43 Hawks on NFL Rosters. 6 Free Agents, including Micah Hyde (Updated July 26)

Interesting.....

Reports are that Andrew Luck decided to retire right before the season. I wonder if the 49ers would dangle CJ as trade bait. He's a guy with starting experience over multiple seasons. Could be a good spot for him as they should have a better O-Line than the 49ers to keep him upright and healthy.

But it wouldn't surprise me if the 49ers keep 3 QBs considering how bad their O-Line is. They're going to need their backups throughout the season.

There are lots of rumors going around about CJ Beathard. As you can see from what I posted last night (post 396, five posts above), there are rumors that he could be traded to Denver as well.

Beathard is a backup wherever he goes. No "trade bait" value for a guy who no team sees as a starter. CJ can have a good life in the NFL in that role. He will make more money in five years than most people will in their lifetime and not suffer the physical trauma that so many players do.

No doubt. CJ will hang on for awhile in that role
Agree^^^, not saying CJ is a star or even a starter at this point, but he's been on a bad team from the start. The o-line was one the worst in the league and then when the line was improved they still didn't really have any weapons around him. He's made mistakes too and turned the ball over but this goes with every QB, I reserve judgment until they are put on a team with at least average talent. I think even if you put Drew Brees on those San Fran teams he does no better than 4-5 wins either.
I would love to see cj be a starter somewhere and have a helluva career, the other would be alright too though
Mullens would be the better trade bait IMO - I could see the guy starting down the road.

The latest on the CJ speculation, directly from the Head Coach's mouth:

Kyle Shanahan plans to keep three QBs, but 49ers always will listen on trades
By Matt Maiocco August 24, 2019 9:01 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kyle Shanahan said he believes the 49ers have three NFL quarterbacks, and they aren’t just going to let some team have one of them for nothing.

Following the 49ers’ 27-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in the third preseason game for both teams, the coach said Saturday night that he plans for starter Jimmy Garoppolo and reserves Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard to be on San Francisco’s 53-man roster when the regular season begins in two weeks.

The message was sent that if another team — like the suddenly Andrew Luck-less Indianapolis Colts — wants Mullens or Beathard, it will have to pay something in return.

Mullens completed 8 of 11 passes for 84 yards Saturday. Beathard did not play, but he figures to see a lot of action in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“We have three very good quarterbacks,” Shanahan said.
“We plan on having three this year. But just like every other person on our roster, if someone thinks there’s a way to upgrade our team, we’ll always listen.

“We’re not ever going to just get rid of NFL players. And I know we have three NFL quarterbacks who can help us.”

The 49ers haven't kept three quarterbacks at the start of the regular season in Shanahan’s two previous years as coach. Garoppolo, Mullens and Beathard all have NFL starting experience.

On the surface, it would appear the 49ers will have a difficult time keeping three quarterbacks to open the season because of injuries to such players as running back Jerick McKinnon, wide receiver Trent Taylor, center Weston Richburg, defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Dee Ford, and cornerback Jason Verrett.

The 49ers might have to carry an extra player at other positions to compensate for the injuries during the early part of the season.

“It’s very rough," Shanahan said. "That’s why it’s tough decisions. But that’s something when you have three NFL quarterbacks, they’re not easy to come by, regardless of where you draft them or anything.

“When you have that, you don’t just give that away. That’s something that takes years to find.”

The Colts could be in the quarterback market because of Luck’s surprise retirement announcement Saturday night.

“I was just told about Luck before I came in here, and it probably shocked me as much as everyone,” Shanahan said. “He’s one of the best guys in our league and one of the most impressive people I’ve been around, just going through the interview process and stuff. I’m sure he has a very good reason and everything, but, yeah, that was crazy to just hear that.”

Watch this video. Sure, it's a year old now. Nevertheless, it's pretty damn sweet, where it shows a lot of history connecting Ferentz to Belichek.

Ultimately, it will be be CJ's lack of NFL accuracy that will keep him on the bench. The throw was late and back towards the middle of the field.

His accuracy has been actually good when he's free to throw his problem is the clock in his head. He holds onto the ball too long and has become a sack victim.

