I did a little bit of looking and couldn't find much so figured I would ask here. Next season, Nato and IMar will have the opportunity to become 4-time Big Ten Tournament champions. Who are the others that have accomplished this? In the same class - Ashnault, Retherford, and Snyder will be after #3 next season.

Four-Time Champions:

Stieber, Ruth, Taylor, Russell from recent memory. Before Russell, I believe the last one to do it was Ironside

Edit: beaten to the punch I see :)

Correct. He was one of my All time favorite Hawkeyes. Deanna was a 4X NCAA AA also. Gable stated he was the best wrestler to have never won an NCAA title. He and Mark Churella had some pretty wild matches.

Churella match in Big Ten finals was epic.

It appears Gable produced 5 4x B1G champs in 21 years.

In the 20 years since Gable = 0.

And it will be impossible for that to even be the case once until 25 years (Unless Kemerer beats Nolf).

Since Kemerer lost, next chance will be Lee. I don't see The Bull getting past what's in front of him at 165.

I'm as big a Gable fan as there is. Have been for over 50 years.

But the conference has gotten dramatically tougher than when he was coaching. 25 straight conference championships just ain't gonna happen anymore. In '83, Iowa won 9 of the 10 weight classes. 9!!! And Chiapparelli finished 4th.

Of course Iowa was good. In fact, they were incredible.

But the rest of the conference kinda sucked. No other conference team even finished in the top ten at nationals. Iowa had 4 NCAA champs that year, and 9 All-Americans (Chiapperelli just missed, losing in the round of 12). The entire rest of the conference had a total of 5 All-Americans: Ohio State had 2 (3rd and 6th), Minnesota one (6th), Michigan State one (5th) and Wisconsin one (8th).

That post ^^ really sums up the situation very well. Let's face it, even though Gable was awesome, he didn't have to face an OSU and PSU annually that really had their stuff together. Well now they do! The B10 is BY FAR the deepest, bestest wrestling conference these days, even with Minny and NW down from where they have been in the past 10 years or so.

Agreed. Conference dynamics have changed dramatically.

Every thing has changed. Iowa (Gable) started the wrestling craze. Now it continues.

I would be curious to see the number of D1 Men's Wrestling programs today, compared to when Gable was coaching. To me, that has done a lot to level the playing field.

I think I was at the finals when DeAnna won the Big10 by a score of around 14-12. One reversal after another. At the time it was probably the best match I ever watched. Or maybe I'm old and don't remember things...
