate the fear of people returning with the virus?

Mike Greenberg of Mike & Mike on ESPN has been all over this story for about a year. In classic IOC fashion, they are in full containment mode. The head of the international sailing federation was recently fired when he publically criticized the conditions in Rio and suggested that the rowing and sailing events be moved to a coastal resort area about 100 miles north of Rio that had a clean body of water that was capable of holding the events.

Greenberg has offered a monetary payment out of his own pocket to any IOC member that is willing to take their respective immediate family to Rio and swim for 30 minutes in the lagoon with their family. Obviously there have been no takers.

And I would vote to never hold them here again. It's just a waste of money. We already waste enough money on illegals and our armed forces. I had someone try to explain to me why we still needed to pump a bunch of money into the armed forces and that we were actually falling behind in the world. What do you say to something like that?

There's some evidence suggesting it can be transferred sexually, but the primary way is through mosquito bites. Think of west nile, only this affects developing babies. It's not ebola, but it will be tragic for many babies if it becomes widespread. From what I've read the symptoms are also very mild if you are not pregnant.

If I understand, that should mean the public has nothing to fear about sick people returning with this virus. Does that sound basically correct?

No, if they get infected down there when they return they can infect local mosquitoes which could then give it to people here. Similar to West Nile virus, once it's here it probably won't go away.

Oh, now I get why I should care. Thanks.

It's a very specific species of mosquito that can carry the virus, and it's a particularly tropical variety. Probably won't be a problem anywhere in the US except Florida (of course).
OK, well in that case this is another opportunity to piss off soup, so I no longer care.

I'm not pissed. Why would you think I would get pissed over a message board? Do you get pissed over a message board?
You project pissed most of the time from my POV. I think it is your default state in or out of any particular forum. I firmly believe you are a master watersports engineer. If your goal is to come across as easy going and jovial, you have failed. Why are you even asking me to analyze you?