Iowa football: How Hawkeyes rookies fared in Week 3 of the 2019 NFL preseason

Updated 4:27 p.m. CT Aug. 26, 2019

College football officially arrived last Saturday, and the NFL will come soon enough.

But not yet.

Week 3 of the NFL preseason wrapped up Sunday. For those trying to gain a 53-man roster spot or crack a practice squad, each day could make or break one's football future.

Here is the third installment of how Iowa's rookies fared in the NFL preseason. If you missed the first two, those can be found here and here.

Let's roll.

T.J. Hockenson, TE, Detroit Lions
Stats: Hockenson led the Lions in receiving, hauling in three catches for 52 yards in Friday's 24-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Skinny: Another game, another look at why Detroit scooped Hockenson so high. The former Iowa tight end punctuated his nice day with this 32-yard grab off a play-action fake. Expect plenty more connections like that between Hockenson and Matthew Stafford this season. Their final preseason tune-up comes Thursday at Cleveland.

Media coverage: NFL.com analyst Brian Baldinger broke down Hockenson's big third game here.

Noah Fant, TE, Denver Broncos
Stats: Fant didn't play in Saturday's 10-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams

Skinny: Although the foot injury suffered in Week 2 put a scare in all of Denver, Fant and the Broncos have avoided any serious issues. Denver coach Vic Fangio said last week that Fant will be ready to go for the season-opener against Oakland. Fant missed multiple days of practice last week. Expect Denver to play things cautiously the rest of the preseason.

Media coverage: A different angle, but here's a breakdown on Fant's fantasy value. Many peg him as a late-round sleeper.

Anthony Nelson, LB, Tampa Bay Bucs
Stats: Nelson remained sidelined in Friday's 13-12 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Skinny: Nelson's knee injury continues to keep him off the game field, but some good news emerged Monday afternoon. According to Bucs staff writer Carmen Vitali, Nelson returned to practice — at least for the portion open to the media. That's the first time Nelson has practiced in the last three weeks.

Amani Hooker, S, Tennessee Titans
Stats: Hooker had three tackles — two solo — a pass defended and an interception in Sunday's 18-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Skinny: Hooker took full advantage of a miscommunication between Pittsburgh's Mason Rudolph and James Washington. Rudolph thought Washington was going to break out — but he stopped his route instead — and there was Hooker to make the wide-open sliding grab. It's been a nice preseason for the fourth-round pick, who was able to secure this interception after dropping one last week. He'll have a solid role for Tennessee this year. Hooker's final preseason action comes Thursday at Chicago.

Media coverage: A couple videos involving Hooker here. Here he is talking for two solid minutes, and here is 102.5 The Game's Calvin Smith including Hooker's performance in his postgame breakdown.

Nick Easley, WR, Buffalo Bills
Stats: Easley didn't record a catch in Friday's 24-20 win over the Detroit Lions

Skinny: Easley didn't take a snap against Detroit, and it appears his chances of making the 53-man roster are all but through. It'll likely be a battle between David Sills, Ray-Ray McCloud and Easley for a spot on Buffalo's practice squad. The Bills might take two wide receivers, but probably not three. The Bills' last preseason game is Thursday versus Minnesota.

Jake Gervase, S, Los Angeles Rams
Stats: Gervase had one tackle in Saturday's 10-6 win over the Denver Broncos.

Skinny: Gervase played 17 snaps on defense and 12 on special teams Saturday. According to this breakdown, Gervase was one of only three Rams to play double-digit snaps on special teams. This projection doesn't have Gervase making the 53-man roster, but his special teams usage indicates the former Iowa safety could land on the practice squad. Gervase's final preseason action comes Thursday at Houston.

Parker Hesse, TE, Tennessee Titans
Stats: Hesse saw action but did not record a catch in Sunday's 18-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers

Skinny: There isn't a lot of extra room on the Titans' roster for undrafted free agents. But Hesse could be an easy practice-squad candidate. We'll see soon enough. Decisions are coming all around the league this week.

