To be clear...are you saying if Connor McCaff was offered part of the 11.7 baseball scholarship limit ... it would also count toward the 13.0 basketball limit?

IIRC, the rule is that if you are playing a "head count" sport and an "equivalency" sport and are on scholarship, you count against the head count sport. For men, there are two head count sports, baseball and football. So, if Connor wanted to play baseball on scholarship but walk on to the basketball team, he'd still count against basketball. Basically, he'll have to walk on to both sports if he plays both or actually be on a basketball scholarship (if he takes a scholarship).

If he played, say, football and basketball and was on scholarship for football, he'd only count against football. If he, say, ran cross country and was on scholarship for baseball, he'd only take up whatever part of a baseball scholarship he was receiving. But basketball and football are treated differently if they are combined with one of the other sports.

If he is saying that, he would be incorrect. Thats why track coaches love to get their runners on football scholarships, because it doesn't count toward their scholarship distribution

You can play football on scholarship and still run track without counting against track. However, if a scholarship track athlete wanted to play football, they would count against football scholarship limits.

Heard from a source last night that Nunge committed to the coaches yesterday.

could be true.....would like a to look into that if you have a link

I'm pretty sure you meant Basketball and Football as "head count" sports, and if so that's my recollection. Into the 1970's some coaches had receivers that were on track scholarships, to get around football scholarship limits IIRC. Now those type coaches run off unproductive players (see Saban).

Yep, just fat fingered baseball in instead of basketball.

Nothing personal, but another poster's "pretty good source" had Nunge commiting y'day.

The only good source is the athletic department/b-ball program itself.

If Nunge or Garza commits, the news won't be coming from the athletic department or the basketball program. Teams/coaches cannot mention a recruit by name until they sign a LOI. If we get news, it will be from the player himself or from one of the websites (like Hawkeye Report).

Didn't follow basketball recruiting so I checked out a Nunge video. Talk about having some "old man game".

FTR: I like Nunge a lot more than Garza. Nunge reminds me of a poor man's Cody Zeller.

If you ask Fran "Did Joe Blow commit today?" is he able to answer yes or no without getting in trouble with the NCAA?

Found it...finally. The NCAA rules are hard.

15.5.9.2 Basketball. A counter who practices or competes in basketball and one or more other sports (other than football) shall be counted in basketball.

And

15.5.9.7 Other Sports. Except as otherwise provided in this section, a counter who participates in two or more sports shall be counted in one of the sports but shall not be counted in the others.

15.5.9.7.1 Requirement to Qualify as Multisport Athlete. [FBS/FCS] To be considered a multisport athlete under this section, an individual must meet all of the following requirements: (Revised: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

(a) The individual shall report and participate fully in regularly organized practice with each squad;

(b) The individual shall participate where qualified in actual competition in each sport;

(c) The individual shall be a member of each squad for the entire playing and practice season; and

(d) If a recruited student-athlete (per Bylaw 15.02.8), the individual shall have been earnestly recruited to participate in the sport in which financial aid is counted (the institution recruiting the student-athlete shall have a reasonable basis to believe that the student-athlete is capable of participating in the institution's varsity intercollegiate program in that sport, including documentation of a record of previous participation in organized competition in the sport that supports the student-athlete's potential to participate in that sport in varsity intercollegiate competition).

Unfortunately, the link isn't a direct link, but this is as close as I can figure out how to get you there.

Sorry if confusing. CID is Cedar Rapids airport. Yes, talking as if he commited. His mom and dad (or coach) were helping him with how to tell the other coaches who recruited him and with a possible tweet to indicate that he committed.

Nice, we should hear something early this upcoming week as he has a visit to Creighton lined up for next weekend. I'm sure if he committed he'll extend Creighton and Coach McDermott the courtesy of notifying him and cancelling his visit fairly soon.

Congrats to both Luka, Jack and the entire staff. The roster is loaded, big things coming for Iowa Basketball! Love it!

Wow, what a weekend for the Hawkeyes!

Congratulations to Jack & Luka, really looking forward to seeing them both contribute to Iowa basketball success over the next few years.

It's great to be a Hawkeye!
