Open w/ Loras weather permitting. Open D1 @ South Florida. Nebraska, and some others have been publicly released.

There is a late season road trip to either Washington or Oregon, I don't recall which.

The schedule is back loaded, so plenty of opportunity to build RPI is Iowa is in the mix late.

@Rutgers (March 7-9) and @Minnesota (March 28-30) round out the Big Ten schedule so no SoCal teams this year.

This also means no total dregs on the non conference schedule (like SD State) that come in here for a 3 game series in March where we basically need to sweep to come out even. The Beavs are a huge get on the schedule, Wazzu is not.

I never like us to sacrifice a May weekend to have the team play in Des Moines instead of playing at DB.

For those who haven't followed the changes:

-30 B1G games (increase from 24)
-BTT - Top 12 qualify, in 4 groups of 3. It's unknown whether the top-seed will serve as the tiebreaker in the event that all teams tie at 1-1 (as it does in the ACC that tried it last year). This essentially makes it a single elimination tournament for seeds 5-12, while allowing the top seed in the pod a chance to advance just by beating the winner of the game between the lower-seeded teams. The Final 4 pod winners will play single elimination with semifinals on Saturday and a final on Sunday. This obviously favors the high seeds and eliminates the 'war of attrition' for the pitching staffs. the BTT has turned into and undoes the 1-loss-in-the-championship-game loophole.

30 days from now we will have Iowa baseball.

It's nice to see the full 55 game schedule filled in (25 nonconference & 30 conference games). It will be interesting to see how difficult it will be to watch some of the nonconference games.

The Full 55 Game Schedule:

Do you have any insight to the roster? Starters, pitchers?

CW is Cade, Watts and Sav. I personally think there are some additional candidates. From what I saw this fall I think the pitching will be greatly improved. Of course this is what I thought last season. They're just pitching away more, and there are less sliders being thrown. They have more ability based on the pitch calling I saw to work back in to the batter.

Reece Beuter is going to be greatly improved. He has everything it takes to be a great pitcher, and last season just got hit, sometimes on really good pitches. He picked up velo, and his slider and fastball have almost the same release point. If that works, that a great combination.

Offense is the thousand pound gorilla. Some unknown names are going to appear. Miles Risley is one example. Daniel Rogers is another example.

22 new guys before the roster gets reduced to 40. I had thought they needed to be at 34 this season, but Rick told me 40, and 34 next season.

I liked what I saw this fall. They are a hard working "blue collar" type of team. The pitchers need to do what I know they can do. Some bats need to emerge earlier than expected. Changing batting and offensive development take longer, and this is a team full of new guys and younger guys.

I want to see a couple of guys step up into a leadership role. I think Gable is a mature, smart young man. I don't think it's to early for some guys like Reese Moore to step up either.

Several other relative unknown names looked to be contributors during fall ball. I'm leaving a bunch of names out.

Thanks. I assume there are more than 40 players "trying out" fo rthe team? If so, what happens to those that don't make the 40 man?

As I read the roster, there are close to 50 right now. Not sure if guys transfers out, wait a season, red shirt or retire from baseball.

One of the younger pitchers who pitched well in wood bat is out with Tommy John, so very likely at least a couple of medical red shirts in addition to him.

Makes sense. I was thinking "does college baseball stockpile players if they are over the 40 man limit" kind of thing. Like stash players (Kirkwood/IWCC, etc) like D1 football did/does.

Yes and no. Due to transfer portal, and less so NIL and whatever revenue sharing is left over for baseball, many high school prospects are encouraged to go DII, DIII, NAIA and JuCo. Football isn't different is this area, just less of this. The transfer deadlines worked out (so far) to prevent teams from over signing, then cutting and players having no ability to transfer. I mean it still is happening, but the egregious stuff is hopefully over. It's still in flux, and it's complicated. Some, not all of the NIL is third party. Most individual donors I direct to Swarm. Some individual donors still use my entity.

So Iowa just flat out doesn't play 7 teams in the B10 this year.

F***ing idiotic mess is conference realignment.

I’m back until next Friday. If the team gets to practice outside on Sunday I plan to attend. Not sure what more can be posted than what already has been, but I’ll do my best.

A lot of competition for playing time which has been good, and hopefully pays dividends this season.

I’m am going to make the four hour drive north for the USF series. I’d expect a lot of guys see action as they try to sort things out.