Matt Nelson, OT, Detroit Lions
Stats: Nelson had 24 snaps on offense and two on special teams in Friday's 24-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Skinny: Nelson's usage increased a bit from Week 2, which is a good sign. But it still feels like a long shot that he'll make the 53-man roster. MLive.com Lions beat writer Kyle Meinke has been consistent with Nelson's assessment. That didn't change in Meinke's third roster projection.

Ross Reynolds, OG, San Francisco 49ers
Stats: Reynolds saw action in Saturday's 27-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Skinny: With tons of supporters in attendance — around 80 people or so — Reynolds continued his preseason quest. Sacramento Bee's Chris Biderman still has Reynoldslanding on San Francisco's practice squad. The 49ers' final preseason game comes Thursday against the Chargers.

Keegan Render, C, Philadelphia Eagles
Stats: Render played three snaps on offense and one on special teams in Thursday's 26-15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Skinny: It seems Render's time with the Eagles is coming to an end. He played significantly fewer snaps in Week 3 than in Week 2. Philadelphia's final preseason game is Thursday at the Jets.

Projected 49ers 53-man roster heading into 2019 NFL Preseason finale

By Matt Maiocco
August 26, 2019 9:38 AM

Quarterback
In (2): Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens

Out: C.J. Beathard, Wilton Speight

[Head Coach Kyle] Shanahan insists that the 49ers intend to keep three quarterbacks. With all the injuries elsewhere on the roster, that is a luxury I’m not sure the 49ers will be able to afford. The 49ers are clearly open to trading either Mullens or Beathard. But if there is no market for either, will the club still keep all three QBs on their 53-man roster? Here is an update on 37 Hawkeyes trying to make NFL rosters.

The final cut down for the 53 man rosters are due by this coming Saturday afternoon.

Here’s what’s happening with the former Iowa Hawkeyes currently in the NFL.

QB C.J. Beathard (San Francisco 49ers): Beathard didn’t play in San Francisco’s 27-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. By not playing in the critical third game of the preseason, it appears as if Nick Mullens will win the backup job to Jimmy Garoppolo. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated that the team will keep all three quarterbacks but that may change based on other roster needs.

OL Austin Blythe (Los Angeles Rams): Blythe and the Rams defeated the Denver Broncos10-6 to win their first preseason game. Blythe was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2017 and was signed by the Rams after being waived by the Colts. He is expected to start for the Rams again in 2019.

OL Ike Boettger (Buffalo Bills): Boettger is on his second stint with the Buffalo Bills. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent in May of 2018, Boettger was released and then signed by the Kansas City Chiefs where he was quickly waived and reclaimed by the BiIls. The Bills defeated the Detroit Lions 24-20 last week. Though the Bills have had some injuries upfront, Boettger is not currently expected to make final cuts.

OL Bryan Bulaga (Green Bay Packers): Bulaga is in the last year of a five year, $42 million contract. He didn’t play as the Packers lost to Oakland this week to drop to 1-2 on the preseason.

RB James Butler (Oakland Raiders): Butler carried the ball 15 times for 56 yards against Green Bay. Butler has a tough road in trying to make the roster for the Raiders after spending last year on the practice squad. The Raiders did release RB Doug Martin on Sunday so the door may be slightly open for Butler.

DE Adrian Clayborn (Atlanta Falcons): Clayborn is back with Atlanta after a one year stint in New England that ended with a Super Bowl ring. Clayborn signed a modest one year, $2 million contract. Because they played in the Hall of Fame Game, Atlanta will play five preseason games. So far they’ve played (and lost) four with Clayborn playing sparingly. He is expected to make the roster.

OL Cole Croston (New England Patriots): Croston was re-signed by the Patriots after being let go earlier in the summer. Croston has played in the Patriots last two games, including a 10-3 victory over Carolina. He is not expected to make the final roster.

DT Mike Daniels (Detroit Lions): Daniels joins the Lions after many seasons in Green Bay. He signed a one year, $8.1 million contract and is expected to help anchor the defensive line. Daniels played in his first preseason game against the Bills, recording two tackles, after sitting out with injuries early in camp

C James Daniels (Chicago Bears): The first round pick for the Bears in 2018 started ten games at guard last season and looks to move over to center this year for the Bears. The big news in the 27-17 win over Indianapolis was the announcement of Luck’s retirement.

