35 Hawks on NFL Rosters. 6 Free Agents (Updated March 27)

Riley dropped a punt that immediately led to the other team scoring and narrowing the lead to 27-20.

I hope he gets another chance, but I suspect he will be released. Damn!

Here's what you need to know from Sunday.

1. C.J. Beathard gave the 49ers everything on Sunday. He threw for 292 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Both picks arguably weren't his fault. The first certainly wasn't. San Francisco was in the red zone and a pass bounced off the hands of Garrett Celek hands and into the arms of Chargers defensive back Trevor Williams. The second came on San Francisco's final drive when Beathard got hit in the pocket. The ball popped loose and Chargers defensive lineman Isaac Rochell caught it before it hit the ground.

The touchdowns went to Kendrick Bourne and George Kittle. Bourne caught his on a quick slant from 2-yards out. Kittle found himself wide open downfield for what turned into an 82-yard touchdown catch. The tight end showcased his speed as he ran away from the Chargers secondary on his way into the end zone. Overall, the 49ers couldn't have asked for any more out of Beathard. He was very impressive.

"He gave us a chance to win," Kyle Shanahan said postgame.

4. The secondary looked much improved, limiting Rivers to 250 yards through the air and Keenan Allen to just 63 receiving yards. That success was carried over to third down where the 49ers held the Chargers to just 4-of-14. Greg Mabin subbed into the game for Jimmie Ward and played well in his first extended action of the season.

6. Beathard showed off the toughness that earned him the respect of his teammates. The second-year quarterback took a few big hits. On one third-down scramble, Beathard lunged for the first-down marker before taking a shoulder to the sternum. Beathard got the wind knocked out of him but never missed a snap.

8. Kittle finished the game with six receptions for a career high 125 yards, highlighted by the 82-yard score. The tight end is currently on pace for 1,264 yards in 2018. He'll continue to be a go-to option for Beathard.

The 49'ers were 10 point underdogs to the Chargers. The O/U was 46.5, so Vegas was expecting a 28-18 type game. Instead, it was 29-27. The 49'er Pick 6 and the Charger missed Xtra points & FGs probably ticked off some bettors.

CJ and George set a franchise record.

The 82 yd TD bomb yesterday from CJ to George was the longest TD by a tight end in 49'ers franchise history.

Think about that for a second. Joe Montana once QB'd the 49'ers.

SENIOR REPORTER

A 1-3 start to the San Francisco 49ers 2018 season isn't what most had hoped for, but there have still been several bright spots from the first quarter of the campaign. The play of George Kittle and Matt Breida has garnered the attention of media outlets around the country. So much so that Pro Football Focus has added both second-year skill players to its First Quarter All-Pro Team.

Kittle has caught 18 passes for 316 yards and one touchdown. The tight end's 218 yards after the catch rank third in the NFL behind only Alvin Kamara and Saquon Barkley.
His 82-yard touchdown in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers set a new 49ers franchise record for longest score by a tight end. Kittle is currently PFF's top-graded tight end which earned him the starting spot on the All-Pro team.

"He has pretty good speed for a tight end," Shanahan said on Wednesday. "He’s a very good blocker, and he’s got good hands. He can get in and out of cuts.”

Breida's 313 rushing yards rank third in the NFL through four games, and he's leading the league with six runs of 20-plus yards. He's also averaging 7.6 yards per carry which is tops in the NFL among running backs with more than 10 carries. He's added 10 receptions for 85 yards. PFF named Breida as their honorable mention behind Kamara. What's impressive is how he's been able to rack up yards despite battling through shoulder and knee injuries. Breida is practicing on Wednesday and is expected to be ready to go in Week 5.

The 49ers will count on both players to help carry the offense on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

49ers notes: Greg Mabin works his way into CB picture

SANTA CLARA – Richard Sherman is not ruling out a return to action Sunday after missing the past 1 ½ games with a mid-calf strain.

Sherman took part in practice Thursday and could make a bid to get back on the field when the 49ers play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. When Sherman comes back, his return to the starting lineup will be the only thing certain about the team’s cornerback situation.

Currently, it is not clear whether Ahkello Witherspoon, Jimmie Ward or Greg Mabin would be the starter on the other side. The three took part in a cornerback rotation last week that could continue indefinitely, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said.

Mabin entered into the picture last week to split time with Witherspoon and Ward in the 49ers’ 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Mabin played 29 snaps, taking 11 snaps away from Ward and 18 from Witherspoon.

“No one’s down on Ahkello at all,” Saleh said. “Mabin went in and played for Jimmie, too, and no one’s down on Jimmie. It’s more of a product of the fact that Mabin has been playing very, very well and he deserved a chance to shine.”

Mabin made a tackle and forced a fumble on his first two plays. The Chargers completed two of the four passes thrown to his side for 18 yards, according to Pro Football Focus.

“He came out and executed and played hard, he brought energy, intensity,” Sherman said. “The coaches have been talking about him for weeks. He’s had amazing days in practice. He’s been incredible, locked in and executing, so it was good to see him get his opportunity.”

When asked what it will take the 49ers to settle on one cornerback opposite of Sherman?

“One of them to grab hold of it and put a stranglehold on it and don’t let go,” Saleh said.