DT Carl Davis (Cleveland Browns): Davis is on the bubble for a roster spot with the Browns. He had one tackle in a 13-12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past week.

OL Andrew Donnal (Detroit Lions): Donnal is in his second season with the Lions. He signed a one year deal at $845 thousand. Donnal has played in all three preseason game and is expected to make the team as a backup tackle.

WR Nick Easley (Buffalo Bills): Easley has not recorded a catch in any preseason game this year and the undrafted free agent is not expected to make the roster. However, there is some indication that the Bills may take a look at him for their practice squad.

TE Noah Fant (Denver Broncos): Fant was the Bronco’s first round pick. He will of course make the roster and should quickly become a primary target of new Bronco quarterback Joe Flacco. Fant was injured a week ago in a game against the 49ers but is apparently on track to play opening day.

C James Ferentz (New England Patriots): Another Hawkeye trying to stick with the Patriots, Ferentz is on the last year of his two year, $1.4 million contract. Ferentz played two games with the Patriots last season and is going to have to fight to win a roster spot.

S Jake Gervase (Los Angeles Rams): Another member of the Rams that defeated Denver, Gervase had one tackle in the victory. Gervase was signed by the Rams as an undrafted free agent in May and is not projected to make the final 53 man roster.

OL Adam Gettis (Atlanta Falcons): Gettis signed a one year, $800 thousand contract as he fights for a roster spot. He has played in all the preseason games but is not expected to make the final roster.

TE Parker Hesse (Tennessee Titans): Hesse, the undrafted free agent, is trying the tough task of making a position change after college (from defensive end to tight end). He didn’t see any action in an 18-6 loss to Pittsburgh. Hesse is not expected to make the roster.

LB Anthony Hitchens (Kansas City Chiefs): Hitchens comes to Kansas City from the Dallas Cowboys after signing a five year, $45 million contract before last season. He had two tackles in the loss to San Francisco.

TE T.J. Hockenson (Detroit Lions): The number eight pick in this past draft, Hockenson is currently listed as second on the depth chart at tight end but smart money says that he will have the most impact for the Lions. Hockenson had three catches for 52 yards in the loss to Buffalo last week. In the video below starting at the 3:00 mark, there’s a couple catches from T.J. I wanted to put a different clip in here because the announcers really talked up Hockenson but unfortunately the first five minutes of the clip were someone bashing the Arizona Cardinal cheerleaders so I didn’t want to be responsible for you watching that video (google: tj hockenson and danny amendola highlights youtube - Hockenson highlights start at the 9:30 mark).

S Amani Hooker (Tennessee Titans):Hooker was drafted in the fourth round this past April. Hooker had an interception and three tackles in the first half in the loss to Pittsburgh. Hooker is starting to get some recognition from some NFL experts. Pro Football Focus believes Hooker could eventually “dominate at the NFL level” based on his elite grades in slot coverage during his time with Iowa.

S Micah Hyde (
Buffalo Bills): The third Hawkeye on the Bills roster, Hyde came to Buffalo in 2017 and is currently in the third year of a five year $38 million contract. He played briefly against Detroit recording one tackle and is expected to make the final roster.

CB Josh Jackson (Green Bay Packers): Trying to join Bulaga on the Packer roster is Jackson. The team’s second round pick in 2018, Jackson played in all 16 games during his rookie season, including ten starts. Jackson is expected to make the roster. Against the Raiders, Jackson had two tackles and two pass deflections.

LB Josey Jewell (Denver Broncos): Jewell played in all 16 games for Denver last year, starting eight of them. He had 53 tackles on the season and is expected to start for the Broncos this year though he has been battling an oblique injury all camp.

DT Jaleel Johnson (Minnesota Vikings): Johnson was the Vikings fourth round pick in 2017 and is in the third year of his rookie contract. He had just 13 tackles in 16 games last year so his roster spot could be in play. In a 20-9 victory over Arizona, Johnson had one tackle. According to Viking beat writer Andrew Krammer, Johnson is projected as making the roster as the eighth of nine defensive linemen kept.

CB Desmond King (Los Angeles Chargers): King was named first team All-Pro last year but ironically was not invited to the Pro Bowl, go figure. Since being drafted by the Chargers in the fifth round in 2017, King has done nothing but make plays. With 138 tackles and four interceptions over the past two seasons, expect King to continue to thrive, especially with the pressure that the Chargers front four can provide. King had two tackles and a pass deflection in a 23-15 loss to Seattle.

LB Christian Kirksey (Cleveland Browns): Kirksey is in the third year of a four year, $38 million contract. He had three tackles in the loss to Tampa Bay.

TE George Kittle (San Francisco 49ers): Kittle is either the best or second best tight end in the game right now depending on how you feel about Travis Kelce. Kittle didn’t play against Kansas City but is expected to be ready for opening day.

LS Casey Kreiter (Denver Broncos): Kreiter makes his money as a long snapper and is making $1 million to do just that, not a bad gig. His roster spot is safe.

CB Greg Mabin
(FA): Mabin was waived by San Francisco two weeks ago after suffering a calf injury in practice.

OL Matt Nelson (Detroit Lions): The fourth member of the Hawkeyes trying to make the Lions, Nelson signed as a undrafted free agent and is currently a long shot at making the Lions roster. Like Hesse, Nelson is trying a position change from the DL he played in college.

LB Anthony Nelson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): Nelson was the Bucs fourth round pick in the past draft. He’s been slowed with a MCL injury this preseason but is expected to make the roster as an edge rusher.

LB Ben Niemann (Kansas City Chiefs): Niemann is with Kansas City, coming to the team as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He had six tackles in the loss to San Francisco. Niemann played in 14 games with the Chiefs last year and is expected to make the roster once again this year

OL Riley Reiff (Minnesota Vikings): Reiff is in the third year of a $59 million five year deal. The big lineman missed three games with injuries last season but is a lock to start the year on the line for the Vikings. Reiff has been healthy so far this preseason and has started each game.

C Keegan Render (Philadelphia Eagles): Render was signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in May. The Eagles have an experienced offensive line so the chances that Render sticks on the initial 53 man roster are slim. Veteran Stefen Wisniewski is struggling early in the preseason though so if he is cut, Render may become an option. The Eagles lost to the Baltimore Ravens 26-15.

OL Ross Reynolds (San Francisco 49ers): Reynolds was signed as an undrafted free agent by San Francisco and has a tough battle to win a spot. He is not projected to make the opening day roster.

OL Brandon Scherff (Washington Redskins): Scherff has started in all 54 games of his career. Last year he was limited to only eight games due to injuries but is expected to be back in the lineup this season. The Redskins picked up his fifth option year from his initial rookie contract so he will be looking for a big season and a big payday next year. Schreff has played in the last two preseason games as he gets ready for the season.

OL Marshal Yanda (Baltimore Ravens): Yanda has yet to play in the preseason. A future Hall of Famer, Yanda signed a one year, $10 million contract and as long as he is healthy, will be on the roster and anchoring the line for the Ravens.

Sports talk radio in Denver today (104.3 The Fan) was talking about the Broncos potentially trading for Beathard. The rationale was that the Broncos probably want 3 QBs because 2nd round draft pick Drew Lock probably isn’t ready yet if Flacco gets injured and Beathard would be a good fit because he has been running a very similar offense so the transition to the Broncos playbook would be easy for him. The other QBs on the Broncos roster (Hogan from Stanford who lit up the Hawks in the Rose Bowl and Rypien) haven’t been very impressive in the pre-season.

Hogan only lit us up because their asshole running back was unstoppable. Period.
CM had a hell of a game.
I don’t disagree with that at all. Also it was I think the 3rd Rose Bowl for Hogan and the first time in a major bowl game for our guys, which I’m sure didn’t hurt.

half time score:

20 Chargers
14 49'ers

CJ played the entire 1st half.

His stats:

6-9 (67%)
58 yds
1 TD
0 INT
0 # Times Sacked
121.5 QB Rating

He also rushed 2 times; one run was for 7 yds; the other was for -1.

Still think CJ is better than Mullens in games this preseason- the numbers and QB ratings back that up. Something must be off in practice.
